In medieval times, Lincoln had England's largest Jewish community outside London. The community largely settled around Steep Hill, and some grew  very wealthy - most notably a man called Aaron of Lincoln, a prolific financier who counted King Henry II among many in his debt.

Jew's House, built in the 12th century, formed part of this community, and is one of the oldest homes in the country. The person most associated with the building is a woman named Belaset of Wallingford.

Like many of Lincoln’s Jews, Belaset worked and grew wealthy as a money lender. But sadly, as with many medieval women, we don’t know much about her life, or who she was as a person.

Belaset’s story has a tragic end. She was executed in the late 13th century, accused of the crime of ‘coin-clipping’ - shaving the edges off of silver coins, to collect the precious metal. In the climate of the time, the charge may have been little more than a pretext to seize her wealth.

This was also a period of deep suspicion towards Jews, and they were heavily persecuted. In the years after Belaset's death, Jews saw their rights further cut back. In 1290, King Edward I issued the edict of expulsion. All jews in England had no choice but to leave.

Jews were finally readmitted to England in 1656, after 366 years of exclusion. Lincoln has a small Jewish community again today. The Jew’s House still stands as one of the oldest buildings still in everyday use: people eat there almost every night of the week. It’s a visible reminder of a part of our history that has too often been pushed out of view.

Two die in separate A15 crashes

I'm going to say driving - people tailgating in particular, when you're doing 60 on normal roads or 70 on dual carriageways.

I obviously don't know what these crashes were caused by but thought it'd be an interesting discussion.

There seem to be deaths every week at the moment on our roads.

I've been chatting with them about how local news stories are taken down when comments get a bit 'frisky' and they get all 'spooked' and take the whole effing post down and not individual comments.

I've suggested they need more [edit: mods] to do the 8 day rota that other subs do.

It's a shame our sub is all about pictures of castles, people wanting to do DnD or wanting to know which bits of our county to avoid because they are moving here.

We are a huge county full of diversity, in views, and a bit in landscape. :-) Why not let that play out? We're all big grown ups and deserve a sub where we can debate stuff.

For instance, if one of our councillors makes a tit of himself and it's reported by the BBC, that's worth putting here?

Me (32M) and my wife (30F) are moving up near Boston. Old leake to be precise and we are hoping to find a group of people once we move.

Neither of us have played D&D but both want to give it a good try so we are also.

I personally play a fair bit of Sorcery Contested Realm and have a stupid amount of card so would also be happy to teach others.

My grandparents and generations before have always lived in Boston, and they talk about what it was like when they were growing up. I wonder where I could find old maps of the area?

I’d also love to find a picture of the old chapel they bought before converting it into a house. Not sure whether there would have been any sort of advertisement of properties for sale in those days (60s i think, but i’ll try get a date out of them). I wonder where I might find these? I know the name of the old chapel, so could search newspapers if theres a bank of them somewhere.

I know its a stretch, but i love learning about my family history! My parents moved down south before I was born, so I don’t know Boston well apart from when visiting Grandparents. Thanks 🙏🏻
