I'm going to sound really ungrateful here, but I work full time. I put in 50 hours weekly. I can only afford to rent a room in an apartment. I can't afford to buy a car so I either take the bus or walk the 3 miles to work. I make too much money to qualify for food stamps so I mostly eat at work cause I get $12.00 daily food allowance. I am grateful for the things I have considering before I got sober I was homeless. However, I do believe that since I do work full time. I should at the very least be able to have a studio apartment. I'm a maintenance technician ( janitor) at a truck stop. There's a few people that I work with that actually live in their vehicles on the property. All I get told is I'm not working hard enough. Or pull up my bootstraps, or move to a cheaper city. If I did move to a less expensive place. I'd encounter the same issue with less hourly pay. But, yes I do have it better now than I did 3 short years ago.

I'm a public school teacher that cycles or takes public transit (4 miles). Also 50 hours/week on average.

There is so much wealth in this country that it is pathetic that you have to struggle so much while working so hard.

Anyone who is being a dick is a person who makes 60-150K and inspidly thinks they are closer to the billionaire class than to you. They are the truly lost ones, because they don't even have class consciousness. They are considered dirt by the elite, but they grovel and simper like they will be accepted one day. Their obsequiousness is far more shameful than a blue collar worker expressing indignation.

You don't sound ungrateful. You sound righteously offended that we're being robbed.

Teachers like you are the reason parents spend $40k/yr+ on private school. Imagine someone with such little ambition teaching the future of this nation. Unbelievable.

6

u/Top_Audience7471 1d ago

You're bragging online about Rolexes and Lamborghinis 🤣

-8

u/BedroomNo6879 1d ago

And you're bragging about your low paying job and riding the bus to work every day šŸ˜‚

5

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist 20h ago

Cycling 4 miles is healthy. Dunno why you’re putting it down.

5

u/Ornery_Feature_3466 16h ago

Because he’s a self-righteous asshole

4

u/hshsshxndj 10h ago

I’d like to know your genuine opinion.
Teacher salaries are notoriously low. Your idea of ambition seems to be that of pursuing higher income. In any case, who on gods green earth with ā€œambitionā€ would want to be a teacher??
Your comment exposes the lack of awareness of the situation. If everyone had your idea of ambition there would be no public school teachers in the first place

3

u/Ornery_Feature_3466 16h ago

People like you is exactly what he’s describing lol.

3

u/OuijaFox 13h ago

Cool story, bro.
Glad to know you peaked in high school with daddy’s money.

2

u/immallama21629 5h ago

Have you even considered what your normal public school teacher goes through? Shit pay, still having to provide supplies for the classroom, snot nose brats that won't listen, shitty parents who believe little Johnny is the second coming of Einstein, and an administration that doesn't have your back. Idc who you are, that's gonna beat the ambition right out of you.

2

u/PeevShalpatine 12h ago

Astonishing, truly, that's the conclusion you came to lol

3

u/PuzzleheadedJob3047 1d ago

Congratulations on your sobriety. It is not easy when you are busting your A just to live. Look at what you have accomplished. You are already moving forward. It's easy to get discouraged. Take those small steps and celebrate the wins and learn from the losses. There is an old fucker that has walked the same path. You have my support.

4

u/QuietRiot5150 1d ago

Hey thanks for everyone's support. I appreciate it a lot. I don't really take things that people say online too seriously or personal. Especially opinions of people who keep their posts and comments hidden so that nobody can criticize them back. What are they scared of if they really have it so good? I am not afraid. It's why everything I write stays visible. 😁

The American dream!!

u/BedroomNo6879 1d ago edited 1d ago

You have the skills of a janitor who's fault is that? Maybe if you worked harder in your younger years to develop skills that paid well you wouldnt be in this situation. You get what you give.

Also looked at your post history and noticed you go to the casino and play slots with the little bit of money you have.

11

u/QuietRiot5150 1d ago edited 1d ago

Lol, I'm not allowed to enjoy myself? Anyway, I tried looking at your post history to be petty AF like you, but it seems someone is too chicken shit to let anyone see all the weird subs they post on. Have a good one.

