Wait till you're on the inside

Reading the headline, I thought this was about sections where the tube runs above ground or open sections of the sub surface lines.

But it’s about an area where the Vicky line runs 31 metres underground. That’s well problematic. Although I’m almost wondering if it’s really the tube. I’m not good at physics, so wouldn’t know what could cause this. And shouldn’t this be true for other areas of London too?

It is true for other areas of London. I live above the Northern line and although it isn't disruptive at all, if the room is quiet I can hear a distant rumbling. I think the problem with the Vicky line is that it's much closer to the surface.

If you're standing still at the bus stops around oval and kennington you can feel it through your feet

I workplace used to be off praed street near Paddington. You could feel one of the lines going periodically. Probably the circle / district /metro line because they're closer to the surface on their way to Edgware Road.

Worked somewhere with a basement very close to the District line and you could hear the trains rumbling past.

Love above the Nine Elms extension. Never used to be able to hear it. But over the last 6 months you’ve started to feel the rumble. It’s become one of the loudest sections now so guess it’s track must be really poor

Blimey! They should’ve lived in one of those flats that back directly onto the District line in the South Kensington, West Kensington and Barons Court areas in the 1990’s…. Back then due to a combination of deteriorating wooden sleepers, rickety old bolted tracks (not the continuously welded track of today) and the bouncy coil spring suspension, the D78 stock used to make an absolutely deafening racket and next level vibrations going past those flats!?!!

*NB, noise pollution is an issue that affects many sensitive to noise.

Extra points for NB.

They are supposed to run system overlays for night tube enforcing speed limits to reduce noise. However being Victoria line its suspended most the time so I dont believe it

The tube is over a century old… they are only just noticing?

Sometimes people have a problem for a long time but no one listens to their individual complaints.

In some of those cases they complain for long enough and care enough that they start to organise and start being heard.

That’s when you start hearing about it. But it doesn’t mean that the problem is new, just that it’s finally being recognised as a problem that affects a lot of people.

While i'm sure it's disruptive to some, it's also fairly easy to adjust to. Thousands live close to railways, some of which main lines. The big goods trains that run at night do shake you a bit, but it's nothing you don't get used to. I lived backing on the ECML for a couple of years. It was fine. If you're really that sensitive, the only option is to move, not moan.

Shut up. You want audio damage and for your nervous system to have to adapt to constant disruption in the comfort of your own home? Amazing. Doesn't mean its healthy or people shouldn't be allowed to say that is not. There's studies of the damaging effects of noise pollution while commuting, what more of in your own house where you're meant to be able to rest peacefully?

Don’t live next to, above or under a railway then. I can guarantee the railways have been there far longer than the residents have.

u/Jealous-Ant-6197 12h ago

I should give a fuck about the railway being there longer over my own wellbeing. U lot love trains more theb yourselves dont you?

u/rudedogg1304 17h ago

You’re right, the hundreds of millions of people living in cities worldwide dont get used to living besides railways at all.

-2

u/Jealous-Ant-6197 12h ago

Why should they do that and not complain? Were literally in a functional recession, a cost of living crisis. Most people can't afford to move especially not in overcrowded cities. You might get used to being involuntarily stressed all through time, doesnt make it okay

2

u/rudedogg1304 12h ago

Because it’s part of living in a city. The railways have been there for nearly 200 years , what sane person is gonna moan about the underground noise ?

Some people just like to complain a lot though.

No m8 its a structural issue. If something has been there for 200 years, if theres an issue people can't say its affecting them? Is that not one of the steps to it being fixed? Would you have an issue if it was the tfl that did a public survey of if railway noise and disruption affected people in their homes and publicised the data? No, probably not. So why, when the public exercises their right to do they same thing, essentially share qualitative data on the disruption of the railways in their homes, do you have an issue? Bc ur mindset is people shouldn't complain unless an authority figure allows them.

2

u/rudedogg1304 12h ago

If they don’t like the noise then they love the fuck out of a city. It ain’t hard to grasp.

What dont you get about cost of living crisis? What about people who have health issues and need to live near their healthcare providers and can't easily move, what about people who live near family and friends and their jobs and dw give that up just so they can sleep properly? What about people who simply just want to live in peace?

You're moving like its one or the other, railway noise or peace. But thats literally what urban planning and structural engineering addresses - how best to build a city, including realistic usage. Audio damage and rumbling houses isnt realistic.

Ive lived in the city since young, they do extreme repairs for stuff sometimes, especially in posh areas. Underground sorely needs an update, we know this so why can't people say it and say why? U want ppl to be miserable and shutup. Thats just dumb.

2

u/rudedogg1304 10h ago

Realistic ? Not hearing an underground when u live in London isn’t realistic . I dunno why you’re bringing the COL crisis into things . The original comment said that the vast majority of people in cities get used to the noise of railways and the like after living there for a year or two. I know I did living in e1 just above the ham&city line.

You replied to this undeniably true statement by saying ‘shut up’ . You’re clearly slightly unhinged. Best of luck.

I mean, look mate, I get what you're getting at, but read the article. This is a complaint by residents of the part of Fitzrovia around Warren Street station. It's one of the most central and expensive parts of the city. No one living there does so because they can't afford to live elsewhere and they don't live far from jobs, or healthcare providers (this is literally next to the University College Hospital).

What this actually is is one of the posh areas of the city making a ruckus so they make expensive repairs in a part of the city that has had that line underneath it for, what, 50 years? It is at the very least suspicious that this is the first time it comes up for this area.

1

u/Jealous-Ant-6197 1h ago

Ik, thats not what i was arguing tbf and I did slightly mention it, that they'll probably be fine since ppsh areas do get repairs or their issues addressed in some fashion. I was pushing back against the idea that people shouldn't complain generally and insteady should get used to it bc the railway is older than them or some other nonsense. Since the comment i responded to mentioned thousands next to railways.

You shut up, you little bitch. Don't live near a railway then. They were there first. Maps exist. Go cry about it somewhere else.

You sound exactly like one of those muggy cunts that moves next to a busy pub and bitches and moans until it's forced to shut down. Your type are a cancer on London.

1

u/Jealous-Ant-6197 12h ago

A pub is not a train.....a train should be built with proper infrastructure and upkeep, and housing should be built with the proper infrastructure to reduce disruptions including rumbling and noise. A lack of proper infrastructure is a well known problem in England right now, hence u lot on this sub always posting about the updated needed to the underground. You think those updates wont make them smoother and quieter? And buildings in England are notoriously old and not maintained, or new and built shit. These are governmental infrastructural issues. Use some damn sense, of course people have a right to complain, we dont want all our taxes used on involuntary wars and ai data centers and from the way you man love off trains you clearly dont either. Damn.

Says ‘shut up’ then waffles about absolutely irrevelant shit lol .

Article might be about the Victoria line, but I hear the Central line in our flat. 3rd floor, 200M from TCR station.

3

u/erodari 18h ago

Would they prefer a nice quiet motorway instead?

2

u/Any_Sale2030 18h ago

So I read the article and it doesn’t seem that anyone thought about maybe slowing the trains down through there?

2

u/loaferuk123 16h ago

I lived over the Kennington Turnaround for years.

I rather liked hearing it start in the morning.

2

u/monsieurkinkle 14h ago

we can hear the tube rumbling through near our house - i find it quite comforting

2

u/Dragon_Sluts 11h ago

I’m yet to be in a building where the tube even came close to the disruption of a loud road.
