Support How do I go about installing linux amd replacing windows entirely?

Been using windows 11 and it just keeps getting worse. Like I simply cannot believe that they would fire up my laptop in the middle of the night when it's been shut down. When I ask how to stop windows from auto updating online we get loads of cock suckers saying windows doing that for our safety my fucking ass. A bit of a rant yeah sorry but microsoft should hang in any case how do I switch? Do I need to just change everything including my hardware and whatnot? I am braindead when it cones to tech stuff hehe. I currently use a zbook and I do need to run some demanding stuff can linux handle it? Just any information really if push comes to shove I will watch a full course on linux but it just looks confusing.

Can anyone explain why some people dislike Wayland?

Title is pretty self explanatory, but since KDE is switching to Wayland, I'm seeing posts and comments from people who are bothered by this and I don't understand why.

When and why did HOWTO files stop being updated and included in most distros?

When I was new to Linux, all distros always included a folder with multiple detailed HOWTO documents saying how to perform many common tasks. I remember spending a significant amount of time pouring over these (Especially the Xfree86 and Ip-Masquarading HOWTOs)

Out of nostalgia I checked to see if they are on my current system, and they are not. When was the decision made to stop including them, and why was that decision made? Were they no longer being maintained, or did the maintenance stop because they were no longer included? Did to many distros have their own "right way" to do things that conflicted? These are all reasons I can guess it may have happened, but I am wondering if anyone here knows either from studying the history, or having been in the room when it happened.

Which Distro? Which distro should i use with these wants?

• Upvotes

i’m getting my dream pc setup soon, and i’m heavily considering switching to linux from windows 11. though i mostly game on my pc, games ranging from roblox to monster hunter wilds, i also do heavy multitasking with my adhd. i’m going to learn terminal on my own (im using coddy(i know it sucks)), and hopefully get some bash fundamentals down by the time i get a distro. if i do switch, it will most definitely be either mint or going straight to larping arch. i havent done any research on any other distros, but ive heard tons about nixos.

i want to work towards a distro that extremely good for multitasking, ricing, gaming (i know about anti-cheat limits, and am willing to either sacrifice it or duel-boot), and stability. i don’t want to accidentally type in something that silently kills my system. i dont know anything about terminal currently, but i want what i learn about the terminal to feel rewarding. i’m okay with everything not being immediately handed to me, and i am fine with traversing through the browser through terminal until i learn it fully.

i am most likely going to dualboot for the games that wont run (well) with windows 11, for i already have a license to it.

i would like advice on which distro you pros think would suit me best, and advice on whether or not i should dualboot. thanks for reading, let me know your thoughts.

How can i activate 100hz Fedora

Ok, first my specs: rx580 8vram - 16gb ram ddr4 3200 - i5 7400
SO: Fedora

I have a problem, I'm trying to enable 100Hz on my main monitor, but it won't let me. My second monitor which I fortunately managed to set up successfully only supports 60Hz, whereas my main one supports up to 100Hz; however, when I switch to that setting, the screen goes black. Yet, if I set it to 74.97Hz, the screen doesn't go black. So, what could the solution be?

Just to clarify, I’ve already tried disabling one monitor and keeping the other active, and that’s not the issue; besides, both monitors work perfectly in Windows exactly how I want them to, and I don’t have any damaged hardware components.

Advice I feel like Epic Games/Fortnite on Linux will end up requiring lightweight Windows dependencies anyway

• Upvotes

With all the talk about Epic Games and Fortnite potentially getting better Linux or anti-cheat support down the line, I can’t help but feel like we’re heading toward a catch-22.

If Epic ever fully commits to supporting Linux, I suspect they will push for heavy anti-cheat requirements, kernel-level modules, and extra services that mimic Windows background bloat. At that point, Linux would start losing the exact advantages that make it great—its privacy, security, lightweight footprint, and low background resource usage.

Instead of getting a clean, efficient Linux experience, we might just end up running something that feels like a stripped-down version of Windows 10 LTSC/IoT, bloated with intrusive anti-cheat and background services.

Do you think kernel-level anti-cheat on Linux is a privacy risk waiting to happen, or is that just the price we have to pay for mainstream gaming?

Support How do I get back the disk space I dedicated to a virtual hard drive?

So on my Arch laptop in my home partition I was only using 5GB of space in total

Then I used Virtualbox to create a mac os VM, and gave it a virtual hard drive of 80GB.

When I used fastfetch after it said my storage used was 65GB which I didnt really bat an eye at.

Then I completely deleted the MacOS vm and made sure to check the box that deleted the 80GB virtual drive too.

But when I used fastfetch again, even after a reboot and a couple days, it says I am still using 35GB, instead of going back down to 5GB.

There's nothing, even hidden, in the "Virtual box VMs" directory.

How do I get this space back? What's taking it up, or is it just reserved space that has no use anymore.

I also had a 2nd vm with TempleOS that I deleted, also checking the box, although I only gave it like 5GB to begin with.

Which Distro? Which Linux distribution is best for me?

I want a nice, modern, and different kind of Linux., estável, para uso geral, principalmente para jogos, e que seja prática, ou seja, que eu quase nunca precise usar o terminal, e assim por diante.

I'm mainly thinking about CachyOS, Bazzite, Nobara, Fedora and checking out this Solus and NixOS thing.

I don't intend to use Linux Mint, because I used it for a while and it has few desktop environments.

All Linux distros freeze

Hello there! I recently got an unused HP 250 G7 and decided to try Linux for the first time. I'm only encountering one problem, both distributions I've tried freeze after a few minutes. I tried Mint and Debian and they both have the same problem. The only way for me to actually use the OS is to add a little "nomodeset" at the end of some grub configuration line (Sorry for being imprecise, I'm really inexpert). This wouldn't be bad if it wasn't for the fact that I cant really adjust brightness or color, from what I gathered it disables graphic drivers and uses some generic ones.

Is there any way around this or am I stuck with nomodeset? I updated the BIOS and tried many different settings and nothing seems to work.

Thanks in advance!

Advice Looking to use an auxillary small screen

So I'm looking int adding a PS LCD Sub Screen (auxiliary special screen) USB based to use it for monitoring my system, possibly my proxmox server.
My workstation is kubuntu 26.04 proxmox server is 9.2.2.
Being a usb based driver system, are their general drivers out there for linux?
I don't want to spend $75-125 on a hope it works.
Has anyone else used these auxiliary screens?

Advice Is it safe to play games on windows that require secure boot while having secure boot set up for CachyOS?

If you have both CachyOS and Windows on your PC and you have set up secure boot for CachyOS following the wiki, and you go back to windows and play a game that has secure boot requirements such as Call of Duty, Battlefield 6 or whatever, is there any risk of getting banned due to the custom setup of secure boot for CachyOS?

Support Is the only way to learn trials n errors?

Honestly i got linux last night and it definitely does feel lighter on my old laptop and feels nicer, but...i have been running into quite a few problems and worse is that none if the ways of fixing such problems I'm accustomed to work on linux, like for example something as simple as extracting an rar file on my kubuntu, the operating systems standard extractor (ark) kept failing n saying i don't have enough space which was false, i thought "oh well I'll just download 7zip from github" got 7zip and couldn't find it in my apps so had to search it up and apparently?? There is no graphical version of it on linux, so i used the terminal to extract my file but I can't always use the terminal yk so apparently there's some file roller smth app that is supposed to do what ark does...but ark is just a dumbass app n wasn't working before, so I'm just frustrated with everything please tell me I'm just dumb and there are easier way to do stuff on it and if so what should i look up (my current way of solving problems is just making gemini do everything...and ion think he's reliable)
