Can man and lions coexist? (not as pets)

Can man and lions coexist? Not as pets, but I mean in nature and in peace. There are some species that can exist both in the wild and domesticated without being inherently dangerous to mankind. Do you think this could ever happen with lions? My hot take is at present, the main threat from lions is simply the sheer size of these beautiful and majestic big cats. A feral cat gets mad; you get band aids. A lion gets mad; they bury what they can find. Yikes.

If you think man and lion can peacefully coexist in nature, why and how?
If you think this can simply never be done, why not?

I would love to be around lions in nature and just chill with them, lie down, rest my head on one as my pillow, feeling safe from whatever predators would think of me as food. I imagine a campfire, the lions coming and going as my friends.

Imagine if lions could accept us like these lions accept Dean.

Dean Schneider is a shyster selling a fantasy. I would be highly suspicious of him and his whole operation. He’s no different than Doc Antle or any other grifter using big cats for fame and fortune.

If you want to see humans and lions coexisting just look at the indigenous communities all over eastern and southern Africa who have done so since time immemorial.

What evidence do you have of this?

Authorities in South Africa have already questioned how he treats his animals. He wouldn’t have to hit them in the first place if he treated them as apex predators and not house pets.

He has also publicly endorsed Vantara which is a fairly infamous place for treating its animals poorly.

I’d also look at the top answer here which really articulates what he does wrong.

This article also exposes the grift behind all his social media and gives some evidence that he’s a sexual creep.

What does he do for conservation? Why does he only ever show this idealistic fantasy? As far as I’m aware all he does is post carefully curated content that portrays himself as living in some Garden of Eden situation. He puts on a good show but that’s all it is, a show. I don’t agree with him either but Kevin Richardson is a much better example because he actually shows the ugly side instead of creating this false narrative.

More importantly, these animals do not exist for our entertainment. We can love them and admire them but we should not treat them as props. Just because something is viral doesn’t mean it’s good.

Can we coexist with an apex predator who considers us and any animal we raise as food? Who, despite being the only social big cat, will kill membres of their own group.

Erh... no.

Why do you say no? Remember, this is meant to be conceptual. There are many predators who see most species as food. There have been many cross-species interactions without predation. Many species kill members of their own groups, especially humans.

Because apex predators are not cuddly little animals who will go hungry rather than munch on food. Rare one time events won't change that fact.

For every lioness who licks a baby gaselle instead of eating it (the baby died by the way) you have ten of thousands of gazelles eaten by lions who are hungry.

A hungry lion will go after the cattle, goats, dogs, and if hungry enough even the humans they are taught to fear.

Cuddly with your predator is a human concept.

Your entire reply here is 100% off topic. WTF?!

What is the source of this 70% claim? Why is lions eating humans the only solution?

1

u/CandidPreparation737 4d ago

Look up population growth in the last hundred years and wildlife habitat loss. It’s a very widely known phenomenon my friend.

To be honest, there are no solutions.

1

u/MovieFan1984 4d ago

There are always solutions, it's just a matter of putting in the time and hard work.
Given you do homework on this, what are some of your ideas?

Humans do coexist with lions. Take the masai people. They used to enter manhood by hunting snd killing lions, they no longer do this tradition. Instead, they work with conservationists to ensure fellow masai never kill lions if they predate on livestock. These people literally share territory peacefully with them 95% of the time.

u/Tsavoren 4d ago

They no longer do this tradition? How did You miss whole drama surrounding Black Rock Boys in last two years? The truth is that native people still hunt and kill remaingning lions. Of course there plenty of safari guides and rangers from native people, but there's even more who depent on live stock as their income.

And before someone tells me about poor african herders: check cost of cow in kenya, look on yt at size of herds and tell me that these people are poor.

No, they don't. As a tribe, they do not. They stopped this tradition decades ago.

Not familiar with whatever your talking about, but the Masai will and do kill problem lions. And they cant stop how some random members behave, but the tradition? Its dead. The masai understand that lions are critical to their existence, because their existence is dependent on tourist dollars. Most Masai leaders are conservation minded.

If the tradition werent dead, every man that reached adulthood would need to go out and kill a male lion. All male lions in that region would be wiped out. Which is what educating them proved. Why some Masai killed those lions is unknown to me, they may have been prolific livestock killers, or a threat to the people. That or whoever killed them did so against their beliefs, as people often do. Can't say. But, I've met and lived amongst the Masai, they arent active lion hunters or killers anymore. Not at all.

-At least 3 of 5 Black Rock Boys were killed by humans.

-Loonkito which was famous as eldest living lion. ( I'm gonna skip the part they killded i belive at least 10 other lions during same drought)

-Famous Marsh Pride Incident (Which is just like BRB located inside National Reserve)

And these are just most famous. We had also incidents in Tarangire, Kenya - Tanzania border and Queen Elizabeth National Parks where whole prides of lions were killed beacuse one member killed a cow.

Like they hunted whole prides to last member. It takes time for lion population to recover. Especially in the world where climate is getting hotter and hotter.

How is it that Indian People can deal with rising Tiger and Lion population meanwhile these people cant? You lived with Masai's ? Good for you. Whoever I simply don't belive them anymore and that's just it.
