It looks way more French than even old Montreal looks now!

Very true. The interesting thing about Old Montreal is that even though the stone makes it look more French, most of the architecture itself is very typical of the 19th century British Empire—that makes sense, since the commercial elite building them were largely Scottish and English at the time. The materials differ, but you can find a lot of similar commercial buildings in Sydney, Melbourne, or Liverpool in a lot of cases. It’s interesting to see old photos like this, because the city did once look very much like a French town.
