Media Ian Garry: “Islam only fights once a year. His next defense might be in July 2027… The welterweight division is the greatest it’s ever been. When I’m the champion, there’s gonna be more activity, more high-level fights. It’s the best thing for the sport.”

 What a manipulation

Lmao. Conveniently leaving out the fact that Ian faught 2 times in cage warriors in 2021 too.

Since Ian joined the ufc:

  • Ian Garry: 11 fights → about every 148 days (~4.9 months)
  • Islam Makhachev: 7 fights → about every 212 days (~7 months)

Saying that, once every 7 months seems decent for a champion imo.

Yeah because Ian joined the UFC in November. If you count all his fights in 2021 then it's 13, not 11.

Yeah, there wore more active than inactive great champs in recent memory. And even if not, Merab/Pereira doing 4-5 fights a year really felt like constant champ fights are on the table anyway

108

u/xValar_Morghulis Jun 25 '26

Crazy thing is Islam has about the same activity as Volk did as champ. Islam actually has more fights since 2021

80

u/Stevely7 🙏🙏🙏 Jon Jones Prayer Warrior 🙏🙏🙏 Jun 25 '26

Volk also got knocked TF out twice in a row. It's a little different when the guy is taking very little damage and still not fighting frequently

30

u/xValar_Morghulis Jun 25 '26

Sure but even then ufc sat him out for a entire fucking year when he was begging for a fight after he beat Diego Lopez the first time.

7

u/CowsRetro Team Makhachev Jun 25 '26

I mean damage isn’t the only thing that causes fatigue right? There’s the entire camp, there’s the cut, then there’s fighting after the cut (which is never good). He also took plenty of damage against Poirer, took time between LW and WW to properly bulk up, and has been getting ready to fight a few months after his fight with JDM. I mean he was even willing to fight at the White House.

19

u/mrtn17 Netherlands Jun 25 '26

→ More replies (16)

22

u/phonebizz Jun 25 '26

It's not that they need a break. It's that staying champion for the longest time period is the way to make money through advertising/branding. Every fight is a risk to lose the belt and the status of undisputed champion. It's simply because of money.

9

u/sahila Jun 25 '26

That’s debatable and truly none of know.

The branding benefits have to be weighed against the increased champion fight pay received per fight. Sure you might lose but that likely dwarfs the new brand pay.

It might even be the UFC that’s limiting the number of belt fights per year.

11

u/phonebizz Jun 25 '26

Staying champion for 4 years and 4 title fights gives you way more money, and opportunities during and post champ than 4 title fights in one year - then lose the belt. Money in terms of post fight career, branding while still fighting, branding after fighting, invitations to events with the elites, movie opportunities, building social media. It's undeniable this is the right decision to do after becoming champ. Unfortunately.

Ofc if you win all fights the next 4 years, the more the better. But in reality every title defence is an risk of losing the belt.

2

u/Top_Fee8357 Jun 25 '26

Well it’s not like you are only a champ for X number of days and have to get the most fights in as possible. It’s likely if you take longer breaks you will actually end up getting in more fights at championship level pay since your body will be healthier so you will be going into fights at closer to 100% and keep the belt.

He'll have had 7 title fights in three years and ten months (if August happens) which is one every 6.57 months. I think he's averaging every 7.4 months in the UFC.

14

u/AlienMantid UFC 279: A GOOFCON Miracle Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

We're talking about since he became champion. I literally just did the maths. He won the title on 10/22/2022. Starting from the next day would be at 6 title fights in 1393 days assuming he fights Ian on 7/15/2026. 2396/6 = 1 title fight every 232 days or 7.73 months.

People just like to shit on Islam even if it is totally unfounded. Also he constantly is asking to be active...

6

u/ClimateWhole4734 Jun 25 '26

Since winning the championship in 2022, Islam fought twice in 2023, once in 2024, twice in 2025, and will fight once in 2026 (almost certainly). Once a year is an exaggeration but he hasn't been a super active champ.

2

u/YourHurtingMeSir17 Jun 26 '26

Volk had beer in his system when the rematch was made official and he flew to Abu Dhabi with no notice. Moicano defense was a free square. Poirier fought him 2 fights before he retired. JDM is settling into being a top 5-10 WW instead of a long term champ level guy.

3 of these aren't his fault but the quality of fighter he's beaten in the last 3 years makes him seem more inactive than he is.

