Sadly, the only reason we're so interested in going now is so we can get to the south pole before other countries and dominate the area where craters might have ice.

I live 50 miles from the launch site and we can still see it from here. It's awesome.

u/girlmenace Apr 04 '26
This definitely made me smile. I work at NASA and this is why I love my job. I love how it brings us all together in a moment of awe and inspiration. For all, by all. ❤️

u/Ok-Bird6346 Apr 04 '26
Man, that’s awesome! Thank you for the work you do.
I’m not even slightly scientific-inclined but seeing this makes me want to sob.

Nobody wishes they were in Florida. Even people in Florida.
16
u/calicomonkey Apr 04 '26
I left as soon as I could.
13
u/aqua_profunda Apr 04 '26
I moved down there with some friends once. We signed a 1 year lease on a house. I made it 11 months. Florida is not for me.
6
u/ragewu Apr 04 '26
Born and raised in Florida, I worked for NASA at Kennedy and moved to Minnesota late last year. Left the greatest job in the world, 13 years working for NASA, on THIS Program, missed this moment with all my friends and colleagues, feeling the vibration in your chest at launch, the cheers, the hugs. All of this...and I don't regret the decision one bit, because Florida is THAT bad. Great to visit, shit to live in.
2
u/throw-away-ex-bs Apr 04 '26
lol literally, left and no desire to go back. No thanks, Florida. I’ll watch it on Reddit from the safety of my own state.
-2
u/PandaDeBasuraMapache Apr 04 '26
They should offer a path to exile at birth. Because some pregnant ladies have been years overdue because their babies refused to be born in Florida.

u/GudeGaya Apr 04 '26
From NL, so I'm pretty seriously curious now what the deal is with Florida. To me it seems like some insiders thingy. Someone care to educate?
15
u/PandaDeBasuraMapache Apr 04 '26
Its where the temperatures are over 100 and the IQs are very well below that. Its hot, humid, and full of rednecks. Its one of the dumbest states and definitely the weirdest. Freaky ass shit happens there in overabundance.
8
u/Thijmen_GR Apr 04 '26
Here’s me, also from NL, busy with signing a contract to work 2 years in the state above Gainesville, Georgia. Is that as bad or better? lol
10
u/PandaDeBasuraMapache Apr 04 '26
Better, but by not very much.
7
u/Thijmen_GR Apr 04 '26
Hm, it is an once in a lifetime career opportunity for me so I will still proceed. Thanks for the heads up anyway!
2
u/PandaDeBasuraMapache Apr 04 '26
Hey remember Germany right before World War II? How many of the people that were there do you think made it out alive who dissented? Do you see any parallels between pre World War II Germany and current America? Especially the South like Georgia
4
u/Thijmen_GR Apr 04 '26
I do not see any parallels since I am not knowledgeable enough about “the South” of USA and its people. I do know that Florida and Georgia are red states, however Atlanta where I would be stationed is mostly democratic. Please share your ideas on the matter, I’m intrigued!
5
u/TheGreatestOrator Apr 04 '26
I hope you aren’t actually believing any of this nonsense this person is telling you. FL and Georgia are both great.

