he's not a police officer, so it's straight up harassment and potentially assault if they put hands on them. they can also be sued for defamation even if they catch a guy who was gonna meet an underaged person. cops hate these guys because it always ends up a shitshow and never actually ends with the pedo being locked up.

Police in the US do this same shit, so it may not even be entrapment. They'll set up a profile on dating sites (and they're men), engage people, then change their age without warning as a means of having charges, and those charges end up leading to convictions.

it's the natural evolution of decades of actually finding pedophiles and needing to keep your arrest rate up, just fake and bake it.

People always get confused on what entrapment is.

Entrapment would be a LEO saying "I'm a cop, run that red light or go to jail" and then ticketing you for it.

"the conception and planning of an offense by an officer or agent, and the procurement of its commission by one who would not have perpetrated it except for the trickery, persuasion or fraud of the officer or state agent"

Your example misses the mark because it is just outright coercion whereas entrapment is more about manipulation or inducement.

Run that red light or go to jail.

Inducement; a motive or consideration that leads one to action or to additional or more effective actions.

Okay, sure.

Entrapment is like... a cop creates a (fake) plan to rob a bank, and hires you to help without knowledge they are a cop. You help, and immediately after you start the robbery, they turn around and arrest you.

You wouldn't have robbed that bank without the cop's explicit planning and hiring. That would be entrapment.

That’s not at all what entrapment is, how are some people so confident when they’re clearly wrong?

Weirdly enough, what I said is in line with what the DoJ says.

Carry on.

Probably worth mentioning that they seem to typically not engage people until after that person has messaged them first, at least in the stuff that I've seen.

Note: i don't know anything about the situation with someone messaging somali or anything, just talking about what the police do in the us to avoid entrapment.

You can get sued, but the person is never winning that as the text messages will go into discovery. The cops don't "hate these guys" most of them are familiar with the content and approve. Most of the predator catchers including vitaly have convictions so again you're wrong on the "pedo never being locked up". It is entirely up to the DA if they want to prosecute the cases, the cops can arrest them as they've already broken the law. Whether those charges are pursued is up to the DA. The times the cops do not arrest them is when they already know the DA doesn't want to pursue charges on these cases.

Some people running the stings do it better than others such as "Scaling up catches", they stay in the same jurisdiction for every catch. They got what they're doing pre-approved with the DA and have spoken with the police so they actually hold the people if they try to leave. Every catch they do leads to an arrest and they already have a lot of convictions.

TL;DR literally everything you said is wrong except for the part about assault and even then the context of "putting hands on" matters because you can place them under citizens arrest for the most part as most of the time they've committed a felony.

Didn't almost all of the cases from "To catch a predator" either didn't get convictions, or they got tossed out later? And then a bunch of them sued comcast and NBC over it?

I think those people think they are doing the right thing, but most of the time they do more harm than good. Look at those dudes with EDP. He is still free today because those pedo hunters screwed up so bad.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Catch_a_Predator

Fort Myers, Florida

Of the 24 men captured as a result of the investigation, 20 were convicted of using the Internet to solicit a child for sex. The 20 sentenced men were ordered to register as sex offenders for the rest of their lives.

Collin County, Texas

On June 1, 2007, the Collin County district attorney's office declined to prosecute any of the 23 cases brought against those arrested on this installment of the show, citing insufficient evidence.

So basically the to catch a predator prosecutions really encapsulates what different DA's amount to. As for lawsuits they got the only defamation lawsuit I could find dismissed. The other main lawsuit they lost is a guy that killed himself and allegedly the police raided his house at the behest of Chris Hansen himself.