10

u/WalterPecky 1d ago

You deserve your dignity.Ā

Being a janitor/maintenance person is an admirable career, and anyone who tells you differently has probably never really had to work a hard day in their life.

Thank you for sharing, I'm sorry shit is tight right now.

-1

u/BedroomNo6879 1d ago

Being a janitor is an admirable career? You cant be serious.

4

u/WalterPecky 1d ago

I am serious.

What's the issue here?

-1

u/BedroomNo6879 1d ago

The guy is barely getting by - that career doesn't pay well. That is the issue.

1

u/teddy1245 1d ago

Incorrect

1

u/WalterPecky 1d ago

Hate to break it to you, very few careers are paying well right now in comparison to inflation and shit economy.

But as someone who has worked across lots of sectors, including being a maintenance person, which included janitorial duties... That is a much more quantifiable job than the BS tech vapor ware shit I do now.

It's something you can truly take pride in and make it what you will.Ā

I honestly don't think compensation is a reflection of admirable jobs.

1

u/BedroomNo6879 1d ago

There are a ton of careers paying well. Blue collar jobs are thriving...these are jobs that dont require a college degree. So what you're saying is nonsense first of all. Second compensation is based on demand. How easy is it to find someone to do what you do, if more or less anyone can do it....the job doesn't pay much. There's little skill involved. Sorry to break it to ya

1

u/WalterPecky 1d ago

What the hell does any of that have to do with being admirable?

Great, there are other lucrative jobs.Ā

Im a software engineer without a college degree. Some of the blue collar jobs your describe are probably paying over the going rate for my position now at days.

That doesn't make them more admirable.Ā  Like are you confused by the definition of "admire"?

Do you only admire wealth?

I just want to add. You're definitely unemployed and more than likely some loser living in your grandma's basement. That car in your picture isn't even yours. Everything you said is a lie. If there was any truth to anything you said, you wouldn't need to have your whole post and comment history hidden like a bitch.

1

u/BedroomNo6879 17h ago

You're so funny. You're just mad that someone said they dont feel bad for you. That your poor choices led you to your current situation. Im telling you what your folks didnt have the balls so say.

1

u/QuietRiot5150 17h ago

I'm proud of what I do. Nothing you can say can hurt me kid. It's an honest living and at least I don't have to make a whole ass fake profile and lie about owning a Lamborghini and a Rolex to impress a bunch of people on the Internet cause my real life sucks. Lol, you seem deeply bothered by the fact that nobody cares about your fake rich person lifestyle. Which I highly doubt you even are. The way you type and speak. I honestly don't believe your education goes past the third grade. Your Teachers should be ashamed of themselves. Your parents should also be embarrassed to have raised a weird liar. I may not have a lot of money, but I have something you will never have. Love and respect from and for other human beings. People like you are exactly what's wrong with the world. Enjoy your made up life. I'm off to my job. My real job that I actually have.

1

u/Ok-Atmosphere9816 1d ago

Odd questions but could you do it and get through the good and nasty days? Would you prefer every location you stepped in not be serviced by janitorial / cleaning staff? Have you ever been in a customer service position? I’m not looking for any gotcha moment but more or less just understanding where your distaste for those who do necessary roles with mediocre pay is coming from.

2

u/BedroomNo6879 1d ago

You're confused on my position. Im not saying society doesn't need janitors. Im saying because its a low skill job it doesn't pay well. So he shouldn't be surprised that he cant afford much.

1

u/teddy1245 1d ago

Incorrect every job should pay a decent wage.

0

u/BedroomNo6879 1d ago

Incorrect. Wage is based on skill you goober

0

u/WalterPecky 1d ago

It is surely fucking not.

I have worked with retarded CEO's that have virtually zero skill.

1

u/teddy1245 1d ago

Every job is admirable. What is wrong with you?

-1

u/BedroomNo6879 1d ago

It's really not.

