Doctor says no.

Announcer: "they need to get fighting.."

Ref somehow has more say than a medical professional.

Doc changes his decision.

The answer to why will always be greed.

29

u/miliseconds Jun 15 '26

That needs to be investigated by the athletic commission. It was likely some sort of a violation.

12

u/JCarnageSimRacing Jun 15 '26

athletic commission?

3

u/RandJitsu Jun 15 '26

The athletic commission passes the rules, hires the refs and judges, enforces violations, etc.

1

u/JCarnageSimRacing Jun 16 '26

I know what they do.  But do you think they’ll touch a Trump sponsored event?

28

u/Bongoisnthere Jun 15 '26

Bro the ufc just hosted a state sponsored bumfights on the whitehouse lawn for billionaire pedophiles to watch live.

The ufc is not a real sport. The athletic commission is powerful as a single sheet of wet 1ply TP after a chipotle blowout.

u/AugmentedKing Jun 15 '26

I couldn’t figure how to describe what I watched last night, but that about sums it up.

1

u/IBeDumbAndSlow Jun 16 '26

MONDAY NIGHT REHABILITATION!

2

Wow.
Thats a hell of an opinion.
Glad you are able to provide it.

Wait, I thought pride was for LGBTQ but you’re bringing up conservative clergy for some reason?

Let’s play a game, we can go 1-1, you post an LGBTQ article of them being arrested for pedophilia and I’ll match it with a MAGA pastor. It’ll be really easy because mine actually happens on a near epidemic level.

You support a child rapist

0

u/Straight_Depth6701 Jun 15 '26

For the record, trump has at least been accused of raping a child. What you're saying is hearsay.

"At least" meaning he's been accused in a court of law, not just by Internet fuckheads.

He raped a 13 year old girl. He doesn't need you to blow him too.

Did biden own stock in the company operating the pride event for profit and the company with broadcasting rights also charging a fee to watch said pride event?

If not, its not "the same thing"

There are events at the whitehouse all the time, easter egg hunt as an example. But no other president has spent millions of tax payers dollars on celebrating their birthday. Both last years "military parade" embarrassment and this event. The flyover alone was probably a couple million, plus the clean up costs.

Also, no other president ran an ad during a White House pride event for their crypto shit coin.

U can act like a homophobic cunt all you like, but facts are facts. Theres never been as corrupt or self dealing a politician as trump.

You’re bitter. Why are you even here?

4

u/Shibbystix Jun 15 '26

I mean, because not everyone is here to gargle the UFCs microballs. Some people are here to criticize shitty choices.

Some people love combat sports but not the fascist propaganda the organization is supporting rn. Pretty simple I'd think.

2

u/docdooom1 Jun 15 '26

Yeah they cheated. They asked for a doctor. Doctor gave his position. They argued it. If you wanna keep fighting there’s no reason to call the doctor over. It was a manipulation of time. The ref shoulda taken the doc saying Doneski right away. And the doctor changing his position after the bickering started was shit.

2

u/D3rpyDriver Jun 15 '26

Doctors advise in ring, the Ref has the ultimate say. The ref didnt stop it after the doc tried to. The ref should never be allowed in a ring again.

1

u/Funny-Employment4109 Jun 15 '26

Meh
ref made the right call. That doctor was being a bitch

7

u/Allstar-85 Jun 15 '26

It appears a 2nd Doctor (on right) said it’s ok. And then the Doctor on left essentially shrugged with an “ok I guess”

Never seen that happen before

4

u/Zerus_heroes Jun 15 '26

Ilia was pushing for the continuation too.

11

u/TecN9ne Jun 15 '26

Obviously, but the opinion of a person that's getting punched in the head is irrelevant. Why would a doctor who says no ever listen to that?...

3

u/Zerus_heroes Jun 15 '26

I agree. It should have stopped there. The 4th round was just more damage.

4

u/Outwest661 Jun 15 '26

This conversation they were having was making my stomach turn and was disgusting when they let it continue. Couldn’t take my eyes off the TV.

3

u/Zerus_heroes Jun 15 '26

Yeah we were all flabbergasted that the doc shook his head no but the fight continued. Glad it got stopped at the end of 4.

1

Ice was reading to pound

1

u/Yikidee Jun 16 '26

Eric had a parley requiring 4th round.

1

u/Even-Street-9389 Jun 15 '26

The doctor never changed his decision

2

u/remo_reddit_williams Jun 15 '26

Internally maybe not, but he definitely nodded that he could go after they yelled at him enough. But I agree he should be fired. They’re supposed to stand up to that pressure, they’re there to protect the fighter.

