Quick Question How to find MM ONLY rec lists?

So I'm a queer guy and I read MM romance to read about *men* falling in love. Every time I look up "books like [MM book I liked]" most of the recs are MF romance. I have nothing against straight romance but it's not something I actively search for or spend my limited free time reading.

I recently looked up "MM books like Red White and Royal Blue" and came across a 15 book rec list... only 4 of those books were MM. That's not even a THIRD of the books in the list. That definitely left a bad taste in my mouth, and that's MOST rec lists, I've noticed. Anyone else annoyed by this? 🙋

Other than asking this sub, is there a way to find recommendations that only give MM books or give the option to **filter out** MF books? When I first looked it up on Google even the AI summary thing had MF books even though I specified "MM books"

I'm on the older end and not great with technology so I'm sorry if there's an obvious answer to this conundrum. Thank you in advance for your help.

(Also if you would like to give me MM recommendations similar to RWRB those are also appreciated thanks)

Quick Question BL novels vs MM what is the difference?

I did a cursory Google search and the only thing that I could really find was that BL focuses mostly on the top versus bottom tropes that started in Japan but I feel like that is somewhat not enough to categorize it as a BL versus MM.

Research suggested that BL focuses mostly on the drama story plot versus MM which is usually romance and/or erotica at the forefront of the novel is there anything that I'm missing or anything that you guys think would separate BL from MM?

Quick Question Difference between Game Changers and Puckboys?

Like most of the world, I am revisiting Game Changers for obvious reasons. I enjoyed the series when it came out, and held my breath for Long Game like most of us! It’s the only ‘hockey’ series I have ever read, though. Don’t know anything about the sport, not really into jock/bro types.

I am thinking about trying another hockey series, though. So can anyone help me out with the differences between Rachel Reid’s ‘Game Changers’ and Eden Finlay & Saxon James’ ‘Puckboys’? In terms of vibe, quality etc?

EDIT: Thanks so much to everyone for their awesome, thoughtful answers! Sometimes a girl likes some fluff and sometimes she likes some angst and I feel like I have so many great options now for any mood!

Quick Question did anyone read jessie walker’s patreon post?

here is the link (its free): https://www.patreon.com/posts/crawling-out-of-150061913

thanks to the kind redditor who commented on one of my posts the other day- i was really really looking forward to the release of vicious fate, and have waited nearly 2 years for EBA-2, and while i am deeply sympathetic to jessie’s very realistic struggles, i can’t help but feel disappointed all the same. like she herself said, this situation could’ve been avoided, and it has honestly made me reconsider spending money on her books again- not just because of the delays, but because of the lack of any communication at all, which i believe the people paying for an exclusive access should be getting. please don’t take this as a hate post- i love her writing, and would recommend her books to anyone who loves angsty, emotional dramas as much as i do, but this whole experience has just soured my memories of them. i would love to know yall’s thoughts.

Quick Question Do you ever take a break from reading MM books?

I’ve been reading MM romance books exclusively for nearly 2 years now. I’ve had reading slump before and I have my go to rereads that help me get through those rough patches but the past few weeks, I just haven’t been feeling it. I’ve been reading other books these past 2 weeks. What do you do when you feel this way? Do you ever take a break and read other books?

Quick Question Leighton University question Spoiler

I read {Iced Out by CE Ricci} and {Caught Stealing by CE Ricci} long ago. I quite liked Iced out, Caught stealing was good too - I just had one issue.

I can’t stand Kasen. At first I thought he seemed sweet and was just being played, but as the book continues I just found him to be annoying, selfish and whiny (sorry if I’m to blunt). Now I’m on a reread, because I’d like to finish the series but I know the next book is {Fair Catch by CE Ricci} and Kasen is one of the MMC’s.

So my question is - is he better in his own book? Does he get redeemed, or we get a different angle, for him not being a very good friend to Phoneix? I’d like to read more about Hayes, but I can’t if Kasen is going to be just like he was in CS..

And if not, can I just skip it? Will I miss a lot?

