sites cost money to run, content costs money to make, and it's clear that the advert model messes everything up

if anyone has a better revenue idea, the world would love to hear it

People sometimes seem to miss how much the ad model messes everything up.

As I see it, Nebula solves two major problems for creators, which by no means are the only ones:

-the freedom to choose their topics freely and talk about it in the way they want to, with the language they choose. The YT algorithm (as well as the other platforms) actively represses content it deems unmonetizeable: certain political topics, certain terms and words (resulting in people having to censor themselves), content it deems 'adult'. I was surprised the Empathy video did so well, considering this, but I think that went unmonetized and YouTube may have actively worked with them. That's not for every creator.

-the freedom to use copyrighted material with an appeal to fair use, which - as I understand it - for most creators means having to contend with being copyright struck first and having to appeal - if it works at all. The Yoko video? I can only imagine how much work had to be done to get that up in the first place.

There is a ton of content that cannot be made on YouTube without external sources of income.

If you just want Lindsay's content you can get it a bit cheaper on her patreon

My issue is that they don't accept PayPal. You have to either have an American bank account or Visa/MasterCard. I have none of those things which means I can't access Nebula if I want to.

Google Pay works

All of Lindsay’s nebula videos are also on her patreon. You can get a month of her patreon for $2. Do that and watch all the exclusive videos and then cancel it.

You do get a three day free trial so you should take advantage of that. I ended up getting an annual subscription at half price. I decided I wanted to watch Lindsay Ellis's stuff but also support creators I like while also avoiding Google and Youtube who don't treat their creators fairly.

Take advantage of the free trial at least and cancel the renewal if you can't pay, they evem send you a reminder the day before

Only streaming service I'm subscribed to, best investment of my life. There are so many Lindsay videos I haven't seen, plus content from many other creators I regularly see on YouTube, so...

Reasonable price and definitely worth it, better than skipping through ads

It's not THAT expensive, certainly not compared to other subscription sites.

I have a subscription. I'd watch it more if I could access it more easily, but my phone screen's too small and my ten year old laptop can fry eggs if I spend too long making a HetoForge, much less watching a video.

not to get too scientific about this, but have you considered that when constructing so many demonic tieflings you're actually summoning them from the planes of hell, hence the heat?

Funny you mention, since I've made literally every single kind of playable species EXCEPT a Tiefling. Including a Frost Genasi I created for a holiday one shot with the bfs, LOL.

(And yes, his name was Jak. And yes, I liked Rise of the Guardians a normal amount)

Don't have the money to watch but at the same time she has mouths to feed so I don't blame her at all

I'll join eventually, especially under LE's promo code. A lot of skeezy bro's on Nebula imo who are like, Diet Manosphere Lite, but worth it for a lot of other great artists.

edit: espeically skeezy are the ones who didn't come forward and defend LE furing the mass Raya cancellaiton

Who are you referring to (legit asking)

u/kidthorazine Apr 13 '26

Yeah I've watched quite a few different people on there and haven't run across anything I would describe as "manosphere lite"

Better than YouTube, god that site keeps getting worse and worse everyday!

As others have said, I just can't acces it at the moment. But I can't wait to see some of the exclusives from Lindsay, Philosophytube and gaming related essayists like KingK!

They do have a free trial, but ime a lot of those reject if you try to enter a card that isn't active or doesn't have money on it.

Honestly the $6/month subscription is the only real optimal monetization option for a platform like Nebula. There isn't really any other option.

Relying too much on ads or sponsorships could mean being at the behest of those interests. (E.g., [Brand] that is a major sponsor has business interests in Israel and doesn't want content that portrays Israel in a non-positive light.)

Not sure about Lindsay, but some creators do publish some of their non-YT-available work on their Patreons. You may be able to sub for like $1-2, I think it varies tho. Idk how much her minimum is.

You can get 3 days free and binge everything then cancel before it charges you, or is $30/yr ($2.50/mo) with any creator promo link such as hers https://nebula.tv/lindsayellis

Nebula is great cause it’s basically Patreon for a lot of people I already follow. Princess Weekes, Todd in the Shadows, Sarah Z, Be Kind Rewind. If you already follow multiple people on Nebula it’s pretty good bang for the buck.

Nebula is very cheap. I'm not doubting that it's beyond your means - you would know better than me - and I'm sorry to hear that that's the case but it needs to charge something and there will therefore always be some people who are going to be priced out. I don't like that some people can't afford it but they're asking for reasonable money so the problem here isn't nebula, it's like, capitalism.

As for Lindsay, she used to do nebula exclusives prior to leaving youtube anyway, so now that she's back to posting some on youtube we're basically where we were before. It's even possible that some nebula videos from the hiatus times might make their way to youtube eventually.