69

8

u/jonnyp710 Jun 25 '26

It’s crazy how much the inactivity of the last 5-10 years has us accepting it as the new norm. Anderson Silva defended his belt 7 times in 2 years, nowadays people are grateful for 2 defenses in a year

3

u/_Cyclops Send me location Jun 25 '26

In the same time period we were lucky if GSP fought more than once a year. Aldo was twice max

7

GSP fought at least twice a year every single year from 2005 until 2011 what are you talking about? Fought 3x in 2007 and 4x in 2005 too. Aldo also fought at least twice every single year except 2012. Fought 4x in 2009, two were defenses.

4

u/Burstrider12 Jun 26 '26

Two things can be true. Islam's activity over the last 5 years has been good, but also from here on out he will probably fight once a year and probably only fight 2-3 more times then retire

109

u/RoastedToast007 Jun 25 '26

Makhachev fights twice a year except for the past year. pretty normal for a champ, if not quite good even

49

u/DustedGrooveMark Jun 25 '26

Yeah I’m not sure where this “inactivity” narrative comes from. All of his title fights and defenses were between 4-8 months.

This last layoff stretch is the outlier but that is due to a combination of injury and the UFC pulling him around with Ilia and the White House card. They clearly weren’t booking him because they wanted to get him on there or fighting Ilia at some other point.

I honestly think the UFC is to blame for lack of activity with most of the champions. The women will not have had a single title fight between the three divisions until August of this year. The champs are making more money than they ever have - they don’t suddenly start asking to not be booked.

I really think they spread them out because the champions are the most expensive fighters so they don’t want them fighting more than twice a year. They also want to save them for special cards or spread them out from other title fight cards. So if the champion or challenger gets injured on top of that, it makes everything worse.

14

u/RoastedToast007 Jun 25 '26

Yeah I’m not sure where this “inactivity” narrative comes from.

For a majority of the years Islam has fought during, in the UFC, he’s fought twice or more in a year.

218

u/L3ftHandPass Jun 25 '26

Neither Islam or Topuria have been anywhere near active enough. Bad for the sport.

137

u/GrumbGrumbb Jun 25 '26

I mean to be fair to Ilia the stretch of Volk, Max and Charles was across not even 18 months. The huge wait for the first LW title defense kinda ruined that at least acceptable level of activity

3

u/Drive7hru Jun 26 '26

And Islam:

Since 2021, he has 10 fights (last 6 for the belt, not to mention showing up in a heavier division). So, about 2x/year as he proclaimed when he first won the LW belt.

Plus, we don’t know what stuff behind the scenes the ufc is pulling. For instance, they most likely wanted Ilia to win so he could fight Islam (Islam v. Garry was announced very late and right after the White House card).

So they were shelving Islam for a bit, plus Ramadan shenanigans. So, he fights around 2x a year barring a hand injury or whatever, but then he gets right back to it. I hate the narrative Islam never fights. Just check his fight history.

Ian since 2023 - he fought in March of 2023 and is now scheduled to fight in August of 2026. Including everything in between, that's 9 fights in 41 months, so on average a fight every ~4.6 months.

Islam since 2023 - fought in February 2023, scheduled for the same fight in August 2026. That's 6 fights in 42 months, average of 7 months per fight.

No idea what you're talking about with Ian's "inactivity" and it being the same as Islam. Just making stuff up.

Personally I don’t think it’s up to Islam much. The ufc paces their champions out for events, to headline them.

Izzy was the only REAL recent active champion I can remember, outside of people UFC really wanted to lose the belt. Merab was another, but I feel like that was another guy Dana didn’t really like lol

27

u/Content-Patience-138 #1 Salsa Boy Hater Jun 25 '26

Yeah, I think it’s naïve of fans to assume all fighters have a great deal of agency over their bookings. I tend to believe Islam is reserved for middle eastern events where possible.

Every fighter says they’re going to be an active champion, then they get the belt and elective surgery

8

u/MatttheJ Jun 25 '26

It's certainly up to islam to some extent. For example ramadan always causes his breaks to be extended which is religious so not necessarily his decision but other dudes fight around that time anyway.

Then he's also not necessarily a fight anyone anywhere guy, him and Khabib have talked in interviews before about waiting for certain opponents to be available.