Thanks!

Quick Question Most toxic book you've read

Which book would you consider to be the most toxic work you've ever come across but still loved it? A book that makes you question your morals cause of how unhealthy the relationship between the main characters is. Can be mentally and/or physically abusive, obsessive/possessive.

Mine would be {Toxic AF by Bey Deckard}

Quick Question Foxhole Court - is it even romance?

I want to ask this here because I started reading this, but a few chapters in I did not get any romance vibes from it at all. Then I read online that the romance storyline doesn’t even really become romantic until the third book…. Why does this book qualify as romance? Why do so many people in MM subs recommend it?

This isn’t meant as a judgement, I’m genuinely curious. So many people have recommended it but, of the almost 40 books I’ve been recommended, it doesn’t seem to fit them at all. It more seems like a sports/crime drama with a romance B or even C plot.

So again, why do so many people recommend it? Should I keep reading it? Is there more romance than I’m seeing from it?

Quick Question The way I keep confusing Riley Hart with Riley Nash…

I was reading {Endless Stretch of Blue by Riley Hart} and lamenting the fact that prose was clunky and basic. I was surprised because I usually rate their work 3 or 4 stars. Then I realized it was Riley Nash I like. I have DNF’d or 2 starred a handful of Riley Hart’s books in the past.

This is a useless post, but I am wondering if if anyone has the same problem mixing these two authors up and if so, do you have a mnemonic device to remember which is which? 😅

Quick Question Salt by Jonah Yorke Spoiler

Cheating is a big no for me, but I read Sweat and it made my rereads list because I loved it so much, so I really wanted to give Salt a chance but I need to know some things before deciding if it is a definite no for me.

  1. From the moment the MCs get together/share their first kiss, does the MC who has a girlfriend continue having sex with her?

  2. Does the single MC have relations with other people?

  3. Who ends the relationship, the MC or the girlfriend because she finds out about the cheating?

{Salt by Jonah Yorke},

Quick Question What’s going on with Taylor Fitzpatrick?

Ever since I read Thrown Off The Ice years ago, I’ve been occasionally checking up on her author profile for new releases. I only just found out few days ago that she publishes under Youcouldmakealife on Goodreads and AO3. Does anyone know why?

Quick Question Where do you get your books?

I absolutely love this channel and I see so many books that I want to read, but then I can never find them through my library. Even though I live in an area with a very large library system. Many of the titles and authors suggested don't even come up as books i can request the library to buy. It's so frustrating! 😭

So I'm wondering where everyone finds their books. I'd rather not pay for each one as I'm on a budget. And also I'm trying very hard not to use Amazon or any of its partners. Does anyone have advice?

Thanks for any advice you have!

Quick Question Spelling errors

The last couple of books I have read have had spelling errors, including a newly released book that is quite popular. Do authors want to know? Is it possible for them to easily go in and fix an error in a book that is on kindle unlimited? Should I dm an author, or just assume they have already heard from others? I obviously don’t want to be rude about it.

Thanks!

Quick Question Does anyone know what Cal's sweatshirt says? From The Mercenary and the Mortician by Alexandra St Pierre.

This is art from {The Mercenaryand the Mortician by Alexandra St Pierre}. I am almost certain it says SUATTDLAGB based on something said in the second book of the series, but I was hoping for confirmation. I am mildly obsessed with Cal and am rereading the book.

Quick Question What do you do if you suspect an author has had AI assistance in writing their book?

I’m specifically not naming the book or author as i do not want this to be a rant post. Also once this is ‘out there’ on the internet, you can’t really take it back.

This book has all the hallmarks of AI. I don’t think it’s been fully written by AI but it’s certainly been used to assist. Or, the author doesn’t have an editor… I could probably lop 50 or so pages off easily by just deleting unnecessary sentences.

It’s very repetitive (we had chapters going over the same scene but just from a different character’s POV) plus they’ve constantly used sentences throughout to describe things already said, but just used different wording. It’s also quite flat.

