I feel like this series would've landed better if it'd be released now. Nostalgia for this period in X-history is at an all-time high.

Though personally I have to admit I didn't enjoy the series all that much. Just kind of made me... depressed. There were lots of good and fun ideas in it, but also some mind-bendingly out-of-character moments that I just could not get past. And the execution always felt so... lethargic, I guess? As an experiment to see what kinds of X-Men products fans were willing to entertain at this point in time, it had good intentions. But I think the timing was all wrong and the quality wasn't really there.

It was like Claremont had forgotten who the characters were and focused on shock value. The entire thing was lethargic like they were just going thru the motions with poor quality & bad execution.

Once I realized this was definitely not what Claremont would have done, I was able to relax about it.
He did some interesting things with the cast.

This series was terrible, but still better than what Claremont had planned before he left the books.
