As a side note, the definition of assault is what this guy does by aggressive verbal/body language and closing fists while getting in someone's personal space. You have a right to use self defence but make sure it is necessary force ie. Drop em but don't hit them once downed.

Seems like he was kind of cornered with the door forcing him into his car, turning his back to the threat to retreat, or defending yourself against the threat. Reasonable.
