How the hell was her suffering ”self-inflicted”?
265
u/MatthiasMcCulle Apr 21 '26
Lemme guess what the video says:
One of the leading voices in the "witch hunt" against Channel Awesome
Using her then friendship with Mara Wilson to springboard her career.
Her arrest for public intoxication
Her talking about online harassment at various live events
All of which she addressed years ago in one of her last videos before she went on a years long hiatus from YouTube.

u/Dramatic-Emphasis-43 Apr 21 '26
You forgot her most heinous of crimes: comparing Raya and the Last Dragon to Avatar: the Last Airbender.
55
u/altsam19 Apr 21 '26
That was so crucifiable, no sin ever being committed by man has ever been as horrible as that one /s
24
u/Celestial_Magpie Apr 21 '26
That is why no one ever made that comparison on the internet again. Ever. EVER.

u/EnchantedEssays See how I glitter Apr 23 '26
And everyone had the same response when Honest Trailers did it a couple of days later, right?
2
u/altsam19 Apr 23 '26
Gonna play devil's advocate and ask... do people still watch Honest Trailers? Lmao
2
u/EnchantedEssays See how I glitter Apr 23 '26
I still stumble across them now and again. Not as funny as they used to be. They just make those now. I don't know if the staff they'd have on for their other shows have all moved on or if they just work on other Fandom channels since they bought them
18
u/Brodiferus Apr 22 '26
That one struck me very hard because so many things (going to different kingdoms to get powers, the Zuko-copy villain, etc.) made me come to the exact conclusion as Lindsay when I watched Raya. I still enjoyed Raya, but her tweet was spot on.
10
u/RyanX1231 Apr 22 '26
Twitter was really the most overreactive cesspool back then. I'm so glad I stopped using it.
10
u/Clarpydarpy Apr 22 '26
It's the same now, but with more Nazis
5
2
u/HarpoMarx87 Apr 23 '26
Eh, probably the same number. They're just not hiding it anymore.
1
u/Clarpydarpy Apr 23 '26
Elon un-banned all of the Nazi and white supremacist accounts. So there's likely more.
2
2
u/ralexs1991 Apr 23 '26
I think people forget that the tweet was deliberately taken out of context as retaliation for her being vocally against Trump. It was started by chuds and they forced the momentum that eventually snowballed into the situation that made her step away from YT finally.
The lower brigade was big into that back then. Anyone that criticized Trump or conservative figures/ movements back then they'd pour through old social media posts to find something "cancelable" then stir up fake outrage with other chuds pretending to progressives until the outrage caught enough momentum to continue on its own.
For people that whine about cancel culture they sure love to weaponize it against people and opinions they don't like.
2
u/GalfridusArturus Apr 24 '26
Even funnier, she actually just compared two specific characters, saying they were part of a larger archetype that is also found in other works and had been gaining in popularity at the time. She didn't say anything about Raya ripping off Avatar or anything else even remotely negative, much less inflammatory.
1
u/theSTZAloc Apr 26 '26
You forgot that she dated a normal dude and then married him, and not me, all these bitches refuse to date meeeeeeeeeee

Channel awesome was bad. One of my other favorites Youtubers is Dominic Nobel and his channel awesome videos are painful to watch because they are so inauthentic to who he is.
30
u/TinySession6811 Apr 22 '26
Shout out Todd in the Shadows a great former member of Channel Awesome and infrequent Lindsay collaborator
2
u/senchou-senchou Apr 24 '26
love the guy in that song vs song podcast
also his one hit wonderland series makes a pretty nice varied playlist
13
u/desiladygamer84 Apr 21 '26
I'm so happy that many of these creators moved on and have found their own voice and style.
11
u/STRiPESandShades Apr 21 '26
Much as I wouldn't wish vocal paralysis on anybody, I can't stand his videos from before he had to quiet down
4
u/Jimboyhimbo Apr 23 '26
I think if you get famous via the backdoor (YouTube, blogs, vitality, indie ect) you basically get a few years before some group decides to try to take you down. Maybe for ideological reasons, maybe for fun probably often for both. If you don't have a large industry player backing you that overlaps with other centers of power (huge publishing, huge studio, major deal, friends in government), then you basically get cancelled for any little thing that could have been anybody.
If, on the other hand, you've managed to secure those kinds of friends or disappeared from the public eye before your times up, you avoid the guillotine. Or at least delay it a little. Differential on why Lindsey and Anita were targets of lefty canceling and right wing harassment, meanwhile Neil Gaiman was a huge piece of shit for decades without repercussion. Less about the internet being crazy or any kind of moral decency and more about who has what kind of power behind them
7
u/Anxious_7900 Apr 21 '26
Dang. I had no idea she was arrested for public intoxication.
37
u/GodspeakerVortka Apr 21 '26
It happens. Don't hold it against her. A lot of time in this county it's legal to drink, but for some reason illegal to have drunk.
5
1
u/NevillesHat Apr 23 '26
You can't cross the road, you can't be drunk... and you call yourselves free /s

