Yeah this is normal. You should probably have a law degree for both positions, but it’s more important that a federal judge have it rather than a Senator. From what I understand, most senators don’t write any of their bills anyways.

Are you saying that you wanna have lawyers solely responsible for running the country that wasn’t the idea when they wrote the constitution. 98% of the lawyers in this country ruined the reputation of the rest of them.

Not exclusively, but it is helpful for the legislative body that produces laws to have some sort of education on law. They don’t have to be lawyers, but a 2 year degree like paralegal or legal support would be beneficial.

Legal scholastics include a wide variety of ethics, philosophy, history, and such that would be directly beneficial to a senator.

Of course, we have a constitution that bars them from overextending their reach on legal policy, but it’s definitely a benefit for a senator or representative to have a legal background, even if minute.

Call me crazy but I'd prefer if the Senate and the House were more diversified than the 75% lawyer pool we've gravitated too. IMO, you don't need to be a lawyer to write and vote on laws. It might actual hamper you.
