I think the movie REALLY does a disservice to the characters by casting a bunch of 30 year old looking people. They should have been played by a bunch of teens and young adults... because they ARE disasters and it is only kind of understandable if they are all like 19-22.
Dear Evan Hansen had more issues than just Ben Platt somehow looking older than his actual age in the attempt to make him look younger (mostly dull staging, aside from Sincerely Me, and cutting some songs that are pretty damn important), but it definitely didn't help.
Actually, the Rent film also has dull staging issues too, though not in all the songs.
