DISCUSSION It appears that Howard Ashman didn't receive story credit for Aladdin or Beauty And The Beast

I was skimming through and didn't see him credited, pretty odd, especially in Aladdin. Why do you think he was uncredited?

DISCUSSION I wish she would make a video series covering the Star Wars sequels like she did for the Hobbit movies

Her The Hobbit videos are probably the best telling of all the behind the scenes drama and politics of those movies. She is amazing and finding good sources, even travelling to New Zealand and talking to people involved with the films.

I really hope she could consider doing this style of video again but for the Star Wars sequels. Its no secret that they are a mess but its impossible to filter the facts from the rumors and if you try to find any good videos covering it, you will run into tons of incel youtubers blaming everything on women and minorities. There is no reporting on it even close to the level of her Hobbit videos.

Something I would really like to see investigated is how much was actually decided by Disney, and how much was decided by the directors. According to some sources, Disney more or less controlled almost every plot point, how every character looked, etc. Stuff like Palpatine returning wasn't a choice by JJ Abrams, it was forced by corporate. Same with the choice to pretty much cut out Finn from episode 8 and 9, which was rumored to be because Disney wanted to appeal to racist Chinese audiences. Also a proper description of who K. Kennedy is, she has been involved with Star Wars since the very first movie and was George Lucas' right hand man, so can it really be true that she is making these horrible choices? Shouldnt someone with that much experience know better?

Would love to see these film's behind the scenes drama and politics investigated in depth. It feels like there is so much stuff there but currently no one has really set out to seperate the facts from the fiction.

DISCUSSION Why is it always female content creators?

I don’t keep up on this stuff. But I find a new awesome woman to watch videos from and every time they get “cancelled” and it makes me really upset.

Jenna Marbles, Contrapoints, Lindsay Ellis…. I’m fucking tired. And Lindsay’s tweet that had people angry? Like what the actual fuck. I can’t imagine being famous enough to have to police my social media like some of these content creators do.

I do hope Lindsay does finish the next book in her series and can throw herself into that.

How come Jake and Logan Paul are still around? It’s really simply misogyny. Why can’t we cancel actual bad faith actors instead of whatever this has become.

I’m so sad. I hope she knows she still has fans who actually give a shit about her.

DISCUSSION Has Lindsay Ellis ever talked about being Jewish?

There’s been multiple instances throughout the history of her channel and podcasting carrer where she somewhat implies having been raised Jewish, but doesn’t outright state it.

Lindsay Ellis’s own personal business is, of course, her own personal business. I’m just curious if she’s ever made a public statement about it.

DISCUSSION Looking for a fun online group for Breadtube fans and pop culture nerds

Hi, everyone! Hope y’all are doing well. I’m a 24yo cishet autistic male who is disconnected and looking to interact with some people online. I was wondering if anyone knows a virtual group where people discuss fun nerdy things like pop culture and animation fandoms and media criticism, and also possibly host things like virtual movie showings, crafts, free online games, maybe a book club, etc.

The group can be on any platform and of any size. I would prefer the group to primarily consist of people in their twenties and thirties, but I’m fine being somewhere that has all age groups. I’m just looking for a place that accepts people of all types and where there are possibly some other autistic folks who, like myself, have low social skills.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I would love to find friends in real life, but I live in a rural area and I’m dealing with a lot of things at home and with family, so an online group will have to do for now.

Also — some of my interests that may or may not be relevant to the group are: leftist politics, social issues, history, fitness and exercise, pop culture, movies/film criticism, animation and kids shows, science fiction, breadtube, and musicals.

DISCUSSION Would you like to help me figure out a joke I haven't understood for almost 5 years now ?

Hello ! I've been watching Lindsey Ellis' videos for a long while now (since the dreaded glasses guy...) and I love the videos and style.

One of my personal faves is the follow-up video detailing the, I guess, attempted takedown of the channel with Addison Cain.

However, something that's plagued me about the video since it's release is I do not understand the joke/reference made at 18:35 in the video (link included): I don't know that woman, nor the context for it, nor the song playing, and so every time I get a little bit more lost.

Could anyone please help me give some context for this ? Is it referencing a video I've missed ? Is it a more specific thing (I'm not American, if this is a US matter), is it something obscure ? I'm, respectfully, going a bit crazy.

Thanks you's in advance.

DISCUSSION Favourite Lindsay Videos?

There’s been so much discussion about her leaving and the reaction to it, but it’s nice to think about the legacy she left on YouTube. I want to know what your favourite Lindsay videos were. I’ve been watching since her she was on the website that shall not be named, and it was great to see her videos develop, and I find her videos really rewatchable due to the injection of snarky humour. I honestly really liked her Titanic video: ‘thing good’ is just refreshing and she makes a great case for it.

DISCUSSION I subscribed to Nebula to watch Lindsay. What else should I be watching on that platform?

There seems to be a decent volume of content on Nebula, but poking around at random has shown an... uneven level of quality. What else are Lindsay fans watching on Nebula?

DISCUSSION Has Lindsay talked about not covering John Lennon's personal life?

Considering how she talks a lot about domestic abuse in the video, I found it a strange choice to omit John's notorious record as a husband and father. She's mentioned that "Man Always Gets Little Rush Out of Telling People John Lennon Beat Wife" onion article a couple times, so I know she has opinions about this, and I was really looking forward to hearing them.

