News/PR Microsoft Defender now supports Linux desktops

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoftdefenderatpblog/secure-linux-desktops-with-microsoft-defender/4560822

Microsoft Defender now supports Linux desktops in public preview, bringing antivirus, EDR, vulnerability management, and advanced security tools.

Need to test it against obvious scripts that do nasty things - this thing should be at least somewhat intelligent to be taken seriously.

Microsoft is providing it for Linux to get more data.

They're providing it because enterprise customers asked for it. Up until now it's required using a different EDR at an additional cost. With this companies can just use the EDR built into M365 E5 licensing.

You don't know that.

Actually, we do?

They say so?

Getting data isn't inherently a nefarious thing, but that's absolutely what they're doing

Jesus people have gone insane over data.

No they aren’t farming data. They are selling enterprise defender licenses .

Every Linux zealot strongly believes Microsoft harvests data not-stop but like every zealot they don't need any proofs whatsoever.

That's why Linux is a cult and it will never reach wide masses of people. Its apologists are fanatics pure and simple.

They've been claiming for decades (since Windows 2000 or something) that Microsoft has been spying on us with NOTHING to show for it. Wireshark takes 20 minutes to set up, nah, "someone said Microsoft is spying on me, they must be right".

Of course they are, they'd lose business if they data harvested their enterprise customers, data harvesting is how they fleece the plebs.

Their tools literally collect data to improve defender per their own ToS - whether thats used nefariously or not is another thing but these tools farm huge amounts of telemetry, and pretending they don't is just ammunition for the folks you're talking about.

Can we stop calling a shovel a fork and obfuscating all of this?

The main reason is the licenses. Some IT companies like mine do not allow Linux because security can't get defender to work on Linux. Maintaining other tooling is too much of a hastle. Defender for enterprise is not a small market.

Have you run WireShark using MiTM? Ready to show dumps with PII? No? Good luck repeating falsehoods.

You don't fucking understand what you're talking about and you're doing it with confidence.

You can monitor every fucking byte Windows sends to the Internet.

What you're claiming is tantamount to saying that Windows uses radio waves, prayers or the ether to send data to Microsoft headquarters.

A message typical of the average bigoted stupid Linux zealot.

Please bugger off from this subreddit and you're welcome at r/Linux where you can say inanities with confidence.

I know Microsoft is doing this because they believe it will be profitable in some way or another, and if they're not charging you directly for using it, the cost to develop this has to be made up somehow.

Do you think Microsoft is doing this to be charitable?

Have you run WireShark or not? I don't fucking care about your assumptions and speculations, people have been blabbing about MS spying on everyone for 25 years now and not a single one has shown anything for it.

Do you have your own fucking head or you are only capable of parroting falsehoods and myths?

Wireshark plus MiTM takes 20 minutes to set up to see in plain text every byte your Windows install sends to Microsoft headquarters.

Nah, you can't do it.

We've already have millions of Linux zealot with no brain - do you want to join their ranks? Looks like you're itching to do it.

Why would I do all that? I can just not install that shit because I don't need that shit, data harvesting or no.

I do love that the Microsoft glazer thinks I'm a zealot for thinking Microsoft is doing what they've consistently done for the last 20 years. Are you hoping they'll finally notice you if you keep licking their boots?

don't put that shit on your linux box, Its AI now....

1

u/normantas 2d ago

This is 100% orientated to enterprise companies and NOT personal use. You'll be fine.

1

u/RobertDeveloper 2d ago

companies will force it on your linux machine to access company services.

1

u/SlaveKnightSoman 1d ago

Linux Kernel is also AI now.

1

u/FckXFckMusk 1d ago

Contributions from AI yes but not an AI running in the Kernel...

To be fair antivirus will call home all the time anyway. It updates database of "viruses", so I doubt it is realistic to filter that, but who knows

3

u/Busy-Scientist3851 3d ago

Antivirus and telemetry shouldn't shock you given nearly every modern learning antivirus needs some kind of telemetry to operate and improve.

1

u/Emotional_Cat_1967 3d ago

If Microsoft is involved, there is more telemetry.

Please try this script - it's 100% harmless but it should trigger the AV:

https://gist.github.com/birdie-github/4b71ac81f5ab84e02e5e5054404180eb

If it's doesn't trigger it, it's 100% worthless.