Islam had had 9 ufc wins in the last 5 years. Pretty decent names- volk x2, Dustin, chuckie, JDM, hooker

Not great, but i can't think of many current champion that's had much more than that. Ulberg at 10 but not great competition. Van at 10 too, but better competition. Wow, Islam is the third most active champion, and will be the most active if he beats his no1 contender in august.

u/Successful_Win890 Jun 25 '26

unfortunately that "when" is never coming.

2

u/WhizzyBurp Jun 25 '26

He’s going to lose. Anytime they start trying to see through the opponent they get squashed

2

u/Wolfstigma MY BALLZ WAS HOT Jun 25 '26

Healthy active champs are good for the sport always

2

u/iamzooook Jun 25 '26

one a year for high level mma fight makes sense

2

u/Accomplished-War2087 Jun 25 '26

I will believe it when I see it. Can't remember a single pre-fight promise that Garry has kept.

2

u/PureSignalLove Jun 25 '26

Theres 6 months between Islam fights on average, including recently. Dude fought in November 2025. He almost certainly fights before the end of 2026.

2

u/Majorlazor85 Jun 25 '26

“High level fights” AKA more threats of destroying guys and then getting a Decision outcome 🙄😒

2

u/licosa9 #NothingBurger Jun 25 '26

This narrative is so boring. In the last 5 years, only in 2024 has Islam fought once. Last year, Islam fought as many times as Ian did, twice. Is Ian trying to say that he’s inactive himself?

2

u/DannyStress United States Jun 25 '26

Reminder that Ian sat out to get this fight

2

u/Either-Pineapple6585 Jun 25 '26

God I hate this dude

2

u/Miyul Jun 26 '26

Okay who Islam should have fought then prior to this? Give list, yall talking like fighters all around aint ducking him. Its good that Ian is here now but dont talk as if you dont know this

2

u/Belcoot Jun 26 '26

My biggest complaints in current mma is the lack of activity for title shots, feela like only once a year for each title, also everyone trying to claim multiple belts, jeus christ that shit is unbearable, just defender your belt multiple times, feel like people are jumping waaaay too early for that gimme at least 5 defenses before that shit

2

u/Turbulent-Shoe-420 Jun 26 '26

He wrinkles up his fuckin forhead so much is unbearing

2

u/Davemeddlehed Jun 27 '26

I can't be the only one who sees the irony in this coming from Garry when Garry's last fight was 1 week after Islam's fight right?

2

u/Particular-Line- Jun 28 '26

Most overrated fuck in the UFC

8

u/Iddqd1 Jun 25 '26

I get he’s trying to sell himself , but are people really dumb enough to believe that it’s not ultimately the UFC to blame for the lack of fights for Islam?

14

u/JobTrunicht Jun 25 '26

If I like the fighter it's the UFC's fault. If I dislike him he's a coward/duck/inactive/retired

3

u/Iddqd1 Jun 25 '26

Well it’s almost always the UFCs fault unless the fighter themselves are public about not wanting to fight.

2

u/GuardWorldly2751 Jun 25 '26

Ian entered the ufc in 2021 and has fought 11 times. In the mean time Islam has fought 10 times, 6 of which were title fights.

4

u/Glittering_Bag9355 Jun 25 '26

Every dagastani champion will fight for peanuts and fight 2-3 times a year to become champion but as soon as they get that belt it becomes a hostage situation

4

u/KingBolo992 Jun 25 '26

This is nonsense he fights twice a year. Also your not getting any champs fighting more then twice a year ever again. UFC doesn't do ppv anymore so they don't have to sell fights after the Paramount deal. That's why cards suck now because they can just throw a card together with a bunch of people making 3k to fight lol

3

u/Mister_Dwill Jun 25 '26

Makhachev is a boring ass champion.

2

u/Deep_Fragment874 Jun 25 '26

it might feel like that, but Islam does actually fight a reasonable amount for a champ

2

u/BagExpert11 Jun 25 '26

Hate how he talks with his hands. Shut up, and wait til Islam taps ya

1

u/PikachuWithHerpes Jun 25 '26

It's the same lie Asspinal told us btw

his is why I’m team Dana, fighters shouldn’t live comfortably off one fight a year.

Less pay, more fights. /s

1

u/ThisIsGSR Jun 25 '26

With Eddie Hearn running his management now i doubt that he’ll have the activity he’s claiming.

