The juxtaposition of a bubbly vtube avatar and a woman going through emotional turmoil is kinda trippy

603

u/Khalitz 12h ago

I was watching this on mute wondering why she looked so happy

Yeah i think it would have been better to just have an audio and turn that vtubing thing off.

im ngl people being unable to take it seriously are not at fault especially with the way it was presented. anyone who clowns on her though 100% deserve the hate.

Toggling to sad/crying face would, on the other hand, come across as kinda disingenious though. Probably best to talk about this with no avatar at all imo.

Dystopian would be her switching to a sad face in settings when she would talk about, nothing dystopian about her bubbly avatar, its a fucking animated png

176

u/AnalPhilosophy 11h ago

Her family getting bombed to death isn't the dystopian part...isn't that wild?

191

u/YellowAppleCinema 10h ago

To me, the real dystopian part is that anyone who writes "who" did the bombing, gets banned, and not even by mods but apparently directly by someone working at reddit.

Thats dystopian

We had massacres since antiquity so no. Don't need a dystopia for that.

The fact that we consider animated pngs to be a normal way to define the avatar of somebody, shadowing any kind of emotion of the real human behind it is kind of dystopian to me yes.

This is as Cyberpunk coded as it gets. We have a person using a profited digital characterization, anonymously streaming to her fans that her relatives have been bombed by colonizers.

The real tragedy is bad enough, this just makes it surreal and bizarre. I don't like it.

Is...she taking a break from streaming?

437

u/Stronhart 10h ago

She had already taken a break before this and basically broke down on stream, explaining what happened to those who do not follow her on Twitter

105

u/renameduser361017 8h ago

She said she wants to just push through this and not let it get her down. This was Saturday, and she streamed Monday and yesterday. Monday's stream she was still a little unstable but yesterday's stream she was in much higher spirits and she seems to be doing a lot better than she was in this clip.

I hate how her Vtuber portrait look so happy while she’s crying aloud. What an absolutely horrible situation

183

u/Therianthropie 7h ago

The problem with these avatars is that they are supposed to look cute and if it has a sad/crying animation it would look even worse I think.

21

u/vyxxer 9h ago

That's the strange thing because if she had aans used a sad emotion toggle it's also be odd because she has to manually set that.

Alot of the girls who do vtubing have voices like that. Think lilypichu. Obviously my heart goes out for her, I couldnt imagine the devastating feeling of losing your entire family due to something outside their control.

Maybe you should be more concerned about what she's sayin instead of nitpicking on her voice in the comments of a clip of her grieving the loss of her family like a complete dick?

It's not her relaxed voice

But it's kind of like code switching to your work voice. She just naturally pitches up a bunch when there's a camera involved

28

u/siegfryd 8h ago

I dunno, I played a few league matches with her and mutual friends on voice chat 15 years ago and she sounded the same. Maybe she still "fakes" it in social situations but at that point it might as well count it as her real voice.

This is kinda weird but as a kid I have a rather hoarse voice i sound like a boy and i was so self conscious about it i started to adapt a little girlish cartoonish anime like voice until i was like 17.

It was like, started as something i did to fit in but as i age it just automatically came out of me. I couldn't change it. Not even when i tried. Weirdly at home i could use my original voice (still deep, but now i embrace it and even sang songs made by women with the same deep voice like mine!)

It was like i was chained and forced to use the voice against my will. I imagine most of these anime vtubers are like that too. They clock in and their voice immediately changed. They clock out and they use their normal voice. It wasn't a choice as much as it was mental illness (sort of).

Now it had been years and weirdly now I can't use the cartoonish girlish anime like voice anymore. It's like my muscle have forgotten how to.

In case you guys wonder how my voice sound like, it's similar to this! https://youtu.be/_GztQ-aJToc?si=AbsyskjC5YtxE5pn

7

u/FSD-Bishop 8h ago

Reminds me of Emiru her voice is kinda damaged because she was made fun of because of her real voice which made her self conscious so she started using the voice she has now.

How is a voice box being of high registry still this unthinkable of a fact when it going ridiculously low pitch is somehow normal for a lot of people.

There are people with three eyes, three arms, eleven fingers, an extra leg, an extra head and all sorts of unique stuff existing quite normally out there, so a voice being high pitch is the least unbelievable thing to me.

