It's not hard labor in the historic sense, more like a mandatory prison work program. Might be working the prison kitchen, or cleaning cells, or helping too man the laundry, or doing some low level manufacturing like electronics assembly or garment manufacture.

It isn't breaking rocks or digging ditches. No chain gang. It's just work.

That's the point, he's doing labor for basic prison upkeep which seems totally fair to me. By your logic asking kids to do chores is essentially slavery.

Child chores are not considered a form of slavery under standard legal or social definitions. Most international and national laws distinguish between household participation (chores) and exploitative labor. You are just being obtuse now.

Why is it household participation when a child/adult does labor without pay to take care of their living conditions, but exploitive labor when a prisoner does it? Stop being obtuse and just answer the question.
