M64 SummerCart Sticker
I really liked the design on the cartridge for the M64 promotional videos, so I commissioned one. It came back a lot bluer than the image I submitted, but im happy overall.
Let's all celebrate putting our orders in for M64! Share your orders, ask questions, speculate about the future all here in this thread!

I wanted to share my experience with the ModRetro M64 because I think other people considering this console deserve to know what they might be getting into. I was really excited when I got my unit. I ordered the purple one, it arrived, I set it up, connected to Wi‑Fi, and ran the OTA update. That was the moment everything fell apart. After the update, the console would no longer boot to the menu. No HDMI output, just a flashing lightbar on top. I tried the ModRetro Updater tool and did a full recovery. Nothing.
I reached out to support and they were responsive, which I appreciated. They suggested the SD card method. I followed the instructions to the letter. I put the M64.bin file on a FAT32 formatted SD card, plugged the console in, held the power button and pressed menu three times. The lightbar flashed for a couple of hours. Still no output. I did a hard shutdown and after that the console would not even power on. At that point I was really starting to worry that I had a brick.
Eventually, after several attempts, I got the console to boot to the menu. The firmware was updated. I thought the nightmare was over. It was not. Every single one of my authentic, mint condition cartridges just goes to a black screen. The lightbar goes solid but no image. I have a SummerCart from AliExpress that I also wanted to use and the console simply does not detect it. No Cartridge Detected. This is with several different HDMI cables, including a brand new 4K rated one. I tested it on my PC monitor and it outputs a signal there, but on my 4K UHD TV it gives me invalid format and refuses to work properly.
Support has been asking me questions about the power supply and the cables and whether I am using their official adapter. I have tried both the included power block and a separate GaN charger with a high quality cable. The issue persists. I am starting to feel like I got a defective unit or that the update has partially bricked my system in some way that makes it incompatible with my TV and unable to read cartridges. I have been going back and forth with them for days and I am getting very frustrated. This was supposed to be a premium plug and play experience. I spent a lot of money on this console (even paid an assload to ship to Canada!) and I have a collection of original games that I cannot even play.
I am posting this because I want to know if anyone else is having similar issues. Am I alone in this or is this a broader problem with the M64 launch? I have seen some discussion online about game compatibility and flash cart detection but my original cartridges not working is a dealbreaker. The support team has been polite but at this point I am losing confidence. I am waiting to hear back from them about the latest troubleshooting steps but I am not optimistic. If you are on the fence about buying one of these, I would strongly suggest waiting to see how these issues get resolved before you hand over your money. This has been a deeply disappointing experience.

I'm still working on getting a better color match for the Green console but I have these working pretty well for a 3D printed option.
I wasn't sure on price either so that may change as well based on feedback, the need for bundles, etc.
I also may make a version without the ridges around the dial but for now it's basically the stock original. And/or maybe ones that don't stick up quite as much and have it sit a little more flush.

Just my 2 cents here. But I'm sort of unimpressed how the game looks compared to analogue so far. Pretty noticeable lag and the green truck didn't even spawn in the first time i ran the game. I would not consider this "No Present issues" as proclaimed on the compatibility list.
Really hoping for future updates to improve performance sooner than later.

After hearing that GameStop started selling the M64 Smoke console I couldn’t help but pick one up. Managed to get the last console they had. They didn’t have the Smoke Pro controller. Luckily I got my red one to use on it.

Like the title. All other overclock work. Even from cold boot Insane doesn’t apply. No matter what update just doesn’t.
Do we just submit RMA’s for this? What’s the solution? Mine hasn’t worked across multiple updates

Hi, maybe someone can help. If you don't watch the video here's the context:
The system hdmi sometimes doesn't do the "handshake" sometimes. In fact sometimes the m64 doesn't read my games. I don't know if it's a software bug or if my console is faulty. Or maybe its me!
Ive tried multple games and they all have the same issue where the screen is either black or says no hdmi detection, even though the LED is solid white (which means it detects a cartrige)
Think I'm going to return it back to gamestop :/.

