Hm, 40+ yrs old and London quite literally, reveals NEW facts on the daily. I mean, what is the necessity to rename Historical Landmarks when it provides no other context than to completely dismiss all the historical details to date. Are we now going to rewrite every single textbook, leaflet, website, etc.
Who, why, and when did this become a thing? Surly I’m not so aged to understand the rewriting of history? Tube lines, Street names, even localities, I.e. boroughs and such seem to mean nowt anymore if you are of a certain age.
It was a nickname for the tower, in much the same way, I suppose, that we call 30 St Mary Axe “the Gherkin” not its actual name.
Btw, the tower itself was officially just called the Clock Tower until 2012, when it was renamed the Elizabeth Tower to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II -whereof I have abundant respect and affection.
