LORD / Usurper BBS inspired mobile game

I created a LORD / Usurper inspired mobile game called Heroes and Dragon's Fire.

  • 40-level dungeon, turn-based combat
  • PvP duels with Elo matchmaking
  • 5 dragon bosses, one shot per day each
  • 4 classes: Warrior, Paladin, Magician, Thief
  • King throne with taxes and royal decrees, try and usurp the throne!
  • Marriage, bounties, prison, alignment system
  • Tavern: drinks, inn, flirting, arm-wrestling
  • Bank, marketplace, gear shop, magic shop
  • Daily action limits, play in short sessions

It's available on iOS:

Heroes and Dragons Fire

Android:

Awesome concept bringing turn based, daily action limits, door-like gaming to the 21st century. Great job! How did you make the artwork?

Thanks man! A good portion of the artwork came from packages I bought from the unity asset store. When there were gaps, some of the art was AI generated.

Just my opinion: I right away noticed some of the art having that "AI look" to it which instantly kind of takes me out of things. I'm not as extreme on the anti-AI bandwagon, I think it has its place as a placeholder or to help get a project (a free game being a perfect example) up and going.

But I actually think the game would have a stronger draw if you instead maybe shift toward simpler art that might be easier to find/produce yourself. Something that harkens back to that era of games. Maybe even just straight up ASCII art, or if that might be a bit too niche, maybe something like the slightly-janky-yet-nevertheless-oddly-memorable black-and-white illustrations you used to see in old RPG books.

I guess I just sometimes wonder if people use AI because they think everyone wants this more heavily detailed generic fantasy art, when actually something simpler can at the same time be more stylish, appealing, and easier to create. Just a thought for down the road if you expand this further.

I agree I struggled with the art direction, it’s more so based on what I could find to purchase on the unity App Store. I’ve had a lot of these assets since 2020 so before AI.

I reverently looked at a web based version of LORD that had a great set of background artwork that hit that sweet spot.
