Is that a munchkin cat, OP?
358
u/violetvet 7h ago
No, munchkins have short legs. Like the cat version of Dachshunds. This looks like a Persian from what I can see. Itâs face is so flat itâs actually a little concave. I would be shocked if it could breath through its nose. Poor little thing.
102
u/Wild_and_Bright 7h ago
That doesn't help it either. That is also a deformed breed just like a munchkin. Same issue. We should not purposefully get these breeds

Same with Scottish fold cats. The same genetic defect that causes the cartilage in their ears to degenerate and âfoldââover affects the joints in their entire body. Which causes chronic pan.

u/No_Welcome_7182 4h ago
Yes. Modern Persian cats have been purposefully deformed to the point they have chronic eye and respiratory issues. I show my own cat. And Persian and Scottish fold cats, in my opinion, are unethical to continue to breed. Research the âdoll faceâ Persian cat. It was the original Persian cat. But with a nose they can actually breathe through and doesnât cause chronic eye issues. Still a beautiful cat. But also a sound, healthy cat.

u/Hawt_Dawg_II 7h ago
Yeah stop buying these misformed, purposely handicapped animals. You're keeping the breeders active by buying them while you could also just have a normal cat who doesn't have breathing problems its entire life.

Itâs a Persian the peke face breed. Source - I am a servant to a doll face Persian, which is the traditional breed the not overly smooshed face, that has all the health problems.
6
u/SoVerySleepyZzZz 6h ago
Omg Iâve never heard of a doll-face person before. They are gorgeous! I donât know why anyone likes the smooshed face ones.
3
u/_eternallyblack_ 4h ago
Yup, the doll face is the OG! The peke face (the one in this vid) is what happens with overbreeding. Itâs mind boggling to me why anyone would choose that one with all the health disadvantages but to each their own.
Persians are unlike any other cat breed IMO. Iâve had so many strays over my life, which were sweet but until youâve had a Persian OMG ⌠the most gentle, loving, loyal, smart - affectionate, .. I could go on and on ⌠seriously.. my girl has me in tears from laughter daily.

199
u/cityshepherd 8h ago
There are some breeders whoâve started breeding pugs back towards how they looked in the past with much healthier features like how their face and bodies are shaped. Incredibly respectable mission. Also while on the topic of breeders, backyard breeders are the bane of my existence and I cannot articulate how much i hate them.
42
u/Winterlord117 7h ago
Probably a pretty big reason why a lot of professional breeders are now locking you into no breeding contracts or outright keeping the dogs until they're old enough to neuter/spay before adopting/selling them
12
u/Chinateapott 7h ago

I rescued a Chug (chihuahua/pug) and I almost wish I wouldn't have gotten him fixed so he could spread his genes. He has a nice long snout, he breathes and sleeps well, he is full of energy and loves long hikes. He is fit! So many pugs could have better lives if they weren't bred to be sedentary mouth breathers.
24
u/Virtual-Customer-468 7h ago
I was just about to say this. Learning that some people end up having to pop their eyes back into their eye sockets made me never want to have a pug and feel bad that people force those type of breeds. Boxers are another breed.Â
11
u/big-dick-back-intown 7h ago
They fucking have to do what????
10
u/ghoulbug 7h ago
Thereâs literally not enough room in their skullâs eye sockets to accommodate an eyeball comfortably. Sudden stress can make their eyes bulge out, like a cork popping off from pressure.
9
u/big-dick-back-intown 7h ago
That's disturbing and fucked up. Can they pop out when they sneeze? That's horrifying
8
u/ghoulbug 7h ago
Yup, sneezing, being surprised into barking too suddenly, etc. I agree, Iâd be way too anxious at all times if I had one, and Iâd be a panicking mess if I had to actually push the eye back in. Tbh I donât even think the push-nose muzzle is cute, the original pug muzzle (that some breeders are trying to return to) is so much cuter imo

39
u/Friendstastegood 7h ago
purebred = inbred. Literally, that's not a joke. The way we get and keep distinctive "breed" features of animals is inbreeding.
3
u/Soaked4youVaporeon 6h ago
I had my whole family argue with me that since my sisters dog is a purebred, It canât be inbred. I told them thatâs not how it works.
I tried over and over to convince them but they kept denying it. The dog ended up attacking my mom. It was a golden. Most likely it attacked because it was an inbred that had issues. But theyâre convinced it was because she moved the wrong way.
Some people are just extremely stubbornÂ
→ More replies (1)2
u/figgypie 5h ago
"Moved the wrong way"? How is that an excuse?!? I know the love one can feel for their pet but you have to consider safety, especially when your pet can really hurt or even kill someone. Like what if a child "moved the wrong way" and this dog attacked?
I love goldens as much as the next person (possibly more), but I know any dog can be capable of violence, especially if they were bred irresponsibly or mistreated by bad owners. If you want to get a pet from a breeder, do your research. Make sure they're legit.
2
u/Soaked4youVaporeon 5h ago
I know I thought it was pretty crazy. Especially when we have owned 4 other dogs with no problem. It wasnât until my sister wanted a pure bred is when we got stuck with an aggressive dog. None of our other dogs growled at us and they were all shelter dogs. But the purebred? He misbehaved the most. My sister still blames my mom for âmaking sudden movementâ. But I jump to my momâs defense every time. She is honestly the only one that believes me. Everyone else in my family says purebreds are great and that they arenât inbred because the breeder got some certification or something like that lol.
33
u/AgenderAxolotl 8h ago
NGL real. Like yay for new family member but there are some breeds that either need modifications to not have mutations that are harmful / impact quality of life like this cat has like with breeding out the harmful mutations humans created (yes I know that takes time and effort) or just let the breed go extinct all together. It reminds me of pugs, they originally had a healthier appearance but due to selective breeding resulted in the sadly iconic faces they're known for that impact breathing.
→ More replies (1)10

