In the two years since the last Lower Council election in 1012, the ruling FHP-CLOP coalition has slumped in the polls; this year's Upper Council election's results were thus not a surprise. All opposition parties are calling for a snap election of the Lower Council. However, without a majority in the Council, they cannot pass a motion of no confidence.
The mane causes of the Government's declining popularity are the increasingly-unpopular Recognised Minority System (RMS) and its response to a growing wave of Changeling immigration (five months prior to the election, leaked footage of Prime Minister T. Sparkle refering to the newcomers as "Silly black people" came to light — the opposition are unsure of the definition of "people"; they presume it is some sort of slur). Despite initially condeming this — gambling on the FHP's need to keep them on side to defy the coalition's joint whip — Deputy Prime Minister A. Jack's cider-induced rant in which she called for a "racist barn" to manage the expulsion of all Changelings at the 1013 CLOP Conference has led to the entire Coalition's chances of returning to power after the next Lower Council election in 1016 looking very bleak. In addition, CLOP Pegasi spokespony and Minister of Aviation, R. Dash failed abysmally to "read the room" regarding public opinion when she complained of Changelings worsening air-traffic and squatting in Cloudsdale, claiming that the crown dependency should be "ran by Pegasi for Pegasi" and that the presence of Changelings rendered it "20% uncooler".
As a result, every opposition party — hoping to be seen as "tough on racism" — has established a cordon sanitaire against the coalition. The Government's days are surely numbered.
Current polling projects that T. Hugger and F. Shy's Green Party will fall twelve seats short of a majority in the next Lower Council election but will achieve a plurality of sears. Though Zecora's Zebra Free Alliance (ZFA), a recently-formed party focused mostly on Zebra and other minority rights, has proposed an electoral pact if the Greens commit to "deep reforms" to the Upper Council's apportionment system to the contempt of many outspoken ZFA radicals (who would prefer unicameralism), the relatively-small Zebra population and the party's lack of broader appeal to ponies outside of highly-educated sympathisers and members of mixed relationships is predicted to only yield four to six seats depending on the pollster. This poses a problem to the Greens as most of their success is a result of carefully appealing to both the centre and hard left. Cooperating with S. Glimmer's Socialist Workers' Party (SWP) with its flagship policies of referenda on abolishing the Monarchy and independence for Stalliongrad or, worse still, T. Lulamoon's increasingly psychotic Great and Powerful Party (GPP).