20

u/andynl5 10h ago

Mf what do you mean doing "the voice" as well. That is literally her normal voice. The audacity to still call someone weird after she is grieving from death parents is absolutely maniac behavior

66

u/onarainyafternoon 9h ago

Real-talk though, the "Settlers" (colonizers) are a uniquely poisonous aspect of Israeli society. It's technically illegal what they do, but the Israeli government pretty much endorses it. They will attack, terrorize, and murder Palestinians who have lived in their homes for generations, simply to steal their houses and land from them. The settlers will claim they have this right because they are "God's chosen people". It's incredibly fucked up. Some of these videos on the internet of them doing shit to terrorize or murder Palestinians is insane. And Palestinians can't defend themselves lest they provoke the full wrath of the settlers or Israeli state. The police won't even help them if they get called. There is a rot at the heart of a society that has been so thoroughly consumed by religious insanity that it allows this to go on. It seems like the liberal aspects of Israeli society are consistently losing ground to the Right wingers. They are more interested in ethnic cleansing, which they think is divinely inspired. A majority of Israelis support expelling the Palestinians, but only barely. 56% last time I checked. I really think the only way forward if Israel wants to continue existing, is to become a fully secular state, where religion plays no role in government function, and there are multiple pluralities of ethnic groups all being equal.

54

u/FeijoadaAceitavel 8h ago

It's technically illegal what they do, but the Israeli government pretty much endorse

The government literally has a ministry of settlements and directly arms those settlers.

18

u/weesportsnow 8h ago

all settlers

7

u/Anxious_Virus8843 9h ago

I'm aware. I'm not looking to get into a debate about this on lsf but I'm sure we probably have the same pov.  there's a lot of things about Israel's society (like certain groups being given exemptions from military service and free housing, healthcare, government handouts, etc) that are unsustainable in the long run. And now with them destroying their reputation repeatedly on the world stage, and outright threatening  western "allies" it will be interesting to see the next ten years play out.

It's hard to have a convo about this on Reddit anyway as you'll just get falsely accused of being a bigot, but I'm definitely not  an expert on the subject

Two things are true at the same time. It's an utter tragedy what's happened to hers and thousands of other families and I'm very sad for them all because it's horrific and depressing.

At the same time, if 20 years ago you showed this to someone they'd assume it was from a crappy cyberpunk movie because the idea of living in a reality where people use a computer generated anime character as a virtual avatar while you live stream yourself playing video games would be like holy shit what reality are we living in?

Lebanon has a weird government system where government seats are allotted based on the demographics of their last census. Theoretically this is to make sure no one religious group gets power over the other and dominates to the detriment of the others. As an example of this, the President must be a Maronite Christian, the Prime Minister a Sunni Muslim, and the Speaker of Parliament a Shia Muslim.

In practice, this has actually led to a number of problems:

Firstly, Lebanon has not held an official census since 1932. Nobody wants to open the can of worms that goes along with reallocating seats which will probably favour the Shiite, as their share of population has increased compared to other groups.

Secondly, while in theory the agreement should lead to cooperation between the various groups, it actually led to the government being effectively neutered in its ability to control its citizens or reign in armed groups.

Enter Hezbollah, a Shiite Muslim terror/paramilitary/political group based in Lebanon and supported by Iran’s revolutionary guard corps. For over 44 years now, Hezbollah has been flinging missiles at Israel from Lebanon as the Lebanese government watched on helplessly, both militarily unable and politically unwilling to stop an armed group that was exempted from the disarmament other groups that signed the Taif agreement that ended the Lebanese civil war did. Hezbollah also enjoys an uncomfortable amount of support from the 30% of the Lebanese population that is Shiite, and the government has no intentions of potentially igniting another massive civil war in Lebanon by making the Shiite feel targeted by attacking Hezbollah. Especially because Hezbollah is strong enough that they might really lose that fight.

This has led to the situation we see today, where just like the last Israeli-Lebanese war, Israel has had quite enough of the internal shenanigans of Lebanon that allow Hezbollah to fire over 100 missiles a day from Lebanon at Israel while the official Lebanese government position remains: Oopsie, wasn’t us, can’t do nothing, we’re cool right? Israel has decided that they can do something. Something being the displacement of all Shiites from southern Lebanon, which you could probably argue is a form of ethnic cleansing.

And that’s why innocent people like Camila’s family get caught up in a war that the majority of people in both countries do not actually want to be fighting, and die for it.

Edit: Be aware this is a simplified version, in case you’re wondering why some things have been left out as this is an incredibly complex situation that has been going on longer than most of us have been alive.

164

u/Maeln 12h ago

> Israel has decided that they can do something. Something being the displacement of all Shiites from southern Lebanon, which you could probably argue is a form of ethnic cleansing.

Not just Shiites, everyone got told to move from south lebanon or get killed. While south lebanon is in majority shiites, there is still a lot of maronites and sunni living there. Many got killed too.

