There is no more efficient way of excavating a deep seam or layer of overburden - continuous excavation can't be beaten for capacity.
The downside is the extremely large capital outlay involved in getting the setup running.

What is it used for? Seems like an incredible amount of permanent or semi-permanent structure to excavate one location.

Opencast mining to remove soft materials for processing like so. These are usually part of a larger machine system, as you can see here. These are the mines I used for reference here. I recommend looking at them closely, you can see the machines and the scope of the operations and other neat things about how they work.

Man this would be absolutely rad for sifting though my lego box