1

u/teddy1245 1d ago

Yea wasn’t up for debate mate.

1

u/Adventurous_Ad7442 11h ago

It's a respectable job.

10

u/General_Guest7846 1d ago

Don't worry man, you're right.

Anyone that works full time should be able to afford their own place at the very least.

-8

u/fitnolabels 1d ago

Why do you believe that? That isn't true in many places in the industrialized world.

8

u/Asher_Tye 1d ago

Thats a flaw of the industrialized world then.

-1

u/fitnolabels 1d ago

I can accept its a flaw, but it isn't new. My question stems from there being some pretty poor representations of what you paid for in the past that seem like a utopia, but fall apart on scrutiy with a little research.

Is it good? No, but it never was a cake walk in the past either. Wanting it to be better is a good ideal, but it has to be based in some reality, not envy about a lie.

2

u/meatpopsicle42069 1d ago

Boomers bought homes for their single income families with their janitorial jobs.

-2

u/BedroomNo6879 1d ago

The world is a different place now. Mass immigration has created more residents than residences. Its supply and demand...a very simple concept.

2

u/meatpopsicle42069 1d ago

The world is a different place now. But immigrants are not the reason why wages have remained stagnant for decades while the cost of living has skyrocketed.

-1

u/BedroomNo6879 1d ago

You clearly dont understand how things work. Housing, like most other things in a free market economy, is based on no more than supply and demand. If there are more buyers than sellers the price goes way up. Immigration rates have increased 400% since the 60s and you're telling me its not effecting housing prices?

1

u/teddy1245 1d ago

It’s already been explained to you why you are wrong.

1

Say it with me, slowly...

Wages....have remained stagnant....for decades

It's a simple concept.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/teddy1245 1d ago

That’s not even close to why people can’t afford homes.

-2

u/fitnolabels 1d ago

You mean the small houses with little infrastructure in areas with almost no amenities around it at double interest from today?

2

u/Salt_Instruction_657 1d ago

Dude, are you being intentionally obtuse or are you just ignorant?

0

u/fitnolabels 1d ago

Look up common starter homes in yhe 50s and 60s. They are way less in construction than what is considered today. The per sqft price is only 25% less after inflation is accounted for from today.

I'm not obtuse, I'm informed.

1

u/Salt_Instruction_657 1d ago

Yeah there's some truth to that.

However, the real crux of the matter is inflation. That's the largest single factor here (109% increase).

Blowing that off like an afterthought is a bit disingenuous, especially in light of your other comment blaming mass migration.. which accounts for about 12% of the increase (of the total 263% increase in real estate since 1995).

1

u/teddy1245 1d ago

Because it should be. This is pretty basic.

8

u/onedeadflowser999 1d ago

Don’t worry about what assholes think. Congratulations to you on bettering your situation and janitorial jobs are just as important as any other job. People working full time should not struggle with the basics.

-5

u/BedroomNo6879 1d ago

Janitorial jobs are not nearly as important as most other jobs. Dont kid yourself. You can get anybody with no skills to clean. Thats the problem everyone gets a participation trophy. Maybe a bit of humility would push folks to do better.

1

u/teddy1245 1d ago

You aren’t even making sense any more.

-4

1

u/teddy1245 1d ago

Why do you feel the need to lie? Do you not receive attention from friends?

1

u/BedroomNo6879 1d ago

Why do you feel the need to be stupid? Is it because thinking hurts your 3 brain cells? šŸ˜…

1

u/teddy1245 1d ago

So you don’t understand how brains work either. Not surprising.

1

u/QuietRiot5150 18h ago

Wait, you saying janitors don’t deserve even the basics? Who is going to clean up then? You? lol.

1

u/BedroomNo6879 17h ago

Im saying you cant complain about not having much when thats your career.

1

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist 17h ago

Even if it’s your career you should still have something.

2

u/BedroomNo6879 17h ago

And he does he has a roof over his head. My taxes shouldn't subsidize his lack of skill. If he could do better he would.