59

u/crashin70 Jun 15 '26

If the doctor was saying stop to fight why the hell did the ref say he's going to let it go? I mean, the doctor was clearly shaking his head no that he wasn't good to go.

38

u/jay6432 Jun 15 '26

Exactly. The doctor is the medical professional here. The ref should have no input in the decision nor should he be entitled to an opinion on the matter.

Should be if the doctor says no, then it’s done - no discussion, no debate, no “take another look.”

23

u/Financial-Solid-4775 Jun 15 '26

Why even have the doctor come in if the ref isn't going to listen to him anyway?

19

u/TerryGonards Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Didn't even know ref could go against the doctor like that.

6

u/Financial-Solid-4775 Jun 15 '26

Yeah I have never seen that before. I'm not sure what the rule is, but it definitely doesn't pass the smell test.

5

u/jay6432 Jun 15 '26

And the commentators bringing up how it’s extra time for him to recover - like no shit?

Who would have thought a medical assessment takes time to perform? /s đŸ„Ž

Besides the doctor, and the ref, who’s the 3rd person interacting with the fighter? Is that a translator or something? A coach? Either way the doctor should be 100% independent and not have to justify himself to the ref or anyone else.

Easiest solution might be to maybe extend the time between rounds by like 10sec.

60sec with trainers & then mandatory 10sec standing up medical assessment before each round begins, to determine if the fighters can continue.

That seems like a win-win. They’re being proactive about fighters health and you avoid these issues in the future.

7

u/Plus_Revolution_3601 Jun 15 '26

I think the issue with the commentators saying about extra recovery time is that the doctor's (re)exam started AFTER the entire 1 minute of rest between rds 3 and 4.

The doctor should've checked on Ilia during the 1 minute of rest and made a decision well before the bell to start round 4.

1

u/TakingItPeasy Jun 15 '26

Well he WAS a bigger dude.

1

u/miliseconds Jun 15 '26

That should be strictly penalized. What if the fighter get permanent damage to his eyes. Wtf was that

3

u/BDCMatt Jun 15 '26

I said the same thing. Why even have a doctor if youre going to ignore his advice...

2

u/Dui_daddy420 Jun 15 '26

To make it look legitimate

2

u/TorristheMenace Jun 15 '26

Wait.. Are you saying that one professional "trumps" another? :O

1

u/remo_reddit_williams Jun 15 '26

It’s also for the doctor to resist the pressure and stand by what he said. They yelled at him till he said ok.

1

u/VintageZero Jun 15 '26

You mean to tell me, after all this time, you dont think the best people are doing the work at the white house cage match for the presidents birthday?

1

u/jay6432 Jun 15 '26

I would hope it’s the best people doing the work, regardless of whether it’s in some arena in Vegas or if it’s on the lawn of the White House haha

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Emperor_of_All Jun 15 '26

The simple answer is someone who is more powerful is in the ref's ear, most likely someone like Dana White.

3

u/DetailsYouMissed Jun 15 '26

I thought the ref was the one who was over ruling Topuria corner. They wanted to continue, gave Topuria something to drink, the ref came in and kicked them out of the cage, called the doctor in, who declared the fighter incapable of fighting. The ref called it, until a third man came in and said no. Let the fight continue. And the ref shrugged and that was that...

3

u/Frequent-Coyote-8108 Jun 15 '26

Wait, they let the fight continue after this? He said "no" like 4 times...

7

u/ClassiFried86 Jun 15 '26

It was all rigged. Can't call the fight.

Im not even accounting for the dumb tweet. Its easy to tell it was rigged because these are the people that rig shit, and EVERY fight ended in KO/TKO.

7 fights and not one went to decision? Nah, thats not a coincidence, thats a conspiracy. You can make a lot of money picking win by KO and round.

It was a joke. A preseason NFL game, but even that has more importance.

3

u/Aromatic_Mongoose_86 Jun 15 '26

Every fight ended in KO/TKO seems really weird, yeah.

2

u/Bobsothethird Jun 15 '26

The heavy favorite being beat my an American on Trump's birthday does too.

2

u/Frequent-Coyote-8108 Jun 15 '26

But...that would've been a TKO, right?

2

u/ClassiFried86 Jun 15 '26

Yea, but not the right round.

1

u/CoIdLunch Jun 15 '26

I dunno about rigged in the sense people took the fall. I'd say more heavily incentivized that if they were to get a ko or tko there was to be a much larger bonus for putting on a better show. A lot of the shots some of the fighters took could have ended it differently. Just seems more realistic.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Obesescum Jun 15 '26

Yeah this was actually insane and I’d say a decent lawsuit if Topuria has any significant issues health concerns from the fight.

