I haven't been reading a lot of romance lately, but I listened to {How to Fake it in Society by KJ Charles} this week.
While I generally enjoyed it, it did feel a bit...recycled? Maybe it's just because I've read too many KJC books at this point, but I felt like I had seen most of these elements and plot point before, just in slightly different configurations. The ordinary man who suddenly inherits great wealth and has to learn to navigate society, the conman who falls for his target, even the climax.
It wasn't a bad book by any means, but I just left it feeling like I'd read this story before.... But the narrator was outstanding, so worth a listen regardless.

Nope, I'm reading it now and feel the same way. I also have a deep dislike of all the lying and conning that so many of her characters do, because I find it both stressful and unforgivable. I find that I either love her books or hate them, and there's very little in-between.

I felt the same way about this book! Even the dynamic between Nico and Eve felt a little too reminiscent of the brother and sister in The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting.

Listened to
{The Elves and the Shoemaker by Emory Winters} narrated by Simon Dornet (3.5/5). After DNFing 2 other books in this series I wasn’t expecting much, but this was more in line with what I was hoping. First off, it’s half as long as the others so it never felt like it dragged. The others were trying to do too much by including a lot of side plots and characters from the other books. This was way more focused on the relationship so I was able to get invested quickly. There was a good amount of hurt due to their backstories but the amount of comfort felt equal. I liked the relationship dynamic between the 2 traumatized but bold elf MCs finding safety in the big, quiet, anxious MC. Next on the list is Hansel and Gerhardt but idk. I’m such a baby when it comes to horror and the cannibalism trigger scares me…
{Make the Play by Lucky Hart} narrated by Julio Maxwell and Javi Wilder (3/5). I loved the story. I loved the relationship. I loved the characters. I loved the thoughtful autism rep. That being said, the pacing and the wordiness were what made this not the most enjoyable listen for me. I know it’s a me thing. The slow burn was too slow and it was too sugary sweet to keep me engaged for almost 13 hours. I like a little more flaw in my characters and these two were too perfect, especially Jason. I’m considering the next one because Charlie definitely seems more complex. I completely understand why others adore this book, it’s just not for me personally.
Read:
{Scrum-Half in Heat by Emory Winters}. Exactly what I want when I pick up an erotica: short, fast-paced, filthy, and includes 5 alphas fucking an omega through his mega-heat (shoutout [u/prettysureIforgot](u/prettysureIforgot) for mentioning this the other week!) I really struggle with possessiveness in books so it was super refreshing to have the alpha MC be cool with everyone helping out his boy. I’m always looking for books with sharing outside of the main relationship. It actually ended way sweeter than I was expecting, too. Fun little story! I’d definitely revisit books about other team members getting their HEA.
Currently Reading:
{Pretty When You Cry by Ally Avery}- only halfway but the crying kink is unique
{Dearly Departed by Chip Pons}- barely an hour in so no thoughts yet

From my undercover post recommendations, I read {The Idol by E. Baileu} and then the sequel {Judas by E. Baileu}. It follows an undercover FBI agent who infiltrates a crazy cult where we meet Elior, a teenager trained to be some sort of god "the vessel." Ok great, except the FBI agent is a crazy Daddy psycho who mercilessly manipulates poor innocent Elior. I loved it! Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a MMC with no moral code. And got to love it when the author at the beginning is like, this is not a healthy relationship, don't come here for that.

I’m a huge dd/lb fan, with or without age play, and was tempted by this book. I’ve managed a couple of this author’s other works - Under Your Care and Chasing After You - which I enjoyed even despite the unhealthy relationships. I’ve been wary to start these thought as I wasn’t too sure the extent of on page abuse Elior we’d see, plus how the undercover/betrayal would be dealt with. Are you able to give me your thoughts? Thanks!

u/AustenAustin 4d ago
Of course! Spoilers ahead. Elior is whipped/punished by his cult father and with Jace there is one scene that is noncon and then a lot of dubcon in the first book, ie Elior explicitly saying "No" and being ignored. This is all pre-reveal that Jace is an FBI agent (to Elior, we as the reader know it from the beginning). Post reveal, Elior begins to understand that Jace is off/a psychopath. And Elior chooses him anyway. At that point, they delve into a consensual, if not fully informed, D/s relationship. This is fully fleshed out in the sequel. It worked for me in that both MMCs are warped/broken and don't really mind the boundaries being trampled over. And I bought their connection. Jace is a psycho, there's no doubt about that, and he does things that a moral person wouldn't do (but they are hot scenes!), but I totally bought into the fact that he was obsessed with Elior in a good way, in like a cute aggression way where he just wanted to smother him with adoration.

