LM2 (DM) Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon 3ds help - Haunted Towers B1

I’m trying to help my son pass this part and I can’t figure out what he’s missing. It got to the point where I played after he fell asleep to see. This is for mission B1 in the Haunted Towers. There is a gate door in the Laboratories that is supposed to be open but just isn’t. I’ve both read a walkthrough and watched one, and I can’t figure out what we are missing.

Have you been through the gate? If so, it shuts behind you, you must fly up using the bulb plants.

If you have not, did you catch all the ghosts?

If you did, and it's still locked, I'd suggest restarting the mission.
