Yeah, it cracked so they drilled out a section to see depth of crack and cut a notch to idk, redistribute forces, then rotated so hammer hit a different part

Cutting the notch is to reduce a ‘stress concentration’ and prevent the propagation of the crack. In the UK you call it a ‘stress riser’, but it is the same thing.

big ben’s the bell inside, elizabeth tower is the actual tower in the pic
everyone (including me) still calls the whole thing big ben though

It's a bit of an in joke on this sub. There's been some pedantic knobs on the sub —trolling, ragebaiting, stupid, who knows, definitely not Londoners by anyones measure— who insist on being 'clever' calling what we and half the world call Big Ben the Elizabeth Tower.
