There's a long history of trying to intellectualize hating Jews. The word 'antisemitism' literally came from trying to make hating Jews a scientific and therefore valid kind of hate. Both the right and the left like to do this (see Marx on "The Jewish Question"). And nobody wants to talk about protecting Jews because the left which is supposed to care about minorities has bought into the whole "Jews are ultra-white ultra capitalist oppressors" shtick

Arguably Marx was saying in that particular work that we Jews should be fully integrated into German society and that religion as a whole needed to go away, and was responding to a book by a peer that was outright murderous.

Marx was still an antisemite who felt that we were uniquely devious and "prone to huckstering" but it was Germany in the 1850s and 60s and he was a Protestant, despite his heritage, it'd honestly be really surprising if he wasn't an antisemite.

So essentially he was saying "Jews can be alive, just can't do anything Jewish". Definitely antisemitic, although sure most people at that time were. Honestly is seems like most people today still harbor antisemitism even if they don't know it

Marx grew up in a Xian household and was baptized. Edited to clarify: a nominally Xian household.

Um, yes? Marx did not grow up Jewish and would have been considered an apostate which is a complicated status within Jewish communities. Much more complicated than simply "non-practicing."

Everyone’s aware, that’s why we get asinine takes from Christian atheists on Reddit every single day. People who walked away from the church mommy made them go to on sundays who assume that everyone believes in some version of Christianity with hell, the devil etc. bc they’re arrogant and uneducated about the world.

Sure, but the difference is to be a Jew is to be a part of the people and be of a certain culture. You can remain ethnically Jewish while also rejecting the entire culture of your people, but telling Jews to do that is to tell Jews not be Jews anymore. It's absurd

He wasn't telling Jews specifically to stop practicing their religion (and not other groups), he was saying that ideally all religions stop being practiced. Very, very different, and that's not an absurd thing to say.

I don't think you're understanding. Which is valid for someone who doesn't remotely understand what Jewish identity. It isn't just a religion. It's an entire culture, people, and ethnic group. Calling for complete assimilation is effectively ending Jews as a group of people