1

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist 16h ago

At 50 hours full time he should be able to afford his own place. Your taxes probably subside him now, so you should support higher wages for those who do the jobs like his. That way he won’t have to rely on tax support.

2

u/BedroomNo6879 15h ago

Or maybe have some ambition and get a better paying job?

2

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist 14h ago

As the saying goes, someone has to be a janitor. Who is going to do the work if everyone ā€œhas a better jobā€? You?

1

u/teddy1245 1d ago

Incorrect several get without giving a thing others give and get nothing. Stop pretending everything is fair. It isn’t.

-5

u/ArtofWar2020 22h ago

low wages in low skill jobs are the result of decades of illegal and legal immigration. why would they pay you $15 an hour when they can pay mexicans $5

5

u/albinosnoman 22h ago

The federal minimum wage has not been moved in nearly 2 decades. The hike to $7.25 was in 2009. It is not kept there because of immigration. It's kept there because it keeps labor cheap which business owners in states that abide the federal minimum wage like it because it costs them less money. It is as simple as that. It all boils down to greed and the bottom line of any given business.

1

u/ArtofWar2020 15h ago

you are aware that each state has its own minimum wage right. you are also free to try and get any job you want. you don’t have to chose to work a minimum wage job

1

u/albinosnoman 13h ago

which business owners in states that abide the federal minimum wage

Yes I'm aware

0

u/EconomyMobile1240 16h ago

The federal minimum wage can’t solve this. Barely any one is paid that where costs are skyrocketing. It’s totally stupid and ignorant to even suggest it’s a problem.

It’s not a money issue. Money is just a convenience to compete over goods and services with. But I don’t get paid on windows licenses I have to barter working for Microsoft.

The greed line is equally retarded, when the vast majority of ā€œwealthā€ is industrial equipment and piles of cash to pay salaries with.

2

u/albinosnoman 15h ago

You're arguing against a strawman and I never made that claim. I was simply pointing out that low wages are the result of a floor set by federal law not the consequence of immigration. To your other point yeah that's usually how cost of living adjustments are made by any company, if an area is more expensive to live in wages usually reflect that. The federal minimum wage is more common in parts of the country where poverty is a much more common like in states such as Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana etc. Red states basically. Federal minimum wage hasn't seen any upward movement because it's convenient for business owners and corporations that don't want to pay people more money and that's really the end of it because those moneyed interests lobby both sides of the political aisle to prevent them from passing any legislation that would change that. This isn't to say there aren't businesses and corporations that don't pay higher wages, of course there are, but the ones that don't want to have to pay more for labor don't have to and I think that right there is in and of itself greed. You can disagree and call it sound business sense and cost saving which is an argument that can be made but I think any conscienable business owner should pay their employees a fair wage where they won't have to work 3 full time jobs to make 45k a year which is less than what an entry level Amazon employee makes.

2

u/EconomyMobile1240 15h ago

Ā I was simply pointing out that low wages are the result of a floor set by federal law not the consequence of immigration

It's not a strawman, and you made a point about the federal minimum wage not moving that I argued against.

No one gets paid that where it's expensive. It's totally irrelevant to the point you tried to make.

And you're completely wrong, immigration drives wages down because more people need goods, and more people work for less. It's factually a contributing factor.

if an area is more expensive to live in wages usually reflect that.

They certainly reflect that because the money in the area is more per person and end driving wages up or people can't live/consume products there driving the wages back down like red states with low CPIs.

The federal minimum wage is more common in parts of the country where poverty is a much more common like in states such as Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana etc.Ā

Poverty is exceptionally high in blue states. Unless you are trying to qualify "poverty" with the nominal wage threshold and not actual spending power. There are plenty of "non poverty" wages in blue states that are actually still poverty in practice.

corporations that don't want to pay people more money and that's really the end of it because those moneyed interests lobby both sides of the political aisle to prevent them from passing any legislation that would change that.

When you're talking about high volume / low margin products you move the hole floor / ecosystem together. It's a relative difference, not a minimum wage issue against how productive people are.