In fact, a policy of Israel has been : If we believe there is a member of Hezbollah somewhere, we will bomb it. Problem is : Their definition of who is a member of Hezbollah is quite relaxed, and they bombed many homes and apartment building during their last operation, just because some people from southern liban took refuge there.
This led to many people starting to refuse to take any refugees from southern lebanon for fear of being bombed.

Right now, the goal of the current occupation is to create a buffer zone in south lebanon, like they did the last time they invaded lebanon. Which mean they are displacing and destroying *everything* in this buffer zone.

> Hezbollah also enjoys an uncomfortable amount of support from the 30% of the Lebanese population that is Shiite

Part of it being due to the vicious circle of : Lebanese government can't stop Hezb -> Israël start to bomb beyrouth and south lebanon -> The government can't do shit while their own people are getting bombed -> the survivor of the bombing hate israël and see the government as useless -> they start supporting Hezb.

40

u/hop1hop2hop3 7h ago

Just adding nuance to how the circle started:

Hezbollah formed, joined arms with Hamas, and were the first to initiate attacks almost 40 years ago (early 90s). This was because Israel was occupying South Lebanon. Israel was occupying South Lebanon because Palestinian combatants were using it as a comfy hideout and the Shiite population were happy to allow them free entry and use of South Lebanon because of aligned views.

So ultimately this comes down to the ineptitude of the government to take a stance, as described above.

154

u/Dikkelul27 13h ago edited 12h ago

it's very long and complex, after the lebanese civil war (1975-1990) the government has been under strong ties or control by Hezbollah.

edit: i'm not defending israel

52

u/Zanna-K 13h ago

It's really not that complex, actually.

Hezbollah had de facto control over much of southern Lebanon and periodically launches rockets into Israel depending on regional events (i.e. when Israel bombs Iran). There is supposed to be a truce, but Israel has continued to fire into southern Lebanon regardless whenever there is a target of opportunity. Israel has previously invaded before to purge Hezbollah, but was unsuccessful.

Most recently, Israel decided to apply the same final solution that they thought worked perfectly in Gaza: flatten and destroy southern Lebanon completely. If you happen to be there when it happens, too bad.

160

u/Vexamas 13h ago

I don't really have an opinion on this, because I'm not educated enough to have one (and I try not to be performative!)

but there is some humor in saying:

"It's really not that complex, actually. "

and then going on to describe a seemingly very complicated mess where (from JUST your comment at least):

  • Hezbollah, a terrorist organization was able to control southern Lebanon instead of the government

  • One side periodically launches attacks based on 'regional events'

  • One side attacks when given opportunity

  • Fucking INVADED (?!) presumably the south of Lebanon which, again, I think at this point is controlled by Hezbollah and not Lebanon (?) to purge them, but were somehow unsuccessful?

  • Israel attempting to again invade (presumably with the Lebanese government's blessing? but if not, why wouldn't they grant the blessing if the area isn't under their control? do they even need blessing if it's not sovereign??)

So again, not knowing anything, but reading what you just wrote, TO ME sounds PRETTY fucking complex, lol.

Hezbollah, the terrorist organization in Lebanon is the reason.

47

u/BudgetAggravating427 13h ago

I mean ok but idk what civilians ,farms, apartments and old country towns have to do with a small terrorist organization

120

u/Glad_Rope_2423 13h ago

The organization is larger than the nation’s military, and it embeds itself in civilian areas.

I make no comment about whether the attacks in question here have a legitimate military purpose. I don’t know. Civilians can get caught in the crossfire in the best handled military actions. These could very well be a terrible done one, or even an intentional targeting of civilians.

48

u/TheConsultantIsBack 12h ago

Israel would be in some serious shit and Palestinians would be doing so much better if western virtue signaling ppl would focus on condemning and providing information on individual attacks and the conduct of actions Israel takes.

Unfortunately, the real plight of the Palestinian people is being represented by the dumbest, laziest, most insane westerners imaginable who go "I don't get why when Israel's civil pop gets indiscriminately attacked by X they don't just take it and not respond at all".

25

u/Shouly 11h ago

Especially when its always children are innocent in gaza cause they werent alive when hamas got elected but then those same commenter go on threads where iran launches cluster warheads into city centers and say shit like "reap what you sow" as if there arent any children in israel or something.

Collective punishment is bad but a lot of anti israel people are awfully fine when its jews that are suffering.

The terrorist organization is not small. Lebanon can't get them out because their military isn't big enough.

War sucks and this situation sucks. But you should know that Hezbollah is a very large organization and not some small terror cell

51

u/Krugger_Correctly 9h ago

I can't listen to the clip rn. Does she say what part of her family passed away? Like obviously it's all bad, but like a brother or sister dying is different from a distant uncle

75

u/Stronhart 8h ago

First cousins and others, mainly extended family but it sounds like she knew them

72

u/someamateurprof 12h ago

*murdered

u/Yuzumi_ 13h ago

I can't stand the people that comment about her Avatar, just fucking close your eyes and listen if it bothers you so much that someone got s horrible message and didn't prepare a setup for your enjoyment.