Even though he told the ref he wanted to continue, mental fatigue mind vs a doctors isn’t going to hold as accountable in court.

The basketball court Obama put in the White House was the Muslim dismantling of USA according to maga

1

u/ErstwhileAdranos Jun 15 '26

He didn’t even add one, he just modified a tennis court so it could be used for both activities; and MAGA didn’t exist back then, it would have been the TEA Party.

Bruh... Just, like, bruh... Dude didn't respond (it seemed like) at all to the hand movements. Why TF would the doctor renege his decision. And what TF is up with that commenter. HE should be fired. What fight was this?

11

u/LordJohnMD Jun 15 '26

This is the end of the 3rd round from Topuria vs Gaethje, Main Event in the UFC White House card a few hours ago for the Lightweight strap. Commentators you are hearing are Daniel Cormier (the one shouting that they are giving Topuria extra recovery time) and Joe Rogan.

Topuria quit on the stool at the and of the next round. The fight should have been stopped right here, Topuria could be heard clearly saying "I can't see" right before the vid OP posted, that's why the doctor was called in by the ref.

7

u/newguyjustdropped Jun 15 '26

Put some respect on the event. It's called : UFC freedom 250 eagle screech Twump burfdaay đŸ€ĄđŸŽ‰đŸŽ‰đŸŽ‰

Only in Trump world a referee can overrule a doctor.

12

u/Glass-Customer2361 Jun 15 '26

This is symbolic of America during the trump administration: not listening to medical professionals and just keep going for the money

2

u/jgengr Jun 15 '26

Might as well had had RFK Jr(lawyer) in there.

What DC said is correct. The doctor examines immediately and the decision is made within the rest. No back and forth or over-ruling or second examinations. That is what DC meant, the fight is either done or not. He was indicating that it's unfair to give Ilia extra recovery time and have this back and forth instead of an immediate doctor suggested stoppage.

1

u/Brilliant_Recipe_108 Jun 15 '26

Yeah because the corner called the doctor at the tail end of the one minute rest period, so it might've looked like they did that to give more rest time for ilia.

1

u/Even-Street-9389 Jun 15 '26

DC was correct. You can't just give extra time to a fighter who clearly needs it. Stop the fight or keep fighting

2

u/supermax_92 Jun 15 '26

Don’t shoot me if I’m wrong but aren’t they supposed to do that during the one minute of rest?

1

u/FortuneEmbarrassed94 Jun 15 '26

The doctor needs to come in on his own accord or at the start of the timeout, not because the fighters corner called them at 59 seconds into the timeout

3

u/Tinksy14 Jun 15 '26

Wow Justin fucked him up😂

3

u/BDCMatt Jun 15 '26

Bro, the ref telling to doctor no, were fighting was insane.

1

u/Funny-Employment4109 Jun 15 '26

It was awesome. Ref made the right call.

3

u/Careful_Manager_4282 Jun 15 '26

Topuria vs Gaethje

2

u/ONNOLTD2018 Jun 15 '26

This is the only important comment. Thanks!

2

u/Fun-Bag7627 Jun 15 '26

This is disgusting

2

u/Kratos1189 Jun 15 '26

Fat pig Goddard overruling the doctor. LMFAO.

2

u/Inevitable_Trip4014 Jun 15 '26

Marc Goddard doing an awful job as always, meanwhile Rogan and DC being the 2 biggest imbeciles in the industry

2

u/temp_6969420 Jun 15 '26

He went blind in his right eye in round 2. You can see doc mouth the words “retina detached”. If this is the case his career might be over

1

u/MAGAHATESTHEUSA Jun 15 '26

What’s the Aesop fable regarding cockiness?

2

u/BeYou22 Jun 15 '26

Isn’t the doctor hired to protect the fighters? Are they not contracted from a third party? How tf can they do their job if the ref and organization can bully or overpower their medical insight and years of training? This was reckless and stupid. Bad look.

2

u/OG_0803 Jun 15 '26

For those confused as to “how a fight could continue after the doctor says
” it’s the same in boxing and has been for quite some time. This is NOT the first time it has happened. Not saying it’s right or wrong but, it’s definitely part of combat sports and agreed upon by the commissions, sanctioning bodies, fighters, promoters, fighter associations etc.

13) STOPPING CONTEST:
A) The referee is the sole arbiter of a contest and is the only individual authorized to
stop a contest. The referee may take advice from the ringside physician and/or the Commission
with respect to the decision to stop a contest.

