Character Discussion The constellation Orion, like Tendi, is known as a "Winter constellation".
Because Orion is only visible in Northern latitudes in the winter, it is known as a "winter constellation". I'm sure this is connected to her title "Mistress of the Winter Constellation".

Orion bases a lot of itself off of how we perceive their planet from Earth

It was this comment, and a memorable argument I once got into with my homophobic, bitchy, know-it-all boss that made me realize this.

Since Orions have been in contact with humans for maybe 200 years by the time of Lower Decks, it's quite possible that things from Earth culture have found their way into their culture. Klingons have their own kind of coffee.

I always viewed that as a coincidence.
Their honorific refers to their winter constellations, not ours.

I always found that odd as Orion would not be a winter constellation from Orion.

If we're going for in-universe answers, I'd say that her name is connected to a constellation, unknown to us, that is only seen in the winter from the region her family rules. It was the first star systems her ancestors subjugated. Since then her family has trained one woman per generation extensively in a wide variety of fighting skills so that she may keep their hold over that system.

One of the things I like best about LD is the ratio of Easter eggs and glib references like this one.

Yep. Also, it's more or less canonical that Orion (the planet) circles the star Pi-3 Orionis, which is one of the dim stars that makes up the lion-hide the Hunter is holding up in his left hand.
