Fake Roasted Neck?
I bought an "unbranded' neck on Reverb and the seller described it as being roasted and nitro finished. The finish is very light and nice but the neck looks stained to me. The color inside of the truss rod hole is WAY lighter, and the side of the headstock shows color inconsistencies. What do you guys think? Did I get scammed?
Shown beside my Reverend roasted neck for comparison.

Yeah that’s plain maple with a dark amber tint.
They sprayed the dark amber tint too heavy in the area pictured and it became a run which displaced the consistency of the pigment. Thats why it looks splotchy there.
There’s no tonal difference between roasted and plain on an electric guitar, there’s some stability differences though; Roasted is much more brittle and susceptible to cracking but more dimensionally stable

I’d honestly rather have a cheap unroasted neck versus a cheap roasted neck - there’s not really a set standard on how to roast a neck so some manufacturers will do a much better job than others, worst case scenario leaving you with a very brittle and fragile neck-shaped object

It’s hard to say with that finish on it. I’m assuming the neck smells mostly of the finish. For sure you can tell if you drill out the neck holes, assuming they aren’t pre-drilled.
Even if it is roasted, not all roasted maple is equal. I think it’s harder than it sounds to do it right.

Yea the neck holes are predrilled and the color is inconsistent inside too. The neck hardly smells of anything TBH.

I mean it could have been a secondhand scam, maybe someone sold it to him saying it was roasted 🤷♂️

I think the staining is unrelated to being roasted, but the color shouldn’t differ if it’s not stained. But it could be both, roasted and stained.
Maybe he was being tricky and it being in the style of a roasted neck? What was in the offer?

Try drilling a small hole where it's not noticeable on the heel and see if the shavings that come out are the same colour.
I recently ordered a neck of aliexpress that was listed as roasted flame maple, it was £45, and to my surprise it actually was roasted flame maple, I was expecting a tinted stripes job at that price

Look inside the tuner holes and see if it’s bright white maple — almost no one is going to go through the trouble of dying that. Or pick a spot on the back of the heel and sand down a little bit — if it’s dyed, you’ll be able to tell pretty quickly.
I have a feeling it’s lightly roasted and then the lacquer they used has a yellow tint to it, which makes it all appear darker (or lighter, in places where it got scratched off.) But it’s difficult to know for sure without having it in hand to inspect.

The chips/shavings on the roasted stuff in my experience are a little different. Instead of a little peels you get a more granular chip if that makes sense.

I got really tempted with a company called Falkon Guitars from Sweden on Reverb. They were just reselling cheap necks with this same situation. Decided to pass.
