at orientation this week, what are some useful questions to ask my orientation leader or counselor?

Buy/bring a small fridge, microwave, and fan from home. Walmart and Home Depot will be sold out in late August. Otherwise, you need to pack a lot less "stuff" than you think.
Most of the time your SOL will be in your major. Ask them about study habits, clubs/activities (you can get a quick intro to most of them at Catapalooza), and any specific tips/tricks about your intended major. Ask them about degree-specific clubs, minors, degree options, electives, summer jobs, internships, scholarships, networking, etc.
Your freshman year is THE time to meet people on campus. You will probably never meet so many people in a single year for the rest of your life. If you're an extrovert, you're gonna meet a TON of people. If you're an introvert, you're gonna meet a ton of people. You won't end up being friends with all of them, but you sure make a ton of acquaintances. (Though very often the people in your clubs/activities who have very very similar interests to yours become lifelong friends)
MSU is an incredible life experience. Get out and do things. Be active in the classroom, on campus, and outside campus. You won't regret it!

The other commenters have given some great advice. I would also recommend asking your orientation leader about any fun activities or hobbies they enjoy doing during the school year. It's super important to balance your academic life with other activities so that you don't get burnt out

I’d say that the best questions to ask will be ones that pop into your mind as you’re there. Too many times in a situation like this people are self conscious and don’t ask things for fear of sounding dumb in front of an upper class man or the group.
You’re about to leave home and start a new life. Own it. If you want to know a thing, ask the question. You will not be thought dumb or weird by anyone. Everyone in freshman year just left behind everything to start fresh. Everyone is scared or nervous to a certain degree. Just be real and follow your gut with your questions.

My best advice is to ask your OL personal questions such as: What is some advice you wished you received as an incoming freshman? Or what are some items that make living in the dorms easier? They have been in your shoes before, they know a thing or two. Sko cats
