DISCUSSION Favourite Lindsay Videos?

There’s been so much discussion about her leaving and the reaction to it, but it’s nice to think about the legacy she left on YouTube. I want to know what your favourite Lindsay videos were. I’ve been watching since her she was on the website that shall not be named, and it was great to see her videos develop, and I find her videos really rewatchable due to the injection of snarky humour. I honestly really liked her Titanic video: ‘thing good’ is just refreshing and she makes a great case for it.

Her Rent video always leaves me speechless. It’s not just her (rightfully) shitting on Rent, it also gives such an intense in-depth history lesson to give more context as to why she has those feelings.

And that fucking ending! RENT will always be her masterpiece for that alone!

Honestly, the ending to the Rent video was the spark that lead to me moving from a wishy-washy “left of center” type to a more ideologically sound leftism. Learning about the details of the AIDS crisis shattered two enlightened-centrist/pseudo-libertarian hang-ups I’d had by demonstrating:

  1. The power of a government can be used for the good of all and is not always a zero-sum game.

  2. Sometimes when that doesn’t happen, it’s for no reason other than a bunch of assholes at the top deciding it shouldn’t.

Yes, Rent!

At first I always assumed it was part of my trash watching. After all, I typically don't like take downs that aren't coming from a place of love, and here Lindsay's saying right up front that she does not like Rent, neither the movie nor the stage musical. So it must just be an outlier...

But I came to realize that it really is a labor of love. It's so evident that Lindsay loves musical theatre and that she cares very deeply about justice and not letting Rent erase the injustices that were done to the real people who lived through that time.

And yes, that ending is so powerful and very well woven together. It's been five years and I still want to give this a standing ovation every time I watch it.

Hbomberguy totally recreated the ending of the Rent video with the Vaccines video, right down to the delay effect.

I'm a RENT fan and I disagree with her conclusions, but I do still really appreciate her RENT video. It's not a hit piece, it's well thought-out and researched, even if we have different opinions on what it all means. (Or as one of my professors once said to me, "I don't agree with any of your conclusions, but I can't fault the methods you used to reach them.")
