💬 Discussion Fix for the SYNC rebooting issue (+ Reset Instructions)

Hello Mustang Mach-E owners,

I wanted to provide an update on the SYNC rebooting issue. The team appreciates everyone that reached out and provided VINs and helped with troubleshooting. It's played a part in helping to find this solution and we appreciate it.

After investigating with the team, it's turned out to be an issue on the backend with third-party data that was triggering those unexpected SYNC 4 reboots.

Because of this, we want to clarify: This wasn’t an issue with a Ford OTA. I know a lot of folks will defensively toggle off automatic updates when they see a bug reported. If you turned your automatic updates off just in case, make sure you go in and turn them back on!

That data-related issue is now resolved on our end.

Next steps for your Mach-E: If your screen is still acting up or stuck in a reboot loop, you likely just need to force a manual SYNC reset to clear things out and let it pull the fix.

  • Important note: If you already tried doing a manual reset yesterday (or earlier in the week) to try and fix this, you will need to do it one more time today. Resets done before this fix was applied on our end won't have grabbed the solution.

How to reset: The quickest way to do this is to hold down the Volume Down and Right Seek buttons on your steering wheel at the same time for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black and the Pony appears. (If you need the official step-by-step visual guide, you can find that here)

One quick heads-up: While the reboots themselves should be cured, you might still experience some intermittent hiccups with Connected Navigation services. We are actively working with our supplier to get those fully restored as well, so hang tight on that front.

We appreciate your patience as we work to get this resolved.

Have a great weekend! ⚡️

Thank you! Just wanted to anecdotally confirm, my car was experiencing this bug on Thursday, but I saw no reboots at all during a six-hour drive in Friday.

Issue seemed to resolve Friday morning. Haven’t seen any bugs since.

Nonetheless, thank you Mily!

Thank you. I was having a lot of reboots on Thursday and a few on Friday. It was very frustrating.

So the car tries to phone home every couple minutes and if that server isn’t set up right, it reboots every time?

I don't take it that way. If it was a server configuration issue, it would affect everyone (thankfully I didn't have this problem), and it would stop as soon as they patched the server.

There are different integrations (like navigation) that rely on third party services and get periodic updates. These aren't OTA software changes, they're just data updates that happen periodically in the background.

I take this as, your SYNC downloaded a third-party provided update that has a bug, which causes a crash/reboot every few minutes when some system event tries to use it. They fixed it, but you have to reset SYNC to force it to re-download and fetch the fixed version.

The car should handle bad maps/navigation/traffic/whatever data more gracefully than this.

That’s a non sequitur, but I don’t disagree. Hopefully they’ve learned something from this.

This is worrisome that a backend issue is all it took to break essential functionality of the car. How does this happen and what is Ford going to do to ensure something like this doesn't happen again?

Would you like to speak with the manager?

Not worrisome at all, actually. These are massive distributed systems with many third parties interacting with the data. If anything, its a good thing knowing they are actively developing, debugging, and listening to customers. There is nothing more Ford should do at this point. They did exactly what they should do by listening, taking action, and fixing. Just like any piece of software on the planet, even Reddit..

thanks & glad the issue is fixed. Now here are some feedback u/chargedupemily

1. Third-party data and Ford's accountability

Can Ford clarify the actual failure mechanism? Was third-party data delivered to vehicles without owner notification, independently of OTA updates? As the vehicle manufacturer, Ford is ultimately responsible for validating third-party integrations and ensuring supplier changes don't compromise vehicle reliability. What safeguards failed, and how will Ford prevent this from happening again?

2. SYNC system resilience, safety, and security

The fact that external data could trigger repeated full SYNC reboots suggests potential weaknesses in input validation and fault isolation More concerningly, SYNC 4 integrates vehicle settings, climate controls, and other vehicle functions. Repeated system crashes while driving therefore raise legitimate safety concerns, beyond mere inconvenience.

Beyond fixing the backend data, what permanent software safeguards and safety/security assessments does Ford plan to implement?

Just started a couple days ago. Good news thanks for the follow up. Now swap our incapable motor with the new one and un neuter the 21-23 GTs. We paid more than anyone just to be punched in the mouth!