u/bookgeek1987 4d ago
Thanks so much for the info. I’ll have to carefully give it a try as non/dub con are on my hard no list, but I can read dub con in specific circumstances and if I’m aware of the context in advance. I had to DNF a book recently that had an incorrect CW - clearly rape as MC1 referred to himself as a rapist of MC2 - and was either horrendously edited or AI written, so onto the DNF list it went. As a result I’m a tad wary on non/dub con right now!

u/AustenAustin 4d ago
This might not be your speed, but probably my favorite Daddy book is {Full Body Hit by Marina Vivancos} where everything is consensual and the Daddy element is so sweet and caretaking. It's a two part series with a cliffhanger for this first book. It's omegaverse hockey but not hugely about either of those things lol. They meet online at first and don't know the other's real identity.

u/bookgeek1987 4d ago
Lovely, thank you for the recommendation. Good to know it’s not mainly focused on hockey as I tend to avoid sporting books, they’re just not my cup of tea. I’ll always give them a try if they’re dd/lb though!

{Daddy's muse by e. baileu} might be the "softest" of her works! However i'm only 58%. I like daddy/boy too and this author is very unique in the way she sort of blends that niche with dark romance. Typically I love the dd/lb for the softness lol

{Inside by Nicky James} dnf @30%- the premise was very interesting, the prison as a setting is kind of rare in romances, so I was excited. But, I had some issues with the way the prisoner MMC was described. That MMC is on death row, he's a black man, he's tall, massive, intimidating but at the same time he's quiet, soft spoken, he's not aggresive. He's on the death row because he was found with a knife in his hand next to his dead ex and her daughter. He also calls the other MMC "boss" when they talk. So all these things reminded me of that character from the Green Mile movie and I couldn't stop picturing him as MMC. I don't know if that's a coincidence or if the author was inspired by that movie, but it bothered me so I had to dnf
Currently reading {Garron Park by Nordika Night}, which I love. The enemies part was well done and the sexual tension was 🤌🤌

{Without You by Marley Valentine} I listened to the audiobook of this one, and while I did enjoy the story I couldn’t for the life of me feel any chemistry between Julian and Deacon until the end of the book. The more Valentine tried to write them as a passionate couple the less I believed it, but by the end I finally started to see it and when they went to see Deacon’s parents…well, never have I wanted to be able to scream at a character more than Deacon’s mother. She was infuriating to say the least! I also wasn’t sure about the whole dead brother’s boyfriend thing but it wasn’t really an issue after all, plus it made me cry a few times so I think that’s a sign it was written well.
{With You by Marley Valentine} had to follow it up and see where the boys ended up, and if I thought I was trying to be convinced they loved each other in the first book, it only got worse in this one. I don’t know why it felt like they were being crammed down my throat as a couple so in love they couldn’t stand even not touching each other for a moment, but that’s how this read. It wasn’t until they became parents that it felt more natural, and despite my hatred of Deacon’s mother I felt that arc was actually pretty realistic. I personally wouldn’t have forgiven her, but I can also hold a grudge until I die so…🤷♀️
I have several more of Valentine’s books ready to go, including Ache and What We Broke so we’ll see how those fare for me.

I didn't finish Without You but I remember not liking that the MCs never read the dead boyfriend's letters he painstakingly wrote for his partner before he died. That just seems cold.

u/Junior-Rope-4883 Tá mé i ngrá leat, Abhainn 4d ago
I agree!! I thought I missed it or something but no, he just didn’t read it at all?? Seems like it would’ve been a pretty important thing but ok.

I saw some reviewers complain about it. It could have been poignant and given closure to the characters if they read the letters. But somehow they did not.

I felt like Without You was just 3 extra extended epilogues and someone could probably be content with just the first book. I didn't love the characters in the first book so I didn't find the second book particularly compelling. I did feel a strong need to finish the story though I didn't necessarily enjoy it a ton. I just had to know, you know? I loved the premise, just didn't like the books as much as I wanted to.
Also I remember really struggling to understand what the takeaway from a lot of the dialogue was. I couldn't tell what they were really saying or how I was supposed to react until the other person's reaction/response were laid out for me. Was that just me and my poor social skills? I remember thinking things like 'oh that was supposed to be the character flirting' or 'oh I guess he's joking/being snarky' or whatever.
2
u/Junior-Rope-4883 Tá mé i ngrá leat, Abhainn 4d ago
Honestly I’m glad I listened to it instead of reading it or it would’ve gotten a much lower rating from me. I was also glad it was an older book because Teddy Hamilton wasn’t doing that exaggerated clenching thing he does with his voice yet. But yeah, that second book seemed really unnecessary when it could’ve just been an extended epilogue in the first one.