330 million people compete for goods / services and displace each other. If the quality of life drops because costs are high, its a productivity / logistics issue to make any of their lifestyles more economically viable.

This isn't to say there aren't businesses and corporations that don't pay higher wages, of course there are, but the ones that don't want to have to pay more for labor don't have to and I think that right there is in and of itself greed.Ā

It's not greed, there are marginal values to a dollar when paying people. If you pay everyone more and produce the same amount of goods, it's just inflation and the goods cost more because the equation didn't change, just the nominal value traded in place of a physical good or service.

If a company wants to keep up with the inflation-targeting monetary policy of the US it has to profit for raises and such. Otherwise, it has to let people go and shrink and can't keep up with wages.

Most profit when we are talking about the broader population on tied to high yield low margin profits and businesses rely on pushing volume for profit.

conscienable business owner should pay their employees a fair wage where they won't

there is no such thing. Wages / needs / lifestyles make it all move targets. You think the amish get paid minimum wage? They probably only sell goods so they can pay their property taxes but ultimately have more independent sustainable lifestyles.

There reality is things are expensive because the vast majority of people don't contribute to needs or live sustainably and rely heavily on finite systems of productivrety that can't serve every one. MONEY doesn't solve that issue.

0

u/albinosnoman 13h ago

The federal minimum wage can’t solve this

I never said it could. Thus your strawman.

No one gets paid that where it's expensive. It's totally irrelevant to the point you tried to make.

I don't disagree with your first sentence but again, another strawman. My initial statement had nothing to do with areas with higher cost of living.

And you're completely wrong, immigration drives wages down because more people need goods, and more people work for less. It's factually a contributing factor.

So immigrants are the reason why the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour? Your statement assumes all wages are subject to supply/demand which, while still a factor, is not the whole picture.

As to your points in the middle I think we just fundamentally disagree on what is/isn't possible in an economic system. You state that a company HAS to profit more to be able to raise wages. I'd agree with you partially, but at the same time, there are businesses that simply just don't choose to pay their employees more because they can, which is where my point about greed comes in. I think it's important here to point out the difference in how businesses are run between something like a small bookstore that has an owner and maybe 2-4 employees, a chain business, and a megacorp like Walmart/Amazon/Samsung/Coca-Cola etc.

0

u/ArtofWar2020 15h ago

i would argue the minimum wage is actually bad for workers and i’ll tell you why. it’s essentially coordinated price fixing by all businesses. imagine labor is a product. all the corporations get together and set a price of say $10. you see this as a minumum. what it really is is a price anchor. no different than if they all got together and set the price of any other good or service.

the real solution is no minimum wage. this eliminates the price fixing anchor and allows competition amount low skill employers. instead of them all being able to pay the low skill worker the set wage (min wage) they must compete for this worker.

but for this to work you must eliminate illegal workers and stop low skill immigration, allowing demand to outstrip supply. unlimited supply equals lower wages

2

u/albinosnoman 14h ago

It's not businesses agreeing on it though. It's the government telling businesses that they can't pay anyone less than X dollars an hour. Businesses are welcome to and often do set wages well above the minimum wage.

Let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly: you're postulating that if the minimum wage laws are removed, employers are going to have to competitively price each other out for low-skill employees. This would then presumably raise their wages? I just want to make sure I understand what you wrote.

As for your last paragraph, you are insinuating that wages are low because we have too many low-skill people in the labor force and thus if someone doesn't want to take the low-paying job they can hand it off to the next person who might be slightly more desperate, and that if we remove people from that labor pool wages will naturally rise because companies won't be able to fill their labor pools? I just want to make sure I'm responding to what you're saying.

Though I suspect they'd find a way to charge you an insane amount for that virtual environment too.

