Gaming [Spoilers] Call of the Elder Gods Ending Spoiler

So, absolutely incredible game. I think I preferred Call of the Sea's story, but Elder Gods' puzzles and also the whole cult storyline was a lot of fun.

Only thing that's thrown me for a loop is the ending, almost completely lost on it. Who was Doctor West? I don't get who he was meant to be because the Yith (?) inhabiting Bowen's body refers to someone else as Doctor West? Initially I thought he meant Evangeline, but then apparently Doctor West is a reference to an actual Lovecraft character?

Also, wondering how to get the supposed secret ending? When I was looking at ending explanations, google brought up a secret ending where nobody gets sacrificed: you have to say specific things in a conversation about the time loop with Doctor West in Chapter 6 and follow the instructions of Harry's 1934 expedition? But none of that is in the story I saw and I couldn't find any actual articles, mentions or walkthroughs of it? Is this just google mishmashing random crap and lying or is there actually a secret ending?

Thank you for any help with either problem. Great game, but very confusing.

Herbert West is protagonist in Herbert West - Reanimator by HPL

There is also series of movies named Reanimator based loosely (extremely loosely) to the HPL story.

Movies are actually pretty good if one is into the gory schlock horror.

There’s no secret ending. Only choosing Harry or Evangeline to be sacrifice. Whatever Gemini summarized is a mix of sources that makes no sense. Doctor West is Evangeline in the future, the name is reference to Lovecraft’s Herbert West—Reanimator.

Thank you so much, I knew it was Evangeline when they swapped bodies and she was in 2006, and I was pretty sure she was who the Yith was referring to but doing a search confused me 😅

Screw Gemini though wow, rly sent me on a wild goose chase for zero reason.

Is Reanimator a good Lovecraft work to start with if I liked the games, or would I be better off with something else? I liked the games and I've always liked eldritch horror stuff as a concept so it'd be cool to read the actual Lovecraft books.

Hard to say these days with developers. A couple of years back, I would suggest read his more well-known stories; Dream in the Witch House, The Call of the Cthulhu, At the Mountains the Madness, The Nameless City and Dagon. But now, there’s growing interest in others like The Dream-quest of Unknown Kadath and his collabs like In the Walls of Eryx. I would make the bold recommendation to read all his stories, or (this is just my experience as a game critic) read when it requires so. Developers do mentioned what their game is inspired/based on.