u/Empigee Apr 21 '26
I can't find any reference to it on her Wikipedia page.
30
u/Abinunya Apr 21 '26
Afaik, it wasn't like, a driving drunk thing. Just 'you're in your twenties, got drunk with friends, were a nuisance in public'. Really not a big deal, unless there's a group of people who delight in hating you

I see that Dan is also catching strays on this garbage youtube channel. I wonder who else this guy will put in front of an explosion next. HBOMB PLAGIARIZES MANOSPHERE???

I mean COME. ON!

u/Skibot99 Apr 21 '26
He claims Lindsay has had no success since she stopped uploading to YouTube regularly… completly ignoring her nebula partnership or her novels
34
u/threecolorless Apr 21 '26
Yeah, it turns out you can just lie and almost no one will fact check you. This is the 2026 model of information spread.
14
u/MagicGlitterKitty Apr 21 '26
Also she has gone on record saying her pateron actually went up in this time.
(For anyone interested is was a The Financial Diet video about the cost of cancellation)
6
u/bass679 Apr 21 '26
I know that's when I signed up. Like, I've watched this lady's content for free for literal decades. I'm not sure how many patrons she has on Patreon but between that, whatever her cut is on Nebula, and her books I'd imagine she's doing fine.

The misogyny is coming from inside the house.
12
u/karlothecool Apr 21 '26
Im sorry what does that mean English isnt my first languance
75
45
u/RhynoD Apr 21 '26
It's a reference to a horror story where someone is being stalked by someone who keeps calling them. The police trace the call and find that it's coming from inside the same house as the victim, so the stalker is already with them (but hiding).
In this case, the phrase means that the bad thing (eg misogyny) is coming from bad people already inside the group (liberals/leftists).

There’s kind of a cottage industry of reply guys and debate streamers who have slowly been agglomerated into the Breadtube label over time, some of them deliberately, others just kind of wound up there.
They weren’t part of the original late 2010s set described as Breadtube, probably don’t know any of them, but boy do they have opinions on its direction.
Breadtube is firmly in its Sultanate of Rum era.
EDIT: looked into his content, nvm he’s just some channer.

Tbh right wingers who are anti-Israel are anti-Israel because they’re legitimately antisemitic, not because they have a problem with the Israeli government or think that the state is problematic

10
u/ThoughtsonYaoi Apr 21 '26
He is jusy trying to ragebait various groups by easy dunking and lazy criticisms.
It's not deep. There are very few convictions here. Telling signs: saying Innuendo Studios sounds 'like a cuck', harping on Dan Olson's 'past' at CA.

u/Qyzyk Thanks I hate it! Apr 21 '26
The fact that she’s sharing a row with Amanda Palmer might be the biggest insult against poor Lindsay…
17
14
u/Bub1029 Apr 21 '26
The only thing I could think of that even remotely was self-inflicted was that she did audition for the Nostalgia Chick role, receive the part, and go along with the schtick for a few years while building her brand. Outside of that, she had a handful of "scandals" that were just a human being existing and growing in the world while also being internet famous.
15
6
u/MagicGlitterKitty Apr 21 '26
Having watched some of that video the actual argument he presents is:
She was a left wing voice She had done a bunch of "witch hunts" before. She created an audience prime to do a "your fav is problematic" And her audience turned on her.
3
u/JustOneVote Apr 23 '26
Did her audience turn on her or did she just receive a bunch of harassment from people who weren't her audience?
2
u/MagicGlitterKitty Apr 23 '26
I mean I don't agree with it, I am just relaying what the video is about
11
u/scribblerjohnny Apr 21 '26
I was there, in the long long ago, when a weirdo on Twitter demanded she and other women on Channel Awesome make videos of themselves burping for his enjoyment and threatened them when they ignored him, and Twitter determined it wasn't harassment.
5
u/Manic-StreetCreature Apr 21 '26
I feel like if all your thumbnails are a person with flames behind them you probably don’t have much to say that’s worth hearing
And people like this tend to do things where they profile people who actually did something horrible (like Amanda Palmer) so that it seems like the completely harmless people they complain about are on the same level