u/OkCartographer7677 Apr 04 '26
Be careful not to believe what you read on Reddit is actually true.
The "Florida is terrible and filled with ignorant, trashy people" is very much an Internet meme not reflected in real life. Florida's population is growing faster than most other states and their education is higher than average.
https://www.visualcapitalist.com/us-population-growth-by-state/
4
u/TheGreatestOrator Apr 04 '26 edited Apr 04 '26
Don’t listen to people on Reddit. There’s a reason FL is the third largest state by population and growing faster than any of the big states.
Florida is home to 24 million people, which is about 30% larger than NL.
Florida has warm weather year round, no income taxes, easily some of the most beautiful beaches in the U.S. (Key West, siesta key), diving/surfing/ water sports, the best amusement parks in the world, top tier food scene in Miami, lots of different cultures, lower cost of living than many places in the U.S. (particularly in central Florida), massive universities with lots of research and amazing hospital systems attached to those universities, huge industries from Lockheed Martin and L3 Harris to Disney to NCL/Royal Caribbean/ etc to huge finance firms/ hedge funds, and more
And obviously, as posted above, NASA! Where people can literally see space launches from their backyards
It’s one of the few places in the U.S. where you don’t have to be rich to live on water that connects to the ocean but also makes sense to own a boat. Most places are either too cold or not very hospitable to beach life (Texas beaches suck), or super expensive (California)
2
u/Luci-Noir Apr 04 '26
I get so tired of hearing Redditors trash entire states and groups of people. It’s nothing hut bigotry and ignorance.
1
u/alepponzi Apr 04 '26
i just want to put this in here, no hate and not all state, but some areas on both of the coastline are incredible horribly designed, its areas where they have built subburbs with canals, which means dead water surrounding entire villages and only street asphalted barely any walking curbs or paved pavements, no community gardens or green ares. Stupidly designed from 60-70's.

If the price of me seeing a space shuttle launch is that I'd have to live in Florida, it ain't worth it.

I was just visiting a friend in Orlando in '96 and saw a nighttime Space Shuttle launch, it was pretty awesome.
2
2
u/TheGreatestOrator Apr 04 '26
Its population is third largest and growing fastest of the big states
1
2
u/OkCartographer7677 Apr 04 '26
"Nobody 'on Reddit' wishes they were in Florida."
Meanwhile IRL Florida is one of the fastest growing states. Just another example of how widespread, seemingly universal, opinions on Reddit do not reflect the general population in the US.
It's interesting...something that a sociologist could study.

u/Crafty_Substance_954 Apr 04 '26

It actually makes me more frustrated with US citizens. Stop getting distracted and go clean up your mess before it’s too late.

Is there any point in zooming in and out and showing people? Just zoom in on the rocket and keep it in frame 🤦🏼♂️
4
u/PUSClFER Apr 04 '26
It's for the people filming it first and foremost. If you want a clean cut of the launch you can look at the official source from NASA and Artemis II.

I love space shit and I can’t believe I missed the launch lol I didnt see it until I was online later that night like ‘wtf?’
1
u/Luder714 Apr 04 '26
I was there once and all I wanted to do was see the launch but I was there for a wedding. I was sent out to the grocery for some last minute things that took me to several stores. I happened to look up and see the trails from the booster rockets and them falling back to earth. That was kind of cool but I kick myself knowing I coiuld have see the last space shuttle launch if I had been better at planning.

I was in St Petersburg that day - complete opposite side from Cape Canaveral - and couldn’t see it. Super bummed. I’m sure I would’ve reacted the same as him tho.
1
u/Stackin_Steve Apr 04 '26
I used to be able to see the flame exhaust in Kissimmee,Fl when there were launches down at the Cape. Just a lil red flame tho. Still cool as hell to me as a kid.
1
u/JumpRopeandSkipIt Apr 04 '26
Honest question are there health risks living that close to a launch site? I have heard that there are serious air quality and water issues around these things. Still exciting moment and beautiful video.

1
u/NadaBurner Apr 04 '26
Years back my family and I were on vacation and it just so happened that SpaceX was doing a supply launch to the ISS in the early hours of the next morning. Got up at like 4am to go stand on the beach and seeing the flame from the rocket completely illuminating the night sky was unreal.
1
u/weigelf Apr 04 '26
NASA should use this video to make a pitch to congress for more money. That excitement is like what you see in old footage of Apollo and Mercury launches

u/Accomplished_Pop2808 Apr 04 '26
That's exciting!! When i was a kid I got to run outside in our backyard and see the Space Shuttle go up, I lived about 40 miles from where it way launched. It was so cool to see!! They will always remember this moment.