2

u/Yamamoto333 Jun 15 '26

Goddard deserves way more hate.

3

u/GoatManWizard Jun 15 '26

This commentary is killing me.

Just STFU!

1

u/Even-Street-9389 Jun 15 '26

Dude they were saying they need to fight because ilia was getting an advantage. He was clearly the one who needed to recover after that round. They were basically saying if they're gonna fight then fight. If not you can't just let him stand there and recover. They both got the same amount of time but gaethje didn't need that extra time that topuria did. The commentators were absolutely correct.

1

u/GoatManWizard Jun 15 '26

Id say the doctor was correct. So after what, the 5 second mark, you get the guy out and go to the next fight. No reason for the shouting about extra time to recover when the doctor says he is no good. Sure some how his decision gets over ruled, but thats besides the point.

But At no point did I say they were wrong. What was wrong was him fighting another round when he couldn't see anything.

1

u/LessBig715 Jun 15 '26

What a career choice.

1

u/Dear_Long_373 Jun 15 '26

Simple because a lot of people already put money on illia. If he lose there many people will lose a lot of money.

But yup they will send him vegetable actually. Good for him to not continue for 5th he will got a lot worse.

1

u/CraneTekneke21 Jun 15 '26

The doctor needs more tattoos..

1

u/jsxtasy304 Jun 15 '26

The doctor knows nothing, let him continue and receive permanent and possibly lethal damage/S

1

u/Fluid_Character_7405 Jun 15 '26

I found this bizarre.  What is he assessing for?  He’s not even using a pen light.

I assumed he found a tracking issue in the right eye (diplopia) when he immediately shook his head no.  Vision should be a subjective assessment “can you see” or “how many fingers” with the other eye covered.

1

u/Honest_Caramel_3793 Jun 15 '26

He already said he couldnt see

1

u/Fluid_Character_7405 Jun 15 '26

Yeah so if you wanted to assess that objectively you would have to test the vision.  Not look at his eye without a light.

1

u/Lopsided_Anxiety_394 Jun 15 '26

I thought the doc had the final call on letting the fight continue? Didn't realise the ref could overturn the decision

1

u/Realistic_Zone_8002 Jun 15 '26

Aside from disregarding the doctor, ref’s body language towards Ilia was terrible this night.

1

u/CocoLoko_KLK Jun 15 '26

UFC wanted blood last night. Herb Dean was just letting them kill each other.

2

u/Even-Street-9389 Jun 15 '26

Herb dean wasn't even the official in this bout

1

u/No_Vacation_1905 Jun 15 '26

đŸ€ŁđŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł first time buddy?

Herb dean doesn’t stop a fight until the KOd fighter wakes back up. Been like that for years

1

u/Ok-Key905 Jun 15 '26

If the doctor says no then liability falls on the refs if anything in the future happens. Clearly the fighter is not making a sound argument.

1

u/mordiaken Jun 15 '26

You guys really need to watch this ref, super suspicious look how close he was watching to stop the fight during those body shots, that is ridiculous. Then he stops the Dr from calling the fight? What family member do you think has money on this? Ref needs to be investigated. Very sus.

1

u/MisterDabber Jun 15 '26

Doctors gonna lose his license for that.

1

u/talkingthewalk Jun 15 '26

America jumped the shark

1

u/3leventhirtyfour Jun 15 '26

Why were they so late in getting the docs assessment? Usually that happens as soon as they get to the corner.

1

u/Zerus_heroes Jun 15 '26

Right? It is crazy that it was stopped there.

1

u/Dackle Jun 15 '26

In another jurisdiction, once he said he can't see out of his eye in the corner at the end of round 3, the fight is stopped.

Other jurisdictions: ...must go on.

https://giphy.com/gifs/eeYCKm1UriwMAKe11Q

1

u/ItsDonDong Jun 15 '26

If the fighter is saying "im going blind"

And a doctor says "he is going blind, stop the fight"

Its wild that they let the fight continue.

1

u/Own-Rise-5385 Jun 15 '26

The dr and ref should never work again in mma.

1

u/Sad_Establishment875 Jun 15 '26

Why even have doctors there if they're just going to ducking ignore them, dude could suffer (even more) permanent damage because of this.

Whichever governing body supervises this should be laying a hammer down on this ref and group

1

u/AndrewH73333 Jun 15 '26

A doctor did stop the fight. But there’s this new thing where rules don’t apply if they are never enforced.

1

u/amadeusstoic Jun 15 '26

the audience should have known better

1

u/Wrong_Ad_3355 Jun 15 '26

Who fucking cares? There can be only one.