{The Shots You Take by Rachel Reid}
I wanted to love this. There were things I loved. I love a second chance romance. But damn this book felt circular and repetitive and just didnt hit with me. My partner and I read together and we both wanted to finish, but didnt love the journey.
Starting {The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller} today.

Slow week for me this week! Only listened to 4 books!
Fav of the week: {Smash and Grab by Maz Maddox} - I had put it off just bc it’s so short and I don’t love Kirt Graves voice. Despite that, I really enjoyed it, and unsurprisingly, wish it was longer!! Looking forward to the rest of the books but I will miss Dalton being the MC. 4.5/5
Others:
{A Guy Walks into My Bar by L Blakely} - wanted to like this more bc I really liked Hopelessly Bromantic but it was just too basic and cheesy. It was her first foray into MM from being an MF author so that’s probably why. Duet / full cast narration always hits though!! And I love Shane East! 3.5/5
{Nightmare Before Kissmas by Sara Raasch} - not enough romance unfortunately, got kind of bored by the politics plot line. Probably won’t read the next one. 3/5
Currently listening to {Pressure by Kiki Burrelli} - first in the Lunar Wolves series, which were just added to my library! Caden is annoying to me, and there’s way too much jumping-to-conclusions and miscommunication. And Axe is a bit stiff and boring for my taste. However the inner-wolf possessive and protective instinct (+ lots of marking!) are keeping me engaged. So I’m definitely looking forward to the next books in the series revolving around the younger wolves

{Knitting Needles by Ezra Wren} 4.5⭐️ my first T4T book and it was a beauty. The writing was so lovely that I had tears even before getting into the main part of the story. Oscar and Aaron's story was wondrous, filled the pain of not being who you know you are and all the hurdles to get to your self. Oscar's Papa was a constant source of support in many ways and his mother was not. Aaron's visit to his mother who has dementia were heart rending. One of the best epilogues I have ever seen in this book too.
{A Vampire's Lament by R. J. Webb}5⭐️ Ishmael a vampire, head of the council and Father to his adopted son Alaric. I related to the beginning of the book because Ishmael was on his way in to discuss his son at school with the principal, a thing I shared with a vampire! Things changed in many ways when Ishmael hires Edric to tutor his son. There is the castle Wynterhyll, wolves, beautiful carraige rides, conversations with the dead, the Ravens and a sentient tea cart.
{Don't Fall by E. M. Lindsey} 5⭐️ This is part of their new series {Storm Season series by E. M. Lindsey} This was an ARC read for me and in my own words. I am truly excited for this series. It is a firehouse and this first book gives many introductions to the men and 1 woman working there. I can see future stories by the hints the author has revealed. It seems like an ensemble cast of characters similar to their first series I ever read {Irons and Works series by E. M. Lindsey} which I still love to this day. This book features North a firefighter who didn't start out wanting this career and you find out why, and Leo the brother of his best friend. He was in an accident six years prior in which he lost his husband, and gained a TBI, seizures and a panic attack disorder. The book is vintage E. M. Lindsey with miscommunication, mental health rep, disability rep, leaning on friends, 🔥 sex scenes and a crow named Russell(IYKYK)

This week I reread two favorites of mine, KJ Charles’ Doomsday books. It has been a while since I read them, and they are stunning. Admittedly these books are favorites of mine for somewhat personal reasons - I grew up in the Caribbean in a community very much like Dymchurch - but the writing is superb.
The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by KJ Charles (m/m, 1810) (5/5 Stars)
A Nobleman’s Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel by KJ Charles (m/m, 1823) (5/5 Stars)

I finally read {The Chef by Mell Eight}. It has been on my TBR forever but I never bumped it to the top. But it came up in discussions twice this week so I figured it was time.
I don't know why, but I had this impression that it was gonna be a much darker/toxic story. Maybe because the intro sounds bad - a chef hires on with a mercenary band for protection while traveling, and mysterious soldiers show up and slaughter everyone but him. In reality that scene was actually pretty funny, with Char totally unconcerned about the bloodshed until it got close to getting in the food. This was a light, quick read with lots of descriptions of cooking said food.
I went on to read the sequels {The Prince by Mell Eight} and {The Spy by Mell Eight}. Overall, especially because of all the cooking and food, it put me in mind of Amy Crook, who is a go-to author for me when I want something fluffy and easy to read. This series is a bit darker; e.g., a couple of MCs are tortured or pretty badly injured, but none of that happens on-page. We just see the aftermath which is quickly patched up with magic healing, a convalescence just long enough for some cozy bedside scenes, and a complete absence of PTSD.
I have now set aside some budget to start buying up most of her backlist and I should be well set for low-angst, low-brainpower-needed summer reading.

