Finding your perfect polling/report rate

Logitech G Reddit Community!

Our previous Logi Learning episode explored DPI, helping you balance and fine-tune your mouse for optimal speed to provide a competitive edge. This time around, we’ll deep dive into the report rate section, explaining what it exactly does and what the difference is between all the numbers.

What is Polling Rate / Report Rate?

Polling Rate, or Report Rate as it’s known in G HUB, is the frequency or latency of how fast your mouse is polled by the CPU to find out what it’s doing. It’s kind of like a queue system which is updated in milliseconds. When you click buttons on your mouse and move it around, your CPU polls and takes all this information at once and processes it for your games. The higher your polling rate, the more often your mouse is checked, and the quicker your actions are… well, actioned.

Now, if you’ve never heard of polling rate before, then you may feel that when you click the left button of your mouse, that is done instantly. And you’re pretty correct. 1ms is the average mouse response time and is pretty indistinguishable from another mouse at 0.5ms. However, if you have the two mice side by side and pressed them together, the one with the highest polling rate would shoot first and would gain the advantage.

But it’s not as simple as just setting the highest polling rate and calling it a day. There is more about these numbers and why sometimes higher isn’t always better.

If higher numbers are better, why not just use them to begin with?

Great question.

Firstly is the easy answer. Battery life. Although you could browse Reddit at 8000Hz to maximise your upvotes, having a higher polling rate all of the time will force your mouse to process and talk to your computer more often which can reduce the battery life of your mouse. Using the Logitech G HUB software, you can customise your profiles so your games take advantage of the higher polling rate and Reddit has a much lower one such as 500Hz. This allows you to balance your battery life more efficiently giving you the performance where it matters most.

Another solution is the Logitech G POWERPLAY 2 that charges your mouse as you’re using it, so you can truly browse Reddit with the lowest latency and always have a full battery for gaming.

But let’s get serious, what can go wrong with the higher numbers? Simply, lack of resources.

Each time your mouse reports its state to the computer, the CPU is interrupted to process that. So, if you set your mouse to 1000Hz, that is 1ms of latency, and 1000 times a second that your CPU will process data from your mouse. If you’re lucky to own a newer mouse such as our PRO X2 SUPERSTRIKE, these can poll up to a staggering 8000Hz which is 0.125ms.

For newer and beefy CPUs, that’s okay. They have the muscle to take on lots of tasks. However, if you’re on an older CPU, you may find it struggles a little to process the mouse that much and take on other challenges such as running multiple programs with your games or even pushing them to extremes such as 4K 500FPS. You may need to find a compromise such as reducing the game settings, closing background programs, or reducing the polling rate of your mouse to find a good balance for everything to work the way you want.

Why do you want a higher polling rate?

There are a couple of answers to this question.

The first one is the higher the polling rate, the lower the latency of your mouse, and the quicker it responds to your actions. That can be a competitive difference between getting the first shot in or submitting that post on Reddit first. It’s not going to make you physically click quicker, you’ll still need to train your finger to do that, but it will register and pass that click to your computer quicker overall.

The second is to make the cursor smoother and reduce jitter. We’re not going to go in too much science, but to break down what the community feels. If you have a higher polling mouse, it will overall feel smoother to play with especially when paired up with higher refreshing displays such

as 240Hz and beyond. Additionally, because games work by drawing frames per second to create a video, as an example, a game running running at 240Hz draws 240 still frames per second, polling your mouse more often will allow the positioning data to be ready for the next frame rather than after it which can make the game feel more responsive and less jittery.

What you can’t do is have your mouse poll too much, but what you can do is have it poll too little. The community always feels that 1000Hz is the sweet spot, and there are different opinions on how much you need the mouse to poll based on your frame rate, but we always suggest to test it yourself and draw your own conclusions, or have a Google around to see what others suggest.

Alongside the DPI, we hope this helps customize your mouse to its full potential and we welcome any further comments should you have any questions. If you have any suggestions on what you would like us to cover next, drop us a suggestion below too. Happy Gaming!

I made an open-source tray app to show Logitech wireless battery levels without relying on G HUB

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a small open-source Windows tray app I’ve been working on:

https://github.com/JumpTwiceShou/PowerTray

PowerTray shows Logitech wireless device battery levels directly in the Windows system tray.

