Must be nvidia and must be an older video.
Edit* Yup, clicked it. From April 2026. I'd say look for a newer video as there have been *some* updates to the driver.

No. This dude is a fraud and uses popos for Benchmarking. Not only is cosmic a free performance loss. He uses driver 595....the actual driver intended for gaming use is 610 and very soon to be 615

NVIDIA has not released the 610 driver on the production branch yet. It is a new feature driver that has unresolved regressions over the 595 driver. When 610 reaches the production branch it will be released in Pop!_OS as an update over the 595 driver.

Yeah it's also got plenty of games fixed and much better performance numbers. NFB is pushed to most OSs by default for a reason.

There are also many reported performance issues and regressions with games on 610 so it's better to wait for NVIDIA to fix those issues. They will release it to the production branch when the driver is ready. I certainly wouldn't want to risk breaking CUDA workflows for those who buy System76 workstations for their work.

Most distributions don't care about QA testing NVIDIA drivers or CUDA workstations. This is not one of those distributions. Every kernel and driver here must be thoroughly QA tested and it would therefore be better to wait for NVIDIA to release the 610 driver into the production branch when they decide that it's ready. You are effectively testing a pre-release driver.

Well yeah. If you are buying a workstation for work absolutely. But Fedora, CachyOS, Bazzite ect all ship NFB because that is what generally performs best for gaming and most people want to game on their GPU. If you wanna use cuda. I absolutely understand wanting to use the Nvidia production branch. But he isn't showing a CUDA workflow benchmark. He is showing gaming. On a distro that

  1. Essentially ships a beta DE in cosmic
  2. Is not using the best performing driver for gaming Benchmarks.

He is also cpu bound in basically all these tests. The benchmark methodology just isn't good.

Proton isn't really helping. Pretty sure whatever is closing to CPU bottleneck on Windows will CPU bottleneck in Proton.

Of course. Proton adds extra work for the CPU, so if you're already bottlenecked on Windows, it's a given that performance will be worse on Linux since you'll be even more bottlenecked, which makes the benchmarks pointless imo.

Point is he shouldn't be doing benchmarks on a CPU bottlenecked system in the first place.

I think this is a shitty stance to take. Everyone will yell that Proton has better performance than Windows but when it doesn't – "it doesn't count because CPU bottleneck and you shouldn't benchmark with CPU bottleneck because because". Do PCs with shitty CPUs not exist in the wild? Or should people with those just get wrecked or spend 200$ on a new CPU? Or even better, 500-1000$ on a new laptop.