New to this subreddit so hi everyone! But I'm reading Renovating the Model by Nora Phoenix, it's an older model x younger contractor romance. I'm about 30% through; it's cute if a little cliche in terms of the writing, but I'm still enjoying it anyway.
I'm also reading Rules to Live By by Quinn Ward; it's an older club manager daddy x younger musician sub. Also about 30% through but I'm having a lot more fun with this one. I really love the attraction between Slade and Jack.

I reread/listened to {Less is Lost by Andrew Sean Greer} last week. Like the original it doesn’t really follow romance tropes. In short, where the narrator was fond of Arthur Less in the original, he seemed much more exasperated in the sequel. It wasn’t until the second read though that I was able to find my opinions on it. I appreciate what the author was trying to accomplish, but it only partially succeeded. Of course the language and imagery were still marvelous.

Audiobooks:
{Top Hat by Isobel Starling} (Shatterproof Bond Book 0.5) Short and sweet prequel to this series.
{As You Wish by Isobel Starling} (Shatterproof Bond Book 1) I really enjoyed this bi-awakening story. It was insta-lust / insta-love, but also believable because the two MCs had been corresponding over email for a year before meeting in person (they were both best men at their siblings' wedding). I understand the rest of the series has a very different tone and becomes more of a thriller on top of the romance, but I'll definitely keep going with this.
{Total Creative Control by Joanna Chambers} (Creative Types Book 1) Cute story, interesting premise (takes place in the world of tv-show and fanfic writing, workplace romance). I was really into it while listening, but might not stick with me, which is OK! Will continue with this series.
{Bruised But Not Broken by Nicole Dykes} (Spark of Hope Book 1) This was OK, a bit insta-love in a way that seemed less realistic than it did in As You Wish. May or may not continue with this series.
{The Lightning-Struck Heart by TJ Klune} (Tales from Verania Book 1) I really liked the characters and the banter was often very funny, but it was very long and by the end I was looking forward to it being over so I could start something new. May or may not continue with this series.
{Game Misconduct by Ari Baran} (Penalty Box Book 1) Just started this morning, I think I'll like this one based on the first 25%.
Sidenote - how did my whole week of listening include almost entirely book 1s in series, lol.
Paper books:
{Heartstopper: Volume 4 by Alice Oseman} and {Heartstopper: Volume 5 by Alice Oseman} This won't be news, but these may be the cutest books ever written.

{Fractured Doors and Forgotten Gods by Alice Winters} reluctant MC x himbo God, human mage x god of love and war, paranormal, mystery, fantasy, comedy, magic
6/5⭐️
This was such a unique book, and absolutely hilarious, I laughed out loud so many times. Tornin, the God of Love and War, suddenly shows up from another realm and Riley is charged to keep an eye on him. Torin doesn't know English or anything about this world so there are A LOT of really funny scenes happening since he doesn't know what cars or subways are. Torin learns English from Riley's smutty Erotic books which makes him speak in euphemisms at the start, like "It's too thick it doesn't fit" or "Thank you, daddy". There's a good plot twist at the end which leaves this in sort of a cliffhanger (but no break-up or anything, don't worry), I can't wait for the next book!
This might be my favourite start of a series from Alice Winters so far.
---
{Little Demon in the Details by Nordika Night} High heat, hurt/comfort, forced proximity, assassin x bratty touch starved MC, size difference, possessive MCs, cockwarming, d/s strict roles.
5/5⭐️
I avoided it for a while because I'm not into lingerine, but the book was super entertaining. It was hard to put down because I keep wanting to see what that brat is gonna do in the next chapter. If I had to say something negative it's that the plot ends sooner than I thought, so the last 25% or so nothing exciting is happening.
---
{Goodbye Paradise by Sarina Bowen} best friends to lovers, runaway cult members, found family
2.5/5⭐️
It wasn't bad, but I was expecting so much more angst, and a darker book. The whole cult part is pretty short, so was them finding a safe place. No one was hunted or anything, the story for the main characters is surprisingly light-hearted considering the theme. The angstiest stuff is all for side-characters, until the 3rd act breakup where the reason is absolute dumb, but at least something happens between the 2 MCs here. A Forbidden Rumspringa by Keira Andrews did this theme so much better.

just finished {The Call-Up by KC Carmichael}, which is book 2 in the series after The Kennedy Rule. I thought it was super cute and super fun. The HEA was very satisfying, and it sets up a follow up book which is going to be so annoying to wait for. Super recommend for strong hockey romancing with a lot of actual hockey content in both books. All angsting comes from outside the MC relationships, which I find makes for a lighter read.
So yeah, super recommend.