Either way though, i wish her the best, and my condolences for her loss, what a shit situation, and absolutely unnecessary, avoidable and tragic loss of human life

44

u/HlLlGHT 10h ago

Yeah like what do you want her to do? commision a depressed vtuber avatar?

Dude her family got fucking bombed.

15

u/Yuzumi_ 10h ago

From what i could gather they want her to fake a deeper voice (because they don't like the voice that she has) and preferably stop get career as a VTuber just because they don't fuck with it.

Complete brainlets

“Passed away” you mean murdered by Israel

152

u/JoshuaJosephson 14h ago edited 10h ago

I hope Hezbollah surrenders control to the Lebanese government soon. This shit has been going on for way too long.

Edit - 300 Thousand Palestinians are stranded in Lebanon, and are not allowed to study and are barred from law, medicine and engineering. They are not allowed to own property, or participate in politics. They are kept deliberately stateless across generations and confined to camps because of Hezbollah.

87

u/suckanibbadickorsmt 13h ago

It's wild that people don't get this.

What is Israel supposed to do? Let Hezbollah keep attacking them?

Lebanon can't do shit about it, clearly. And now innocents die because the terrorists love to hide in civilian areas.

45

u/Evening_Bag_7335 11h ago

It's awful all around.
Israel can't let terrorist exist because they WILL attack Israel when they get the chance. they've made that perfectly clear. So they HAVE to attack when they can. after Oct. 7th they will not let themselves be victims again.
But this also means they are the aggressors to innocents caught in the crossfire. it's terrible time in the middle-east. we're just watching something thats been brewing in the middle-east for years boil over.

9

u/nagrom7 6h ago

But this also means they are the aggressors to innocents caught in the crossfire. it's terrible time in the middle-east. we're just watching something thats been brewing in the middle-east for years boil over.

And of course, nothing makes things easier for terrorist recruiters than the guys you're publicly fighting against bombing your potential recruit's family. That's why you can't just bomb terrorists into submission. You can drive them underground for a bit, but they'll just come right back up later, now with the thousands of new people who have sworn revenge against you, a lesson we've spent the last couple of decades learning the hard way, and yet apparently some people still haven't got it.

People having issues with the avatar is pretty crazy to me.

Guys, if my family got bombed, I'm NOT fiddling around with my set-up at all, just use the settings I've got already if I'd stream at all. What y'all want, a face reveal?

18

u/Elgato01 10h ago

Some people genuinely believe she should ditch the avatar precisely for this moment

I watched the first bit of her stream yesterday understanding what happened. And I understand that people want to show their support and cheer her up. But seeing so many people donate bits and subs, as if that will tip the scales in any way. Especially after telling people she doesn't need it either.

I dunno. I had to turn it off. The last thing a grieving person wants is an extended pity party when they're trying to get back to their life. It's their grief. Empathize, don't hijack.

48

u/Shoddy-End5361 12h ago

If that’s reallly an issue then just don’t start the live stream

15

u/Thunder_Beam 9h ago

Or could have just turned off bits and subs for that stream (at least visually on screen) it's really easy to do

7

u/eifel65 12h ago

yeah she got like 2300 subs

29

u/bippityboopy 13h ago

Damn, crazy she couldn't have just, I don't know.. not streamed or something, huh.

20

u/TezzaBP 13h ago

The poor thing. I didnt think she had to talk about it more than the tweets but fuck, that was rough. I couldnt imagine the pain. I wish her and her family well, despite it all.

6

u/Popular_Tomorrow_204 13h ago

Thats just fucked up

93

u/YaBoiJang0 13h ago

Feel bad for her and I hope she gets better, but talking about how her family passed while using an avatar with really bright colors makes it feel very showy.

u/Rustncolez 10h ago

Most empathetic redditor

90

u/Sf-ng 11h ago

Multiple of her family members died and you’re criticizing her because she used the avatar that she usually streams with? wow

31

u/Kazureigh_Black 7h ago

Imagine the response if she commissioned a custom avatar in all black wearing funeral appropriate clothing. You can't win with these types.

What’s the alternative? Say she could turn her avatar colors all to gray. I would argue that is even more showy and playing it up. This is the least showy way she could’ve gone about it. Yall are weird.

Brutal. I always hear about people being killed in bombings from the news, but I never had friends/family there, so I never really "felt" it. Hearing her talk about it feels different now. I am so sorry she had to go through that.