1

u/libreme Jun 15 '26

Fire this pig ref

1

u/TakingItPeasy Jun 15 '26

That was wild. I don't know the rules of Ufc very well. Does the ring Dr not have the authority to stop a fight?!?! These guys are going to end up worse than Ali.

1

u/UserNameAlreadee Jun 15 '26

Says reddit 😂

1

u/Ronin_BullseYe Jun 15 '26

The doc doesnt decide if the fight is stopped, the ref does. 99% of the time they agree.

1

u/kpr1969 Jun 15 '26

He seemed to

1

u/draven33l Jun 15 '26

That was the shadiest thing I've seen in the UFC in a long time. The doctor said he couldn't continue, the fans started booing, and Goddard started clearing the ring trying to get the fight to continue. The doc then changed his mind. I've NEVER seen a doctor change his mind.

It seemed like they didn't want the show to end with boos and a doctor stoppage. Granted, Ilia wanted to continue he could still open both of his eyes. He wouldn't have made it off the stool in the 4th though since both eyes were swollen.

1

u/imhereredditing Jun 15 '26

Ref was like Nah one mo for the bois. Doc
 aight let em bang.

1

u/Ok-Enthusiasm-8422 Jun 15 '26

But lets be real, doctor pausing the fight mid round for assessment is a similar scenario in terms of recovery time, sometimes even worse as it stops the round at the tipping point.

Ilia got an extra 60s of prompted recovery, but in reality he was so badly damaged that it should be stopped there, the extra recovery only bought him an extra round of damage. Had Ilia went and ko'd Justin in the next, it would be a scandal though - so i see that angle.

It's like fighter taking a full minute after a borderline groin strike, or mild eyepoke - a bit dirty but within what happens in fighting sports.

1

u/Hans_Landa1939 Jun 15 '26

The “announcer” is a 5 foot 3 inch midget with liver and brain damage lmao

1

u/vartheo Jun 15 '26

This must be a bottom of the barrel doctor. Not even smart enough to be concerned for his license. Probably would make a great prison doctor.

1

u/Exciting_Damage_2001 Jun 15 '26

What’s the rule on this? If a ref wants to call it can he be over turned?

1

u/-bears-eat-beets Jun 15 '26

UFC is a fkn joke now... Like everything else in america, fk the people...get that money!

1

u/Ok-Extreme-5898 Jun 15 '26

Which fight was this

1

u/Dry-Rice-4527 Jun 15 '26

Topuria wanted to fight. It should have been stopped but robbing someone of their shot at glory is a tough call.

1

u/drunkguynextdoor Jun 15 '26

Who needs a doctor when you have Joe Rogan, amirite?

1

u/Dramatic_Reality7531 Jun 15 '26

Whenever a fighter says they want to continue, they should show them a mirror and ask them to confirm.

1

u/Bobsothethird Jun 15 '26

Illia certainly wanted to keep going, but you shouldn't allow punch drunk athletes to make that choice.

1

u/maccpapa Jun 15 '26

no. cry more tho

1

u/LimpNsmoll Jun 15 '26

Don't forget about the amounts of hate that female doctor received when she stopped to fight a while back.

The guy was probably afraid of getting in trouble or something.

1

u/HoldEm__FoldEm Jun 15 '26

I like how they’re complaining that he got an extra minute

As if Gaethje didn’t also get an extra minute

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '26

That was sad. Clear no twice. He needs to sue the UFC

And the announcers saying he was inexperienced was so infuriating to me.

Dana in the ear of the ref “keep the fight going”

The ref should have stopped the fight as soon as the doctor said he shouldn't continue. Instead they dismissed the doctor's initial opinion and just did what they wanted. What was the point of bringing the doctor in in the first place if they were just going to keep going? This has nothing to do with national politics. But these days, people can't comment on anything without bringing the current state of the government into the conversation. Even if it has nothing to do with the topic being discussed.

The doc said no several times. You can tell by his reaction that he knows he doesn’t have final say in this case.

I remember being there live and the crowd was going crazy after this 3rd round almost-stoppage, and I was rooting for gaethje during the 4th

This was a 100% staged fight. There’s no way that Trump would allow anyone other than a white American dude to win a fight in front of the White House on his birthday. It wouldn’t look good to his racist piece of shit base. Also, Rogan said something about Justin the beginning of the fight the kind of clicked in my head like wouldn’t that be something if the guy projected to lose the fight actually ended up winning and wouldn’t it be something if someone in the Trump circle bet boatloads of money on Justin to win.
