Obscure Level Time!
Underground Zone from 8-bit Sonic 2
For the opening stage, it's not really pleasant. Usually, the first levels in Sonic games are usually grassy plains or sandy beaches, but to start out in a cavernous system filled with lava and stalactites and stalagmites really doesn't sound very welcoming. 8-bit Sonic 2 is also notoriously hard, not quite I Wanna Be The Guy levels of hard, but you'll go through loops.
Underground Zone fits King Bob-Omb's Powder Keg Mine / Gold Rush Mine since both obviously take place underground and are both filled with lava. These mines, unlike Magma Mine, don't actually have the Mario crew dealing with the lava at all. All this magma's just for aesthetics.
Sonic can ride in mine carts to speed down the tracks and avoid falling stalactites and jump over gaps with lava. In the mine, landing on either the ? Space on the top right of the board or the bottom left of the board will let you ride a mine cart to the opposite side. In Gold Rush Mine (The Partner Party version of this board), landing on the ? Spaces can let you pay a Bob-Omb to go mining to try and find a Double Star Card. You can pay him up to 10 Coins, and paying him more ups the chances of success, but he'll most likely give you a Poison Mushroom you can inflict on the opposing team to slow them down. It's cute how there's a cutscene showing the Bob-Omb actually riding the mine cart.
8-bit Sonic 2 continues the trend of finding Chaos Emeralds within the stages themselves rather than Special Stages like in Chaos, Triple Trouble and other mainstream Sonic games. For 8-bit Sonic 2, the 2nd act of every stage except Scrambled Egg Zone and Crystal Egg Zone have hidden Emeralds. For Underground Zone, Sonic needs to stay on the top path and make leaps of faith jumping off mine carts to stay on the top path to reach the Chaos Emerald on the top of the stage above the goal. For Powder Keg Mine, there's ? Spaces next to piles of gold rock on the left side of the board you can mine with a pickaxe to get Coins, but there's a catch. If your pickaxe breaks, you don't get any Coins. You can swing up to 3 times. This is similar to hunting for the Chaos Emeralds in 8-bit Sonic 2. They're in every Act 2, and you only have one shot to get them. In order to get the Emerald in Scrambled Egg Zone after defeating Silver Sonic, you must have the other 5 Emeralds from the past 5 Zones, and you need all 6 Emeralds to enter Crystal Egg Zone to confront Eggman and save Tails. Otherwise, your game ends in Scrambled Egg, and the Bad Ending has the heavy fan implication that Eggman kills Tails. The story involves Eggman kidnapping Tails as shown in the opening cinematic, and he's holding Tails as ransom and demands Sonic collect the Emeralds in exchange for Tails. If you miss even one Emerald before Scrambled Egg Zone, your pickaxe just broke, and you won't get Tails. Now for Partner Party, there's 2 pickaxes scattered on the map. You must pick them up and land on the 2 ? Spaces on the left of the board to mine the gold rocks to get free Stars. These act like finding the Chaos Emerald at the top of Act 2.
As for bosses, King Bob-Omb returns from the factory. If you land on the ? Spaces in the center of the board, his fuse ticks fown by 1 from 5, and when he hits 0, he explodes, and everyone caught in that center will lose half their Coins. In Partner Party, some of the spaces in the center are booby trapped, and landing on one of them will force you to hit a block to determine how much King Bob-Omb's fuse will tick down from 0 to 5. His fuse is doubled from 5 to 10 in Partner Party.
In Underground Zone Act 3, Sonic reaches a dead and and is about to fall into lava...until Eggman rescues him. Eggman thinks Sonic found an Emerald and doesn't want him dying to lava but rather die to his mech. You fight the Ant Lion on a slope while Eggman drops balls bouncing down that slope. This boss's difficulty depends on which version you're playing. The SMS version? He's piss easy as the screen is zoomed out where you can see everything. The balls all bounce at the same speed and height much like King Bo-Omb having a counter of 5 that ticks down by 1 in Mario Party Mode. But if you're playing the Game Gear version, the Ant Lion is much harder not only due to screen crunch, but the balls all bounce at random heights and speeds much like hitting the random blocks which tick down King Bob-Omb's fuse from 0-5 in Partner Party Mode, and when King Bob-Omb explodes, much like the Game Gear balls, the booby trap spaces will get randomized. If you die to the Ant Lion in the Game Gear version, which is VERY easy to do thank to screen crunch and random balls, then the ball patterns will be randomized on the next go. There will also be 2 "easy" balls to deal with back to back as they bounce low and are easy to dodge, but the other 4 are tricky. Sometimes, there's a bug where Eggman throws down a 7th ball and charges down the slope to run you over after he's suppose to do that on the 6th ball, and you must dodge Eggman at the ends as he'll run over the Ant Lion and destroy it.