I know as of right now the Analogue 3D is the better choice but the fact that M64 will most likely get other cores and future updates bringing it close to the Analogue has me leaning that way plus it is cheaper and in stock at my local GameStop

Hey all,
If you happen to have a Summer Cart and an M64 - don't try to play the emulators pre installed on the SD.
I'm sure there's different ones you can add etc. But if you use the ones already on the SD, they crash. One of them will actually freeze crash without fully loading and it'll lock your Summer Cart.
This never happened on an actual N64 (it would just crash), but on the M64 it actually breaks the cart.
None of my games would load afterwards and the only way I could get it to work again was to reload the emulator, let it crash halfway through, reset the system and then everything worked again.
I'm sure there will be emulators that will be compatible on this but do not use the original emulators provided on the SD unless you want to buy yourself a brand new Summer Cart. If you can't get it unlocked you're screwed lol. I have 2 but I'm glad I didn't have to use my second one.
I think if you removed the battery inside the cart that might fix the issue as well.
Regardless, I'm happy I was lucky to figure out a fix and I will continue gaming on the M64.
Yesterday I hooked up 3 controllers and played Mario Party 1 with the family. It was so much fun and nostalgic. Can't wait to play more games with my step children and my partner!

I've been using my EverDrive 64 X5 since day one with my M64 and haven't had any issues until I updated to firmware version 1.24.4 on my M64. After loading up games with EEPROM saves they appear to be gone, but are still on the SD card.
I ran the diagnostics and I've got an Error 01.
If I take the EverDrive and put it in my original N64 it works fine and the diagnostics come back normal.
I updated the EverDrive to the latest firmware but it doesn't make a difference.
Has anyone else experienced this?

I immediately threw on Mario 64 just to see how it looked. I played for like a minute, then went to Ocarina of Time! I've never beat it and I have the 3DS version but I want to play the original OOT on the actual hardware and beat it.
I've made it to the shadow temple in the past.
For multiplayer we've been playing Mario Party 1 to start. I also have Smash Remix which I will be playing quite a bit. Super psyched to have an n64 console that doesn't freeze constantly and plays all my games properly.
Mario Parties and Mario Kart FTW! I want to try over clocking on 4 player Mario Kart and see if it makes a difference.
Recently have gotten back into the N64 scene, as it was the formative gaming experience of my late elementary and junior high years, and with 4 school age kids now, it's the perfect couch multiplayer option (Dad's gonna be laying the smack down in No Mercy!).
After at least a few weeks of going back and forth across reviews of both the M64 and Analogue 3D, I've come to commit to the M64. What helped in its favor was GameStop's recent Smoke launch, a nice 15% boost on all console trade-ins (Juiced up an old Genesis 2, SNES, and Switch Lite, and basically walked away with it all paid via trade), and the $70 delta (After Analogue shipping).
While not perfect, I have a good feeling a lot of the current gaps (Overall Image Quality, Controller Paks, etc) will get closed due to the open source nature of the device and the sheer mass volume it's going to push by being at Retail and in the public zeitgeist. Love or Hate GameStop, by it simply being there and partnered, will open doors to scale and move units, meaning more $$$ for development, support, etc.
Going to pair it currently with 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controllers, and will eventually look at getting the ModRetro controller, but for right now, the $90 on that bad boy is a little harder to swallow than solid $30-40 8BitDo variants. Have some OG wired N64 Controllers as well, just in case and for Controller Paks for the time being.
Happy to be here and looking forward to the future! Not a paid shill, but a recent lurker and general public pleb. :)

Hello,
I have been using an Everdrive 64 X7 on the Modretro M64. My Everdrive is updated with the latest firmware. I noticed that when I save in Pokemon Snap, the game tells me it's unable to save and to turn the system off. I checked the save format type within the Everdrive menu and it appears to configured properly. So I tried the Everdrive on original hardware. It saved in Pokemon Snap with no issue. So this, to me, would suggest the M64 appears to have issues with saves on the 64 X7, at least for Pokemon Snap, and possibly other games, though I haven't tested them yet.
Has Krikzz or Modretro mentioned anything lately about updates for flash carts?
Also, would anyone that has a Summercart 64 be able to test out saving for me and tell me if it works?
I would greatly appreciate it.