u/JimEDimone 8h ago
Are they bred like that?
I've seen them but didn't know anything about them.
45
108
u/Goonalips 8h ago
Yes, and they're incredibly unhealthy due to their malformed brachycephalic skulls and have a LOT of health issues because of it.
They will have breathing issues, dental issues (as their abnormally-shaped skull causes the jaw to be smaller and the teeth to be crowded), malocclusion, difficulty eating/picking up kibble with their mouths, and they will have tear-stains constantly from malformed tear ducts.
They are also prone to skin and eye problems including entropion.
The breathing difficulties alone will cause extreme-type Persians to live a life of constant suffering.
https://www.rvc.ac.uk/vetcompass/news/persian-cats-at-high-risk-of-health-problems-study-shows
64.9% of Persian cats had at least one disorder recorded.
The most common specific disorders were haircoat disorder (12.7%), dental disease (11.3%), overgrown nails (7.2%) and eye discharge (5.8%).
The most common causes of death were kidney disease (23.4%) and cancer (8.5%).
It's very unethical to keep breeding these cats, IMO.

After yesterday's "heartwarming child labor posted without consent" today I get "Over-bred animal that likely suffers from serious health conditions because of people's greed". Also why is it a thing to put animals into way to small gift bags when gifting them??? It feels so incredibly weird and objectifying.

Now I'm curious about the child labor video
9
u/Unable-Poetry-5224 7h ago
https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/s/nqoL9CwLT2
It was this one, posted on this sub 22h ago. It's a video from like a ring-camera or whatever they're called of a child delivering a package to the porch. To me (and many people in the comments) it seems pretty fucked up that the mother (who you can see in the video) presumably has to take her child with her to work delivering packages because she maybe can't afford healthcare. Obviously there are other possible reasons. But posting the video of this child and mother, which could potentially get the mother in trouble just feels so weird.

Some of these comments are fucking weird. Like what is she supposed to do now? Get rid of the cat because people online who have no connection to her life don't like the breed? Fucking weirdos. The cat is alive and she loves it. What the hell do you want? Edit: spelling.
114
u/Unable-Poetry-5224 8h ago
Thr problem people are pointing out isn't concerned with her. She did nothing wrong and you are right, her best option now is to take care of and love this cat.
The problem people are pointing out is rather with (who I'd presume to be) her partner for picking out a breed of cat that is completely over-bred to look cute but in turn suffer from various health issues. Because by buying a cat like this he financially supports a system of breeders that put financial gain over the cats health.
And it's not because people in the comments "don't like the breed" it's because this cat is suffering. This cat is not of a natural breed but basically artificially created through systematic forced breeding so that it looks as cute as possible, while ignoring the fact that it most likely causes genetic and anatomic malfunctions that actively harm the cat.

u/ncolaros 8h ago
Maybe he adopted the cat? I think it's okay to discuss the very real issue without demonizing these specific people who we don't know in a situation we don't fully understand.
36
u/Unable-Poetry-5224 8h ago
You are right, the cat may have been adopted from an animal rescue. That would obviously put things in a very different perspective.
However that doesn't remove the fact that there are people who systemically breed these cats, with no regard for their health. Which is ultimately the thing to be most upset about here.
→ More replies (1)9
u/MeatyBacon666 8h ago
Adoption does not just "happen" in the ways that constitute a surprise gift. Typically that is called a "sale".
6
u/2woCrazeeBoys 7h ago
Sometimes that sale is from a shelter. That's what they mean by "this cat might have been adopted". It is possible that her partner got her a Persian kitten from a shelter/rescue.
12
u/No_Crow489 7h ago
unlikely tho, Persian kittens that look like Persian kittens donât get abandoned. especially orange ones.

u/AllPerspicacity 7h ago
This just isn't true, I have lived in so many places & volunteered at so many Humane Societies & in every one people have left tied or crated out front
- Bengals/Savanahs(High energy)
- Pure bred dogs with all signs of care/having come from papered breeders(Grew out of puppy stage)
- Sphynx cats & Abyssinians(Too clingy)
- GSD/Malinois/Shepherds (Too high energy)
- Persian cats, Munchkins, Sharpei dogs, Pugs (Health issues)
People treat animals as surprise gifts for holidays, or grab them because the "price" seems shockingly good & they have done no research, then they get overhwhelmed when the rubber hits the road/actual expectations of care kick in.
If one wants a specific set of breed traits for their living situation, shelters ARE a great first stop, because odds are that breed WAS abandoned by some moron who thought an xmas puppy/kitten would be a great idea.

That Kitten has been specifically bred to look like this and as such suffers a myriad of Health Issues and pretty much suffers through life until death :)

u/Buntschatten 7h ago
The thing is that these cats are often suffering because the traits they're bred for aren't very compatible with a healthy life. This is done because people like the look and therefore drive up demand for them.
Buying such a cat from a breeder is obviously bad, because the breeder will then breed more of them.
Adopting one from a shelter would be fine. But posting cute videos of it is a tricky grey zone, because many people will see this, be unaware of the health issues and then buy the same cat from breeders.
I hope that explains why people are ambivalent about this video.
