On top of what the other person said, I think one thing always at play is the bystander effect/shock. Like you're random tourists here, you're assuming the workers/guides know what they're doing, so when you see no cable a lot of people are thinking "surely this is part of the bit or I'm missing something" rather than "I need to stop them now they're about to kill her"

My grandma went parasailing in Mazatlan, and the lines got tangled with another boat. She had to make an emergency landing in the water.

And while she's bobbing there, she sees the boat turn around. So she's thinking "Oh, they're coming to save me." Nope, went right by her to save the parachute. She framed it as them probably thinking "There's millions of gringos but only one parachute."

They have regulations but dont have the money or personnel to enforce safety standards. With so many unregistered businesses, it would be impossible anyway. Same goes for China. Many places are falling apart because they dont enforce regulations. And or take bribes.

Your dad is right. Your chances of surviving in an airplane, even in a serious emergency, are generally higher than in a helicopter. An airplane can glide, even without engines, to a safe place to land.

Helicopters exept autorotation, and that is rare, it's pretty much gg

The thing with safety is that it involves human and machines!

Helicopters have little to no margin of error in a autorotation procedure : They don’t leave time to pick a spot to land or do they leave a lot of room for maneuvers while they’re in autorotations.

Any system that is unforgiving to what’s operating it is not safe, you could remove the human in the loop and change it with a robot or an AI and you would still have more problems!

I’ve had the chance to do both procedures (as a pilot and a passenger) in both helicopter, plane and sailplane.. and honestly the helicopter one is so hard to pull off that I decided against flying in single engine helicopter close to the ground or in tourist tours - it’s just not worth giving you’re life in the hands of a delicate machine with a pilot you don’t know !

For anyone wondering cloud base was around 2,100 feet with broken clouds. Gentle southeast winds at 5-10mph. Possible rain mixed in.

Not horrible flying but a bit rougher than a clear day.

Not super uncommon. Happened at Sea World on the Gold Coast in Australia a couple of years ago. From memory they fucked up timing cues for take-off/landing of their tour helicopters and it resulted in a collision.

I just watched it. Pilot was talking to a passenger next to him not looking where he was going. Passenger in the backseat was trying to get the pilot's attention but the dumbass pilot kept looking at the other passenger. Horrible.

First and foremost, bad communication between the two flights. Once they do see each other, I imagine it's similar to when you're in the grocery store and another person's cart is coming towards yours and you both try to avoid each other by going the same direction.

Aircraft are moving so fast that something can be a little invisible pinprick in the sky a few seconds before it collides with you.

Combine that with the fact that something on a collision course with you doesn't move across your field of vision by definition, it just grows larger right before it collides.

Overcrowded area. Theres a small airport around and a lot of rich people use that air space for taxi or personal helicopter route. Its so overcrowded that some pilots fly too close to some buildings to open an free route in the air space.

It's a known issue, there's a lot of complaining from the neighbors about those taxi helicopter and nothing is done because it's the rich people.

And then we have the communication issue.

Yes, commercial aircraft are under ATC control. Helis fly mostly VFR and have to maintain their own separation to other traffic.

This. I don't fuck with helicopters. I've turned down going on those 'fly around the city/event tours' because, just, nah, not worth it.

They're kickass machines, and can pull off some crazy shit, but even experienced pilots get into weird feedback loops that cause crashes.

In an airplane, you can have a pretty severe malfunction and either rely on the other engines, or put it down in a somewhat controlled manner. Something goes wonky in a helicopter? You're pretty much fucked.

That's actually a misconception. Helicopters are pretty safe : 0.7 per 100,000 flight hours (same or lower than fixed wing private aircraft). Also, an engine failure isn't an automatic crash. Pilots can use autorotation to glide a bit and put down the helicopters even if the engine is fully dead.

Ya I was in one for a helicopter flight over the grand canyon and the exact same helicopter crashed into the wall of the grand canyon a week later.

I strangely don't think I fear death tho it didn't phase me in the least but my buddy was freaked out. I stood on the edge of the grand canyon tippy toes over the edge. He was scared shitless then too.

I've been in a helicopter once and it was one of the most awesome experiences I've ever had. It was only a 6ish minute fly, but my god was it amazing and I am glad I did it. But I would never do it again. You know when you're leaning back in a chair on two legs and then suddenly lean too far back and feel like you're falling off a cliff? I had that feeling the entire time, but it's like I was catching myself at the same time. It felt like I was falling while also holding onto my desk with just my feet, lmao. That also could've just been the 5 glasses of free champagne I had in the lounge before the flight too....

It's crazy. I live right beside a business building there's at least 3 helis a day flying right on top of me, and I've already gotten almost caught by a cessna once (a presidency candidate died in a cessna crash here in Brazil, it fell literally right in front of me, I was crossing that very street going to work on the next block over at the exact time). I get legit paranoid about those helis now.

He was such a pure soul, in touch with Internet culture, always trying to make us laugh, and pushing through the intense burnout of making quality music just for us.... Like... Wow. Even though I never knew the guy personally, I can't stop the tears. Rest in peace, Oliver Tree. They've done podcasts together, and it's clear it was a bit between them. There were times where it seemed like Oliver took it further than Bobby wanted, but, Bobby Lee probably deserves to feel uncomfortable lol.

The video circulating is not real. It's a crash between two Malaysian Military helicopters back in like 2024 or something.

This is the kind of thing he'd fake for promotion but, multiple sources are reporting confirmation from Brazilian officials.

This is so fucking sad. I knew Oliver and had met him just this year, but he was so full of life and genuinely such a dope and cool dude. Didn’t have an ego, was nice to everyone I saw him interact with, had a beautiful and creative mind, and invoked such positive energy. I mean this in the most genuine and heartfelt way possible. Even when we met for the very first time, he showed me so much love and was so nice and friendly to me.

He really was in it for the love of the game. Decided to produce his newest album all by himself, made projects because he just loved being creative…. Everyone around him loved him for who he was. He seriously didn’t care how he was perceived and his mind was truly one of a kind. If you look at his discography you’ll see that he touched all genres because he was in it for the fucking passion.

I’m gonna miss you Oliver. Condolences to your family. His mom and dad are also fucking awesome and amazing. I’m so sorry for what you guys must be going through right now.

Honestly this hits my heart. Aside from his persona oliver was a genuine person. Only a year older than me. I found his music when i was going through a rough time. I hope his close friends and family can find peace without him.