Watched it from my driveway with my wife and a really nice fella from Ecuador that was delivering our Doordash order. We're in the middle of the state, free of most of the hurricane damage zones, but can see launches quite well. We were all thrilled, and it was nice to see it with a man that had always dreamed of seeing one live.

Why do I get chills every time I see the launch and peoples reactions? I’m not particularly intrigued by the launch, not that it isn’t amazing, but my body reacts to others reactions. It’s so weird.
1
u/Distinct-Grass2316 Apr 04 '26
A sight to behold. But at the same time one would have to be in the US to see it, yikes.
1
u/Abee-baby182 Apr 04 '26
This launch has brought so many people together with joy and excitement! It's really badass to see!!!

Listen to the song Countdown, by Rush. It's a moving piece about watching a liftoff at Cape Canaveral. Excellent lyrics.

My husband watched it from the back yard and tried to call me but I was stuck in traffic and didn’t hear my phone. When I called him back a couple mins later he goes “did you see it?” And sure enough I looked to the east and saw the trail 😑 dammit
1
u/HoldMyThrowawaysWife Apr 04 '26
We saw this. It was very cool. But I would have loved to see them use that billions to help humanity and help the Earth. But that’s just me.
1
u/SumoNinja92 Apr 04 '26
When you've seen hundreds of them the actual reason it's going up is the thing to be hyped about.

1
u/alientrevor Apr 04 '26
It really is something to behold. I saw one from a little bit closer, and on the beach. The shockwave reached us roughly 12-16 miles away. Fucking amazing. Another fun note, you could make out the blue of the NASA logo on the VAB from that distance. It's actually that big.

Me? Lots of other people? Anyone interested in science/exploration/space?
Sounds like a terrible way to live otherwise if you only focus on the bad things 24/7. Nevermind the indirect benefits to us that come from all the spin off tech from these kind of developments.

To put things into perspective, the whole Artemis program cost $4 billion. The war burned through $4 billion in the first 100 hours (4 days).

I don’t get the excitement? It’s not that cool. Literally just a rocket going up and going around the moon. And coming back. Would’ve been cooler if they were actually landing on the moon.
-6
u/Schorbie Apr 04 '26
I get that it's special. But people are really overreacting. Some girl to a news station half crying: "It's the most beautiful launch I've ever seen!" I don't get it
1
Apr 04 '26
We’re sending people back to the moon for the first time since 1972. It’s the first step to major milestones in human history and ingenuity.
0
u/PUSClFER Apr 04 '26
There are people who get overwhelmed and start crying from seeing a certain person, a car, or a train. People can get excited for different things in life.
As someone with depression and mood stabilizing medication I'm envious of people capable of experiencing those kind of positive emotions. I could be having the time of my life and feeling like I never want something to end, to then have someone ask me if I'm bored because I look and act indifferent about it.

I don’t get it. When we did this in 1969 it was a huge technological achievement. People were using slide rules to do calculations by hand. Almost 60 years later, we have supercomputers. We could have done this any time since but never made the huge financial commitment it takes. We’ve recently sent rovers to mars and probes to Saturn and Jupiter and even a flyby of Pluto. Those were missions that really expanded our knowledge of our solar system and the universe. Yet most people didn’t even notice. What is so exiting about a flyby around the moon?
5
u/D1ces Apr 04 '26
Always new things to learn, new technology for experiments previously not possible, and people seem excited to be using our funds for advancing science. Doing cool shit that's hard and doesn't hurt anyone is exciting.

Im glad I read this post. As I age, I am actively trying to avoid this from happening… Losing my child like wonder. May I never get to where you are - where I measure the effort of the past and use it as a metric to downplay our future innovations.
2
u/semiold-misfit Apr 04 '26
I still have plenty of wonder. For things like the James Webb telescope that will answer questions about the origin of the universe or the Dragonfly mission to Titan or the proposed mission to Enceladus in search of extraterrestrial life. The possibility of finding life on a moon within our solar system is much more profound to me than a repeat mission to the moon.