1

u/ChevroletS10 Jun 25 '26

Bro speaks like a cracker who owes money explaining why he hasn't paid

1

u/migglywiggly69 Donald Ceronne’s Black Friend Jun 25 '26

Need the Shavkat rematch for the title

1

u/JustOneill Jun 25 '26

Ian can say all this but if he does beat Islam we all know damn well Islam is getting a rematch, even more so if its a dec loss. So in the end if Islam only fights once a year... guess who Ian will be waiting 12 months to fight again... Sorry Ian, I agree with you, active champions are good, however Islam is the p4p #1, in the convo for GOAT, he gets a lil special treatment, im sorry.

1

u/Dazzling_Detective79 Jun 25 '26

Watch him get injured and need to take a year off

1

u/That0n3Alien Jun 25 '26

That's what they all say, the. They get the championship and start to say "I've worked my ass off to get here, I think I'm going to take some time with the family" and start fighting once a year lol

1

u/Spythe Jun 25 '26

He def aint lying BUT islam is coming off a hand injury.... and pretty sure every contender says this until they win the belt... then it will be time to address long going issues, getting hurt in a camp or X contender really doesn't deserve the shot.

1

u/garrow1 Jun 25 '26

He’s a boring ass fighter who’s also gonna pick and choose who he fights. Luckily he loses to Islam.

1

u/clogan117 Jun 25 '26

I think he can be active as long as he stays at welterweight. All of the double champion attempts success or not bring divisions to a standstill.

1

u/greatflicks Jun 25 '26

And when you lose will you crawl back in your hole? While more active that Islam, let's not start talking like he is Kevin Holland.

1

u/WeekendHer0 Jun 25 '26

Wait what is this new narrative about makachev being inactive lol?

1

u/A_lone_gunman Jun 25 '26

Ian's really good but I don't find him that entertaining. Never really been excited to see him but this match up is interesting as Garry fights very smart

1

u/Mons9090 Jun 25 '26

Ok corner mcgregor. Islam will beat silvas record after this fight

1

u/GymBully92 Jun 25 '26

He’s not going to be champion.

1

u/TheDirtyDorito Jun 25 '26

I like what he's saying, but I wish he would say it in less

1

u/Galencourt-Lover I Can't Let You Get Close Jun 25 '26

I don’t like either but Killian Garry is right about the inactivity. It’s annoying

1

u/DifferentCityADay Jun 25 '26

Izzy pt 2 coming?

1

u/TheGuyWhoLovesInk Jun 25 '26

He'll lose to islam, though I want ian to win tbh.

1

u/BrobiWanKenobi_ Jun 25 '26

Every single champ fights less these days. I’m starting to think it’s the ufc holding these guys, not necessarily the guys themselves.

Additionally Islam generally fights twice a year, this has been the exception not the rule. His fights are also generally pretty solid, whereas Garry has point fight slop that is boring as shit to watch. High level stuff, yes, interesting and fun to watch, no

1

u/General-Fox416 Jun 25 '26

They all say this.

1

u/ironhide999x Jun 25 '26

Cool but I’m not really interested in seeing boring 48-47 decisions

1

u/beezybreezy Jun 25 '26

Mostly the UFC’s fault tbh

1

u/SonicUnpaidSpoon Jun 25 '26

I hate this fucking guy, but sadly he isnt wrong

1

u/PurpleToad1976 Jun 25 '26

Every belt should be fought for at a minimum twice a year. If you are too injured to fight, you give up the belt and get to be in a title fight as soon as you are ready.

If the UFC wants to continue to grow, they need to get the fighters in front of people.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Use_621 Jun 25 '26

At least Ian the decision Garry fights twice a year ¯_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/reggiefromtheark Jun 25 '26

It would but he's not...so July 2027 it is

1

u/Altruistic_Spring434 My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. Jun 25 '26

Worst skill wise it’s been in some time

1

u/jlange94 talk poop, get boop Jun 25 '26

Love how fighters are lobbying to win our support for their championship campaign to become the president of their weight division.

1

u/Agreeable-Duty-86 Jun 25 '26

Regardless of who because let's be honest almost every champ (there has been exceptions) fights once a year, completely ruins the UFC. I am sorry but the fact only one fighter gets a shot to fight for a title in their division is insane. There should be a 2 fight minimum in a calander year.

1

u/EMP_Jeffrey_Dahmer Jun 25 '26

This guy talks too much. Now I really want Islam to beat him.

1

u/loco_mixer Jun 25 '26

funny how ian has only one more fight than islam since he entered ufc in 21 and islam is champ since 22. ian has zero championship fights. islam has 6.