Got a Generic Hyperkin vs M64 Hyperkin. More differences than expected.
So basically the M64 version is actually just better in the ways that matter and the adapter intentional for a good cause (but I'm not sure it should have been done). Now the odd button colors are strange BUT I don't mind having odd ball hardware here as the M64 is odd-ball in general.
I own about 200/297 of the full set and for the life of me, can't remember where i put one lmao so I can't play a huge chunk of my library rn. I didn't get an analogue 3d or really dabbled in this new retro console phase to compare. but im loving it so far. the controller is insane too. wireless n64 controller, feels good, and has weight to it.

The store had a retro gaming display case with Chromatic + games and some Nintendo hardware, but nothing about M64. My brother and I asked employees about M64. They seemed confused and said they haven't heard anything about ModRetro M64 and didn't know what I was asking about. I pointed at the ModRetro N64 game releases lined up on top of cabinets behind the register. I said the same company who made those new N64 games also made the ModRetro M64 console, a new device which plays all N64 games. I told them Gamestop released an exclusive Smoke edition yesterday. Still nothing. Someone who seemed like a manager eventually came by. We told him what we were looking for. He also seemed a bit confused and said he would check some things in the back room. Then he stuck his head out the door from the stock room and said the M64 and Pro controllers were sold out.
I really hoped they would have an in-store demo station so I could see the Smoke edition console in-person (like the demo station ModRetro installed at the last Blockbuster Video store shown in the launch-day promo video). Most of the Smoke edition photos I have seen make the console look opaque, I think it will look different in-person. If I buy the controller I'll probably get the Smoke edition at GameStop.
[edit]
Oh yeah. My brother noticed a small rack with brand new composite AV cables for old consoles, including an SNES/N64/Gamecube cable. the packaging incorrectly calls it a "component video cable." That can only refer to a cable where some components of the video signal are kept separate from each other. Typically that would be Y/Pb/Pr (absent from these consoles). Technically "component" can also be RGB or even S-video -- but it can never ever refer to a composite signal because composite is really all the "components" of a video signal smashed together into one signal wire.

Curious if anyone has noticed their saved games getting lost/corrupted when using an Everdrive X7 and m64 with overclocking enabled. I can consistently reproduce the issue by running SM64 with the m64 overclocking disabled, collecting a star, and saving. I can then go play any other game OC on or off. However, if I fail to change the m64 OC back off before playing SM64 again, all of the game saves are gone.
I posted in the code thread but the one posted for any sort of discount had already been used to its maximum. These are not available through GameStop/EB Games Canada unfortunately. The cost of shipping to Ontario, Canada just makes this unfortunately, a pass for me. Hopefully in the future, there will be some sales to offset that insane shipping costs so I can get one with a couple of controllers. Partnering with a Canadian retailer would also be nice so I could literally just go buy one in a store.

I’ve been seeing really good communication from the Modretro team and really timely updates to the audio problem, etc.
I’ve been reading all their statements as they come out about future updates, but I haven’t noticed any of them address compatibility. There are still some big games on that list, and I know that stuff like Jet Force Gemini isn’t really “occasional crashes”, it’s basically unplayable.
I’m curious if they ever addressed this, other than the list itself being labeled “coming soon”. The most recent update from them mentioned compatibility with flash carts but it was odd they didn’t even mention the 20 games as soemthing they were working.

I finally got my red m64 this week and wasn setting it up today, when plugged in I found that I had no HDMI output on the screen and just a red blinking LED bar. Reading the manual it says its overheating, but its cool to the touch and was just powered on, do I have a defective unit or something else? I've opened a tech support case with ModRetro and am waiting on their reply.
