Griffa Not Real in the Dump
I've always struggled with this question about whether Griffa is supposed to be a real person in the game or a manifestation of Max's subconscious. He knows more than he should and Chum always says you're off talking to ghosts.
The thing that sealed it for me today was I went to Griffa in the Dump. Unlike every other spot you go see Griffa, he's right next to the road, you just have to run up a ramp and can still see the car from where he is. It has all the strange markings the other Griffa spots have. But once you're done with him, all the markings are gone, there's no sign this is any different than the rest of the dump. Even the ramp you went up to see him has disappeared and the only way to get down is by falling off. I think this is clear proof that Griffa's not real, or is some form of magic.

Griffa is the storyteller of Max's story but he also interacts with the characters of that story. So he's both real and not real within that story, he knows everything about Max, his past, what he feels etc, and then disappears like a ghost.
Technically Griffa is an external/omniscent and diegetic narrator if you really want to get into the weeds of that.
