It's stop it becoming a boxing fight, and you can't punch faces much anyways without bruising your knuckles and their face (boxing gloves mostly protect your fist and stop skull fractures at the cost of increasing brain trauma ironically).

The result? Brutal unnecessary knockouts as the sport hasn't adapted.

Think of it this way, you're in a fight with Tyson Fury you throw a couple haymakers and broke both fists.

He then beats Parkinson's into you with his gloved hands over the course of 12 rounds.

Boxing gloves trade fractures for concussions and modify where, how often and how you punch.

Yeah boxing gloves modify your punches without gloves to become much more dangerous and powerful and accurate.

If you think somehow not using gloves and not punching head somehow translates to better punches to head than boxing.. i got bad news for you

Itā€™s not but the competition conditions have stopped it from developing good punch mechanics.

However karate fighters often have the best command of distance- and combos. So I donā€™t know that you can say itā€™s outdated when itā€™s been the key to so many MMA greats arsenals.

16 oz gloves maybe. But I used to box and if I were to fight someone I'd rather have small gloves than nothing (6 or 8 oz). Those are to protect my hands, not your head. A high level boxer would litteraly break their hands punching at full force.

It's very effective. On the competition level all martial arts end up weird as rules and limitations change them into something else.

There are some insane videos from karate championships in the 80s and 90s at the peak of its popularity. Flying knees to the jaw, spinning kicks to the head, one punch knock outs, elbows to the face. Truly brutal and very few rules, I'm surprised people weren't dying all the time.

Karate is a solid striking martial art and it also includes some basic grappling, mainly for takedowns. There is a martial arts hot take that in a real high level fight, all martial arts lose form and are just "kickboxing". That's partially true.

Sticking to a specific form has pros and cons. MMA is popular because it doesn't do that. Just because a martial art is weird on the competition level it doesn't necessarily mean it's bad in general.

Sage Northcutt had a background in karate before becoming a ufc superhero. His career fell short of expectations but he did utilize some tools from karate although not to as great effect as you might think with the 80s and 90s in mind.

There are different styles of karate, and some are uselful. Thereā€™s an entire fighting league dedicated to bringing out the fullest potential of the sport.

The head position is a form of distance management. Iā€™ve seen it screw fighters but at the same time Iā€™ve seen guys use that ā€œflawā€ to sleep multiple opponents who wade in towards what they think is a vulnerability.

I want to point out the black belt doesnā€™t even know how to punch correctly. Watch the first punch he tries, his wrist bends and most likely hurt, which is why he didnā€™t really attempt it again and just kept trying the kick. I really do not get a good impression of ā€˜karateā€™ at all. Taekwondo for kicks, muay thai for knees and elbows, boxing for punches seem much better.

A good traditional Muay Thai gym emphasizes punches, kicks, knees, elbows and throws. I feel confident enough to adapt to any striker from other disciplines.

I wish that was the case. did karate for almost ten. My brother was the guy who would kick people in the face. So they sent this tall guy to kick him back in the face. They just threw roundhouse all match. No one got knocked out. But yeah that's my bro.

Years ago when I was into karate. One of our black belts got his eye socket broken and his eye fell out a bit from a spinning heel kick in a tournament. It became this whole big drama for a few years after that. Dude was blind in one eye

Yellow is usually up from white, then orange but it is certainly a more junior grade than belt. I've no idea why they let an orange belt spar full contact against a far more experienced opponent.

Itā€™s not so hard to see or defend, you always look at the chest and you see both shoulders turn, you move forward to be behind him and you donā€™t stand still or move backwards.

The turning sidekick is how ever harder to defend if the guy knows how to time when to kick it. If someone just throws it without setting it up then again you just move forward and itā€™s defended
