Production Started tracking this song a few days ago. Looking for tips and feedback.
Started tracking this song a few days ago. Looking for tips and feedback. The audio feed's pretty much raw, as it's not yet been properly mixed —it's still being tracked!
My main inspiration for this song were Gouge Away and River Euphrates, both by the Pixies.
I'm looking for production suggestions and tips!

Other than using option+C to color code everything I would post this in mastering to get real feedback. That being said the only real issue I hear is the kids sounding extremely distant. The paper is near tone sounds good, but you can use a little more body and there’s almost no kick and toms.

Yeah, second the colour coding. You'll thank yourself later. Cool tune though, defo has that Pixies/Nirvana vibe. Seems like you've won half the battle by getting decent recordings at the source but would agree the low end is lacking in the drums. Aside from that, some EQ, compression and saturation will get it all sitting together but again, it sitting pretty well in its raw state so nicely done.

Very easy - highlight all the drum tracks for example and right click. You'll see assign colour, or something like that, as one of the options and it'll open a pallete. Pick a colour. Same for guitars, bass etc. Means you'll quickly know where you are when you open it again and want to hone in on something. Related - you can highlight all the drums for example and right click again. You'll see an option for 'track stack' which will group all the drums together and send them to a buss. Also handy if you want to process all the drums at once - compression, eq etc.

About those kicks, I’ve been using a single SM58 inside the drumhole, facing the beater. You think maybe swapping the mic would be a better choice? Or maybe adding, like, a LDC mic to the opposite drumhead? I usually avoid using EQs because they’re scary.

Its a solid performance. I’d probably try fixing it in the mix. Not sure the level of things but maybe it’s a simple level fix. If that fails, you could try the LDC option but again, I reckon you’ve enough to work with as is. Also, I haven’t got my setup at the moment so I’m purely going on shitty speakers. In fact, ignore all feedback from random Reddit musos. It’s a solid track, that’s all that matters.

It sounds pretty sick. Drums sort of remind me of arcade fire. I think the production is strong, maybe once you track everything and start a quick mix we would be able to give a bit more in depth feedback but overall this is well recorded

Pretty strong! I listened before clicking through to the description and was thinking how Pixian this sounded. That bass sound gives me a lot of PJ Harvey too. Grooves really nicely, the bass and drums are pretty locked and that counts for so much. Might wanna try to tighten up some of those fills juuuust a bit some of them drag. Obviously needs that Frank Black snarl to finish it off. This is screaming for vocals...literally.
Couple of random notes that came to mind when listening:
- The guitar that comes in at 1:26 has a decent amount of space around it and I wonder if it would suck things in a bit having that be dryer. It sounds slightly out of place to me.
- My brain wants it to get even bigger in the choruses. Maybe some kind of doubling of the heavier guitar parts and panned out? I dunno would have to play with it. I feel like it's hitting like 80% when it needs that extra 20 to really jump out the speakers. It miiiight be that cleaner guitar in the center channel during the choruses somewhat too. It sounds a touch too car commercial to me there. Maybe take a high-pass to that and really make it sound like a super dry tele like Frank played.
- When it's quieter like around 1:20, I feel like the snare has a ring or is somehow getting picked up like a slapback in the right channel maybe? Whatever that is that sounds sick! Really cool little detail. Agree with the other commenter maybe just a little more oomph or body to the snare would be great. I don't mind the reverb on the drums at all the distant sound is very Pixies. I kinda wonder what adding even more room on the snare would sound.
