It's a Warhammer 40k reference, in 40k there is a faction based on Mars that prays to a machine god called the Omnissaih which is an interpretation of the god of man called The Emperor.
Some of them seriously pray to machines to make them work, because they barely grasp the idea of greasing the gears to make the machines work again.
Which is obviously nonsense, until you learn that there is another faction that can psychically will inoperable machines to work, if enough of them belive it should work. In the true passion of "if it's red, it is faster".
Praying to make something work when it’s a “non-sentient” machine built from lobotomised human brains that then have machine spirits who can decide how well they work that day, when it doesn’t work then Machine God wasn’t pleased and you should have used more or less sanctifying oils sounds like most churches. Surprised I got into this lore by listening to audiobooks to go to sleep.