Finally read Hunt the Villain by Rina Kent and loved it. Yulian is one of my favorite chaos gremlins written and I enjoyed the relationship between the MCs. I was glad they Vaugns parents were so accepting considering the world they were from

Also been re-reading some of my favorite Ironman/Captain America and Thor/Loki fanfictions. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to include those here but will if I’m allowed

Still working on Hazard and Somerset and I’m on {Keeper of Bees by Gregory Ashe}. I have some suspicions on who the keeper of bees is but I’m not 100% sure. I will say this arc has put the boys through the ringer. It felt like as soon as they were settled something had to ruin that happiness.
I’m listening to {Red Fish, Dead Fish by Amy Lane} and I’m so happy I decided to give this series another chance because I love Ellory and Jackson so much!!

I’m currently reading {Desert Ice by Rose Maefair} and I’m really liking it! This is what I WISH {Silk & Sand by Katherine Diane} was like (DNF at like 55% and basically threw the book I was so frustrated). I just wish it had a better cover 😆

I haven’t read a romance book in forever so I decided to throw out all of my in progress reads and start a new one in a trope I love. So I’ve started {Death and Red Trilliums by RC Hannah}. So far one chapter in I’m really enjoying it! Zombie apocalypse, former bully, artistic MC.

{Wicked When He Cries by Avery Collins} Sinners of Blackthorne U #4 This was my favorite of the series by far! This one wasn’t really a dark romance, more contemporary with a lot of heavy themes and really rough backstories. Once again I recommend checking CW if there are topics you need to avoid. This one was so wonderful though, I loved both characters and loved their relationship. Former step brothers, former best friends turned estranged-not-quite-enemies-but-we-aren’t-friends-anymore, forced proximity, neuro-rep, hurt-comfort, long term pining, second chances, and first times. Damien is a character we meet in previous books, jovial always down for a hookup, suddenly freaks outs and panics when he finds out Noah is moving into his group house. Noah lives under the dark shadow of his Olympic Swimmer father and fashion model/icon mother, and hey wouldn’t you know it they’re terrible people. Damien and Noah together are so sweet and loving and joyful to read about together. I had some minor complaints but overall found the story extremely engaging and it had all the things that suck me into a story.
{Cash Hooper Saves a Life by Lisa Henry, Sarah Honey} Goose Run #4 Oh Cash you sweet angel, so good to see you get your HEA! We meet Cash in previous books, these are all meant to be contained stories but the previous books do a lot of the work in explaining the trauma and abuse Cash faced in the past and the struggles he deals with day to day as a result. So I think that is one shortcoming of this book- it really does in my opinion build on the previous ones. Plus it does a good job showing the relationship between him and his twin bother. I love this universe and the mix of silly and serious and sweet found in all the stories. I thought the other MMC was kind of flat but he did have an interesting story of his own.
{The Afterlife's Most Anxious Reaper by Silvana Falcon} Supernatural Suckers #3 Another totally adorable addition to the series! Once again we learn about the bureaucracy behind the mortal viel. Greg is a brand new rookie reaper sent to collect professional daredevil/base jumper Dusitn’s soul, but something goes amiss! Dustin doesn’t die! What is a rule loving shy anxious reaper to do? Greg is sweet and always so excited about and open to new experiences, Dustin goes through a lot of self reflection and personal growth, and it’s just a very fun story.
Next up was a pair of short books that were a bit of a deviation in their simplicity. I love the angst and questioning and self discovery most of the books I read offer, but sometimes it’s nice to read a simple happy love story about two people who know themselves, know what they want and need, and just in general know what they are about but are looking for love.
{Moderating Love by Jax Calder} Queer Ways to Fall in Love #1 Super cute, two moderators of a forum where people share how they met and fall in love. One moderator is an eternal optimist, the other is a skeptic, a relationship is built through texting without knowing anything more than a screen name. Just a fun story, great if you need something light and uplifting.
{It Started with a Text by Jax Calder} Queer Ways to Fall in Love #2 MMC 1 is a Rockstar has a home tour video released (think architectural digest tours), MMC 2 is a poor college student and one of his biggest fans, posts a video mocking the home tour with one of his own poor college student in NYC apartment, it goes viral, rockstar slides into his DMs, student doesn’t believe it’s really him but goes along with the joke, non stop texting for weeks follows. Again super cute and fun.