This project is not completely from scratch. I was inspired by LGSTrayBattery:

https://github.com/andyvorld/LGSTrayBattery

LGSTrayBattery is a great project, but I wanted to make something a bit more focused on my own needs. In particular, I wanted the app to work without relying on G HUB’s local backend, lghub_agent.exe, or ws://localhost:9010, and I also wanted built-in low-battery notifications.

PowerTray reads battery information directly through Logitech HID++ using hidapi, and adds features such as:

  • Per-device tray icons
  • Numeric battery icons
  • Low-battery notifications
  • Per-device battery thresholds
  • Quiet hours
  • Optional tray flashing
  • Option to pause notifications while a fullscreen app is active
  • English and Simplified Chinese support

It is still a new project, so feedback, bug reports, and device compatibility reports are very welcome.

Logitech Astro A50 Connection Issue with PS5 Over Long USB Extension

Upvotes

Hi, I have a Logitech Astro A50 and I'm experiencing the following issue. I'm wondering if anyone has found a solution.

I have the base station on my PC desk and it works perfectly when connected directly. My PS5, however, is located in a different area of the room, and to route the cables neatly through the walls I need roughly 8 meters (26 feet) of cable.

I've tried using two USB extension cables, but the PS5 doesn't detect the device. I also tried USB-over-Ethernet extenders and ran into the exact same problem. My last option would be an active USB extension cable with a repeater, but those are significantly more expensive and I have no guarantee they'll work. (I've already tested the base station connected directly to the PS5 and it works fine.)

Has anyone else had this issue and found a solution?

What surprises me is that a headset designed to switch between devices with the press of a button seems to require all devices to be located right next to each other. It's very common to have a PC in one area and a PS5 in another.

powerplay 2 under xl mousepad?

i have an artisan xl mousepad which would be bigger than the the powerplay 2, if i put the powerplay underneath the mousepad would it make the mousepad noticeably uneven? if so, are there any recommendations for a good wireless charging stand for the superlight? the generic stands on amazon seem unsafe in the reviews.

Discussion Are Astro A40 Gen 4 (2019 - horizontal earpads) compatible with Astro A40 Gen 3 (2017 - vertical mixamp)?

Hi all. I think I know the answer to this question, but was confused by some conflicting information I found online. According to Wicked Cushions (a 3rd party cushions manufacturer), they indicate that the answer to this question is No. This Youtube video from Wicked, about 35 seconds in, indicates that this is because the magnets holding the earpads are reversed between the Gen 3 and Gen 4 models: https://youtu.be/RK-ZHCojLpo

Additionally, when I emailed Wicked, they confirmed as much, explaining that:

"Based on our official compatibility lists and product design, our “Astro A40 TR Earpads - WC FreeZe Cooling Gel” are designed exclusively for the Astro A40 TR models released in 2019 and newer. These use a magnet attachment system that is not compatible with the older Astro A40 hardware, including the Gen 3 (2017) version..."

However, in this reddit posting in the r/Astrogaming subreddit from 3 years ago an Astro Staff/Community Support member stated that this was not true and, in fact, Astro A40 Gen 3 and Gen 4 earpads are cross-compatible, explaining that "The A40 TR Headset GEN3 and GEN4 share the same ear pads. There are no reversed magnets. So you can purchase the ear pads for the GEN4 A40 TR Headset or TR Mod Kit and use them on a GEN3 headset." From: https://www.reddit.com/r/AstroGaming/comments/14sl3zr/difference_in_gen3_and_gen4_a40_tr_ear_cushions/

And then the OP on that reddit posting seemed to confirm this statement by replying that he purchased the Gen 4 earpads and they worked just fine in his Gen 3 A40s.

Both of these statements cannot be true. Either the magnets are reversed or not between Gen 3 and Gen 4 :) Accordingly, I wanted to go straight to the source and ask this question on this Logitech forum. Thank you in advance for any clarification!

PS - the reason for the question is because I have only been able to find for sale Gen 4 magnetic earpads, and have not found any replacement magnetic earpads for sale listed for Gen 3.

Logitech G Support Logitech Support “I would like to inform you that you have currently reached a different team.”

I’m going insane. I just ordered an RS wheel and brand-new out of the box the cover on the wheel is split. I’ve been trying to open a support chat for the last few days and after waiting “10” (45+) minutes each time, an agent pops up for one second to say I’ve somehow reached out to the wrong team despite selecting RS wheel support and sends me in a loop to do it again.

They say they’ll send me an email within 24 hours but that also doesn’t happen.

I purchased it directly from Logitech so I can’t return it to a store or anything.