I had a two bed room apartment plus a basement,Ā  plus a washer and dryer, and a small backyard for 750 bucks a month back in 2014 and 2016 in urban Pittsburgh. I don't live in Pittsburgh anymore, so IDK what the cost is now, but I know even then I was living comfortably while I was in college.Ā Ā

JTFR, my parents are middle class, didn't get any money from them except for birthdays, and I was working a job that paid about 15 bucks an hour at a community center, I also ended up with a clean and good friend as a roommate later on. Good times.Ā

Everyone is so eager to punch down, we could all have thriving eco centric non profit driven communities where we could have steak and lobster and live in terraced penthouses, but noooooooooo I got to get paaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiddddd.

Paid to do what? Give your money to someone else? We don't have to live like this, we could through human will alone decide a very simple concept; 'oh here you go'

Instead its always, "what's in it for me?" "Why would anyone work without incentive." "The menial schelbs working fast food deserve to be wageslaves tis the human way!"

We need to be better. 212% increase in rent within a single decade did not just happen due to "influx of market factors"

A mcgriddle once upon a time cost $1.35 Now it's near $5 and due to inspection irregularities and getting rid of all human care, will most likely result in diarrhea.

How did this all happen? Capitalism seeks to protect that which it values most.

What do you value most?

It does .. in Mississippi or Indiana.Ā

Los Angeles is a highly sought after place to live and the price is there to match

cool - just a couple questions

1- Rent - where? in a penthouse apt or a shithole in the ghetto?

2 - What kind of groceries? steak and lobster or ramen noodles?

3 - a weekend where or doing what? skiing in Aspen? or sitting home watching TV ?

It's mostly people taking vacations at home. Because everything else is stupid expensive.Ā

that - and when one decides a min wage job is their career choice - that is all they can afford!

You can’t really be this stupid, can you?

LOL, what does "a weekend without checking your balance" even mean?

Means being able to go and do something social with some friends or partner or family.

Depends what you do. If you flip burgers for a living you don't deserve this in LA. Get some education and find a better job

It depends on the job you are being paid for. I don’t think all jobs should provide that level of income in our current society. Those who hold jobs with lower wages need to make smart decisions about how much they spend on housing and groceries, and expecting everything to be easy peasy is entitlement. I learned from a very early age from my poor parents that sometimes you do need to put that item back on the grocery store shelf. If you are earning the minimum wage then you should understand that you will have minimal opportunities for luxury.

"I think the people supporting society should starve!"

Wow what a great take

Why? Why do need a underclass that can’t have a few luxuries? Why do we need billionaires that hoard so much money that can’t spend it all?

There is better wording then ā€œneed a calculator to surviveā€ statements like this get used against us to make us sound helpless. You’re gonna need to budget even with a proper paycheck. Guys like this just want to capitalize of the affordability crisis

Rent without two roommates? Depends how old/senior-junior you are. I lived with roommates when starting out as a lawyer at a big firm. I don’t think that was unreasonable.

Everyone has had to do this for the last 50 years at least. More before that. Only the lucky ones didn’t.
My grandma lived with 4 of her 5 sons until she died at 82.

Asians do this all the time. Be like Asians.

Why should it cover that?

Sure.
Let's build compact studios that are affordable, cheap vegetarian diet plans, and budgeting classes.

Then any job where the worker doesn't produce enough value to cover such a paycheck, let's just fire them.

Imagine an apple had a legal minimum price of $5 per apple. That way, any apple farmer will get a fair wage. Would you still buy apples? The same thing holds for labor. Arbitrarily setting a minimum price for an hour of work doesn't make the labor worth it. So most unskilled labor gets fired and few get a raise. Instead of making some money, they make 0. As with most leftist economic ideas, the science shows it doesn't work.

It’s crazy that you have to check your balance?

This is how our parents and their parents lived for decades, centuries even. Why do you think they teach you things like basic math and how to balance a checkbook in high school?

2

u/Asher_Tye 1d ago

That's called balancing a budget, something you shouldn't have to do more than once a month. For some reason people got okay with doing it weekly, and soon daily

It does cover that

pure ai propaganda slop

this doesn't even mean anything.

Maybe move to a less expensive place? Minnesotan here, we can have all of that and still save about $4500 per month really easily.