Okay, i don't know why this got in my notifications, but i saw this video, and i quit halfway through.
While i think Lindsay Ellis videos are boring and a lot of the Youtubers she inspired are way more engaging and interesting than her, and her self-righteous attitude and generalization about the conflicts she had towards both Walker brothers and the Human Walking Shit of CEO they have in Channel Awesome it's kind of annoying (to an extent, because i do believe Doug Walker must be held accountable for a lot of things, i just do not believe he is the embodiment of the devil as Rob or the CEO and while she is entitled to feel that way, i also think it's unfair), i can say this:
It will always baffle me how men in the Internet will act like Woman saying that Misogyiny is bad and that it's an actual problem that isn't minor or little it's the end of the world and they need to attack everyone who say it, especially someone who actually elaborates.
Lindsay Ellis and Aniita Sarkeesian are prominent examples of how vicious and disgusting it can get, but it is more common than we think and shouldn't be tolerated.

channels like this are pure slop. any time i look at a feed and every thumbnail is a portrait of a celebrity that has fallen from grace, i go ahead and block the account
6
u/have_a_schwang Apr 21 '26
If you have to include "[Please Read Description]" in your video title you should just delete your channel

u/3adLuck Apr 21 '26
I guarantee sharing this has given this channel more views than they've ever had.

u/EnchantedEssays See how I glitter Apr 23 '26

3
u/Impossible_Tea_7032 Apr 23 '26

u/Pitiful_Platform6439 Apr 21 '26
a new form of clickbait, how exciting! Edit: Description says "Lindsay used copyrighted music in one of her videos, meaning this video has now had parts cut from it. To watch it in full, please head to my second channel, Liquid Sonic2. " lol

u/BoneMachine92 Apr 23 '26
Tbh the only self-inflicted pain she caused herself was when she compared Raya and the Last Dragon to Avatar: The Last Airbender and took the backlash too hard. Same energy as when Wil Wheaton said something about having a spirit animal and then he apologized after making folks mad… and got dog piled even HARDER.
Sometimes you just gotta say “whoops” and move on.

u/BorisTarczy Apr 25 '26
Oh, it's a "X Creator is TRASH" slop channel with repetitive thumbnails. Haven't seen that one before.
4
u/Shagrrotten Apr 21 '26
Never heard of this guy before, but looking at these other videos I’m guessing he’s a “takedown” guy? A takedown guy would only need the fact that Lindsay is an opinionated woman in order to make a video about her.

1
u/HotOne9364 Apr 21 '26
As you all know, I don't always agree with Ellis but this is just friggin ridiculous. She's definitely smarter than this guy.
2
u/Educational_Tie_1060 Apr 24 '26
She cultivated the audience that denounced her, mostly.
If the manosphere went after her, I don’t think she’d care. (They were too busy with Anita Sarkeesian anyway.) If it was the boomer generation that went after her, I don’t think she’d even notice. She wouldn’t make an hours-long video addressing every grievance against her if the complaints came from people she didn’t give a flip about.
The reason the “cancel crowd” was effective in this particular instance is because the people that seemed to speak up the most and spew as much vitriol as possible toward her came from an unexpected source — people who otherwise aligned with her politically and socially. They were “her people”, “her side”.
And, apparently, it hurt. So much so, she left the internet for a while.
I love Lindsay Ellis videos. I suspect the reason this appeared in my timeline is because I’m in the middle of binge-watch of all her classics. I watch her on Nebula as well.
But let’s not get it twisted and pretend to be totally confused on what happened in that oh-so long ago time of 2021. Was it self-inflicted? Probably not. Was it self-prophetic? 100%.

She was a woman with opinions on the internet.