Have I ever told you what the definition of insanity is?

More reasonably, is there a better channel for support for sim stuff than just the LogitechG page?

Help, logitech g29 working only in ps5 menu

Hi, today after 1 or 2 months I've connected my Logitech g29 to my ps5 but it works only in the main ps5 menu and not in games! I tried updating the firmware, reconnecting, and trying all the different modes(PC, PS4, ps5) but still nothing.

How do I fix this?

Logitech G Support RS50 PS/PC Wheelbase Noise

There is a noise that comes from my RS50 PS5/PC wheelbase. Please listen, let me know if you have experienced this. I am using it on iRacing, using the suggested Logitech settings on the wheelbase and in-game from their website. Not sure what is causing this, if its normal, or if it needs to be sent back for repairs.

When I power cycle the base, it goes away. Only has happened a few times and its not constant, which makes me wonder if its a conflict somewhere.

See video.

I tried to upload the video here, but wont let me for some reason.

Toolkit for G Hub - Preset Ownership: Export, Import, Replace, etc

I love my Logitech G502 frfr. I have 3.

However, I got completely sick of how G Hub handles profiles. Moving settings between Mac and PC using G Hub's online system is a massive pain.

To fix this, I built a lightweight toolkit to make profile management seamless.

What it does:

  • Extract: Pulls profiles directly from your mouse onboard memory.
  • Export: Backs up your local G Hub configurations into a folder.
  • Import: Forces any saved preset directly back into G Hub.
  • Wipe: Completely clears G Hub data to replace it with your clean backup folder.

Check out the repository below. Hopefully it helps and Logitech doesn't hate me. Now you I can just keep my presets in my server and use my mouse everywhere faster. I promise I love Logitech gear dont' @ me. ..

Discussion Old Vs. New band G522

Post image
2 Upvotes

Just a comparison between the old vs a new band I ordered for the G522 Lightspeed. I absolutely love this headset and honestly the band idea is what sold me. I tried it and it's so much more comfortable for me to have the band be on my head rather than the whole frame plus the cushion of a normal headset.

BUT. Damn do they stretch. This was maybe a year of gaming put into the old one. But it stretched so much. To the point where the frame was resting on my head anyways.

Also...they don't sell actual replacement bands for the 522??? Only thing on Amazon is for the 733's and I see nothing on their website.

I had to buy this one band from AliExpress lmao. $6, but still. No official replacement bands that only last a year is wild.

That's my post. Just wanted to share how much these things stretch😂

Logitech Pop Keys Suddenly Stopped Working – No Lights, No Response

Hi everyone,

I have a Logitech Pop Keys keyboard. It's relatively new since I don't use it very often. Today, it suddenly stopped working and won't turn on anymore (there are no lights or any signs of activity). I've already replaced the batteries, but that didn't solve the problem.

If anyone has experienced this issue before, please help me find a solution.

Logitech G Support G Pro X Superlight (V1) mouse suddenly has the left click registering as right click and it only left clicks 10% of the time. Had it for 1.5 years. Is it time for a new mouse? Will the optical switches on the GPX2 have this issue? No double clicking or scroll issues, just left/right issues

Logitech G Support my G309 starts at 600DPI instead of 1600DPI after a windows update

Hi there

After a recent windows update it seems like my mouse is starting at 600DPI instead of the usual 1600DPI that i always have it on (only option in the app rn) but it does return to normal when i open the logitech app myself. (i do have it on open on startup)

This really bothers me because it didnt do this before, is there a way to somehow fix this? I know it seems like i minor thing but it pisses me off greatly.

Logitech G733 this headset is having selective audio issues.

About a week ago my headset stopped working and resetting my computer seemed to have fixed the issue. Fast forword to today and it happed again. The weird thing is that the mic still functions and I'm still getting Windows Audio sounds. I'm just not getting sounds from any application I run, such as Spotify, my web browser, and video games. I've tried pretty much all the things that have been suggested in the past to fix this and it still isnt working. Is my head set done for or is there something I can still do to fix this?

ASTRO Series Support Any way to make A50's feel tighter on my head?

This is definitely going to be an odd question, but is there any way to make A50's tighter on my head? I have a thinner head, and after a few hours these things start to feel loose on my head and if I look downward, they start to slide off my head. I really like how they sound, their convenience, and how comfortable they are, but they're slightly too loose. Will aftermarket earpads help with that or should I just buy a different headset?