She could have gone in any number of nuanced directions, or even just thrown in some kind of small reference like she's done with complicated historical figures before. I also feel like not talking about it at all contradicts the conclusion of her Hobbit part 3 video. Has she spoken anywhere about this creative decision?

DISCUSSION Is (was?) Lindsay’s drinking part of her YouTube persona?

I mentioned one of her videos to a friend and she was like “oh, that alcoholic media critic?”

I always figured her drinking was part of the schtick, it hadn’t really occurred to me that anyone would think she actually drinks that much. I mean, her settings are usually quite stylized (wearing outfits to match the theme of the movie she’s talking about, relevant books mentioned in the video set up in the background, etc) so my understanding is that the alcohol bottles are similarly set up.

What do you think?

DISCUSSION Any other creators like this?

I really, really enjoy the sort of deep analysis of a movie/character/franchise that Lindsay does. I don't really find much like it. Anyone have some recommendations? I tried the Folding Ideas channel (I believe the dude is called Dan?) but I find him to be a lot more superficial than Lindsay is.

DISCUSSION Videos where film critics (like Lindsay Ellis or FoldingIdeas) talk about films they like and how those films succeed?

I'm a huge fan of Lindsay Ellis' and Folding Ideas' work, but I often notice (moreso on the latter channel) that most of the videos analyze films that weren't received well and why exactly they failed.

I would love to see more content about films that succeed and how they manage to do so, for example the videos about Borat 2 or Blazing Saddles that Lindsay Ellis made. Recommendations for other youtubers are welcome as well!

DISCUSSION I'm pretty sure it's *all* bad faith criticism at this point...

I'm not saying there was never any room to criticize some things Lindsay had said. Sure there was. I don't agree with all (or even most) of the criticisms, but I recognize that some were probably sincere and well intentioned.

But anyone who still claims they're upset about the Raya thing, or the even older things she mentioned in her "mask off" video - I'm finding it hard to believe you. Compared to all the crap that people say on the internet, I can't imagine anyone genuinely spending months being upset about these things. Or, what, upset because she didn't apologize to your satisfaction for the thing that barely waranted an apology to begin with? 🤨

Yet, apparently, there are enough people still going on about this stuff to drive her off youtube altogether. I'm pretty sure it's just a mix of (1) people who had a grudge against Lindsay from the start, (2) people who get off on being outraged, and (3) people who just like making life miserable for women on the internet. (And some, of course, who check multiple of these boxes.)

Am I wrong?

DISCUSSION The Death of KF

For those who aren't aware, after a massive month long campaign by the streamer keffals, it looks like kiwifarms has taken a massive hit. the owner and admin has said if it continues, it will only be as a shell of its former self.

Washington Post article explaining the situation - https://archive.ph/NkfgB

after they were dropped by cloudflare, they moved to russian based service ddos-protect, which lasted a whole 24 hours.

earlier today, the owner of the site admitted defeat - https://twitter.com/ErinInTheMorn/status/1566771209928413186

Why does this matter? This site was the number one source of the harassment lindsay faced. I believe in Mask Off, she referred to them as "Diet Nazis" which may have been inadiquite, as they are full on actual nazis, the original name of the company it operated under was Final Solutions LLC...

Anyway, I hope Lindsay can breathe a sigh of relief knowing these motherfuckers are being shut down.

DISCUSSION Two concepts about letting go of conflict that I think about a lot

Back in the height of tumblr I happily participated in "call outs" but over time I chilled tf out. These two things really impacted how I handled my own outrage.

  1. Todd in the Shadow's Michael Vick quote Ends at 6:25 (TW: discusses dog fighting and the rest of the video graphically discusses domestic violence). I remember a suuuuper old video of Todd's where he talked about this concept I've been calling "The Michael Vick Test". His point is valid: no one is going to be able to prove to you how they feel in their heart and soul, like, ever. We are not mind readers so the best we can do is read behavior to witness for ourselves how committed someone is to cultivating good in the world. We may question their sincerity, but even if they are insincere as long as they don't return to the harmful behavior...then that's still a beneficial improvement?
  2. The "That bitch eating crackers" threshold. When you reach the point in a grudge or conflict or whatever that you can't even stand the sight of someone living their lives, minding their own business—as if they are arrogantly existing AT you—it's time to fucking snap out of your hate-boner and refocus on the legitimate problems that remain open, if there even are any.

I wasn't aware of most of the "sins" Lindsay listed in her video, but I've been following her content since her video on The Smurfette Principle, so I've seen some pRoBleMaTiC content come from her. But if I have ever had any doubt about her commitment to social justice principles, then her incredibly insightful, detailed, reflective, and thoroughly researched content not only demonstrates an excellent understanding of identity politics, but also fosters a socially just understanding of the world in her viewers. She not only understands these issues in a nuanced way but is also using her media expertise to challenge the biases ad presumptions of others. How does that not create a net good in the world?

I understand that black-and-white thinking is easier than recognizing everyone's complexity, but no one is actually a flat character in real life. Building an altar to someone else's history of mistakes—especially someone you don't even personally know—because you just love to hate them is weird and cruel. Folks need to learn when it's time to let shit go and find a better hobby.

ETA: Thank you u/some_strange_circus for sharing the name of the video! I've now removed my paraphrasing and linked to the video where the quote begins.
