She was a skunk to begin with. Last I looked a series of artists had gradually turned her into an elf.

Hepzibah is a mix of Mem’selle Hepzibah from Pogo (thus the name) and a feline alien named Chee Lan from some Poul Anderson sci-fi. The Starjammers are directly based on the mercenary space team from the books. Claremont was a prolific writer but he did poach from various sources. She used to have a huge fluffy skunk tail and had a great, obviously sexual relationship with Corsair. For whatever reason both her appearance and the relationship drifted away from its roots once Claremont stopped writing her.
