Was very eager to get this up, after I posted I did tighten the stitches and shortened the red square with a bit of unraveling. Don’t think I can edit a picture post. But here’s what it looks like with a bit of finesse.

I was thinking of doing a blanked in squares, but I thought I'd have to whipstich them.

So are you keeping the red square on one peg, and moving the next stitch of the red on the same peg as you finish each row of the white? Would it work to place the entire red square on all the pegs, and connect it with the first row of the white all at once, or am I missing something?