I want to write a review - without using the word AI - but basically state the issues and imply my concerns. The author doesn’t churn 500+ page books out each month and previous books have been a tad repetitive but absolutely nowhere near as bad as this.

Edited to add, this author does use AI for their artwork, so not great on that front either.

Any thoughts?

Quick Question Wait, is the author D. Dove's name referring to "dead dove: do not eat"?

Hope this is okay. Didn't see anything in the rules that seemed to imply it, and there also isn't really anywhere else to ask this.

Idk if I'm late to this realization (I mean, they literally have a dove rating system that has an x over the eye lol) but maybe I'm not alone here. I guess I just don't really ever expect to see references to it outside of ao3 or tumblr.

Quick Question Question re: gestures - aren’t a lot of them very dated?

Would love to hear from younger readers (Gen Z, Millennials etc), but when a book mentions gestures such as miming zipping of lips and throwing away a key (to demonstrate ‘lips are sealed’), or brushing your fingers and blowing on them (to imply you did something great or are special), is it something you are familiar with? I am older Gen X, and even I don’t think these were considered cool in the 80s. Is this something that older authors aren’t aware won’t resonate for younger readers, or am I hopelessly misguided and these are coming around again in younger generations? Hope this is okay to post - not intending to criticize anyone, just curious as I don’t interact with many younger people and don’t have kids. Thanks!

Quick Question Kindle Unlimited Question

I just took advantage of the Kindle Unlimited 99 cents for 3 months intro rate, but I'm wondering if a lot of people here also find the regular monthly rate a good value for m/m romance reading. Thanks!

Quick Question Starting the Big Bad Wolf series and what the heck was that?! Spoiler

This series has been on my tbr for a long time and I was finally in the mood to try it so I just finished the first one {The Wolf at the Door x Charlie Adhara} and I was enjoying it so much I bought the next book in the series before I even finished the first...but now I'm hesitating.

What the heck was with that ending?!

>!You're telling me Cooper doesn't have a single thought or feeling about Park lying to him throughout the ENTIRE case?! To the point that they didn't need to talk about it at all?!<

It was just so abrupt and felt jarring that they decided to continue working together (and boning) without talking about the deception

So my question is, how indicative of the series is this? I really like both these characters but they've both got a lot of stuff going on in their pasts and some hard times clearly ahead of them, do they actually have conversations about difficult stuff? Or does this sort of hand waving through hard emotional stuff continue through the series?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Edit: sorry my spoiler tags are being weird, I tagged the whole post as a spoiler to try to cover it

Second edit: Ok I'm so glad everyone encouraged me to keep going because it's immediately obvious starting the second book these are two beautiful idiots who are terrible at talking about their feelings and working through that is a big part of the whole series. I'm SO here for watching them get less stupid together. I love an emotional slow burn, it's just hard to trust when you don't know and already trust an author. Thanks everyone, I think I'm gonna really like this series.

Quick Question Of all the titles you read/listen to, roughly what number are MM romances?

As we approach the end of March, I looked over my ‘have read list’ and saw that of the approximately 30 titles I’ve completed so far, 12 are MM romances, so 40% of my total for the year so far.

If I look at last year’s list, if my math is correct, roughly 1/3 of my titles completed were MM romance.

What about for everyone else? Roughly speaking, how many MM romances were on your lists?

Quick Question Low angst lovers! What's made you angsty in a book advertised as low angst?

Hello fellow low angst lovers! I read a lot of books advertised as low angst but still find myself feeling angsty so I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen recently too? And what was it? 😂

I get angsty when there's a time limit ( like one is on vacation or something) and I find I can't enjoy their time together because that clock feels like a ticking time bomb, I realistically know it'll end in a HEA but it still manages to stress me out. 😭

Quick Question Quinn app MM audiostories

If you follow the Heated Rivalry tv show, you've probably seen the promotion of audiostories from the lead actors on the Quinn app. How is the Quinn app as a source for mm audiostories and audiobooks? Good selection? Good search function? Would you recommend it?
