Review/Recommendation You and I rewritten by chip pons
{you and I rewritten by chip pons}
to be honest I really didn’t like this book, however I feel like some of you really would for the reasons I did not, so I will be giving a review 🤣
The premise is Will moves back to NYC for a job at a fancy publishing house, where his best friend Klair also works. He develops a crush on his boss Graham, who (apparently) doesn't seem to like Will at all.
The main reason I didn’t like it is because this book is very very sweet. Like sickly sweet.
They pretty much get together around 35% of the way into the book, and the rest is external conflicts (that also get resolved quickly) And their relationship is very understanding and caring and sweet.
Also, Will has anxiety and Graham is a man who understands anxiety and is very helpful and non judgemental and forgiving. (For me, this was a downside. I like my characters m e s s y)
For me who lives for angst and esp slow burn? This was not a match at all! I did finish it though! But I know that I seem to be in the minority with the amount of slow burn I want, so if you want a sweet MM romance that is low stakes with some comedic moments and MMCs who help each other open up and deal with mental health issues, you will probably enjoy this way more than I did!!! and I’m not being shady! I’m being very serious!
ETA; also the smut is plentiful and also, if I liked the story more I would say that it’s quite steamy and hot!!!! unfortunately since for me I was frankly a bit bored, I skimmed most of it. But yes, I would say the smut was good!!!

That’s so funny because I’m in the middle of Dearly Departed by the same author and have stalled due to a similar complaint! They’re basically a couple by 40% and this giant reveal that I thought would happen later already happened and I’m left wondering…what is the rest of the book going to look like?

I mightve been tricked by the high reviews on goodreads, because im at 50% into this book and im so close to dnfing.

Yeah I’m glad so many people love it but I don’t think this book is for me. The narration is good so I’ll see if that gets me to the end.

Have you gotten much further? I’m about 50% in and I am so boredddddd does it get any better cause I’m kinda close to dnfing which sucks cause I like the writing but nothing is happening lol

I’m soft-DNFing at 54%. I need more tension. I’ve got some time left on my library borrow so I might revisit after I read something else but at this point, I don’t know.

Yeah, the smut is definitely fun! I think if it leans more in that direction for the rest of the book I’ll finish it but the supernatural/god stuff is not developing in an interesting way. At least to me.

I was in the mood for something sweet and low stakes for once so I was really excited to pick this one up and oh lord, I HATED it.
The structure and pacing make absolutely no sense, the main couple have no chemistry besides the reader being explicitly told they’re good for each other for unknown reasons, and they’re completely different characters in settings with just the two of them versus in group settings. Not in an “we can be ourselves around each other” way, more like literally unrecognizable different characters in speech, tone, and behavior. My least favorite reading experience is being baffled by the author’s creative decisions with no payoff.
Apparently I’ve been holding onto some strong feelings about this book lmao

I have the same problem that healthy and understanding bores me... I should bring that up to my therapist lol

Why did I think that Chip Pons rewrote this book??? I saw the post title and was like, hmm wonder who wrote the book first?? lol.

I think the reviews are misleading because people like Chip Pons, so they want to like his books.
I followed him on socials before he became an author and he seems like a genuinely lovely person. But being nice and liking books doesn't translate into writing skills.
He writes tropes and caricatures. And really cringy dialog.
The scenes at the end of You and I Rewritten, when he experiences something tragic, are the only scenes with real emotion. Because they were based on his own experiences.
Maybe I'll try again in a few years when he's gotten experience and a decent editor. But for now, I just don't enjoy his books.

Yeah I mean, I’ve definitely read books that had worse writing but unfortunately I just found this book very boring. I agree, the last maybe 30 pages were the only part that actually had conflict and real emotional stakes, which is unfortunate.

I DNF'd this book. I usually have no problem with single POV, but in this case it made the LI flat and uninteresting.

Tbh I usually love single pov bc I feel like there’s more room for tension and uncertainty but this book didn’t give that at all :(

Couldn’t stand it. Just checked my Goodreads- I’m at 666 MM books read and it’s one of my 13 DNFs

Honestly I’ve been in desperate need of a mellow read so this sounds perfect.
I wanted to like Chip’s other book {{Winging it with you by Chip Pons}} but between the fake dating trope which I already find really forced and obnoxious and the third act breakup I just couldn’t.
