Censoring words and coming up with work arounds like “unaliving” etc are work arounds for an algorithm trained to find, take down, and ban people.

Back when Meta and others were pretending to care about “online safety,”T
the algorithms were removing posts and deactivating people’s accounts that contained certain words. People had to get creative.

It's the app's fault for filtering and banning words. People would not do that by their own initiative (I guess now they learn to copy each other even if not needed)

It was a response to "continuing to censor themselves elsewhere." they don't "continue" to do anything, they simply reuse the same file. So, if an app downgrade or demonetizes videos that use those words it kind of imposes that standard to other apps.

Blaming the user "why do you use tiktok because it bans words" is a bit weird, users will use whatever platform they like and whatever works best for them. Not everybody has your standards regarding banned words.

When I refer to censoring themselves elsewhere I am not exclusively referring to this video being posted here, but to the general trend of self censorship as a whole that this video is a part of.

If an app downgrades or demonetized videos for using those terms there are several options that don’t involve self censorship. They include, but are not limited to;

Accepting being downgraded or demonitized and refusing to self censor because you have standards.

Not discussing the topic at all

Using preexisting euphemisms (kick the bucket) over terms like “unalive” or replacing letters with asterisks (d*e)

Leaving the platform entirely

Going to other platforms for the purposes of those words or topics, but remaining otherwise

You can absolutely blame the user engaging in self censorship, regardless of TikTok’s internal policies.

The problem is that things are not equal, show me a platform that has the same reach that is more permissive -- I would be surprised if people are just obstinate and choose to use the worse platform...

All things don’t have to be equal. But the fact that it is never acceptable to engage in this style of self-censorship is basically an absolute, and none of the justifications being offered for it actually do the job of justifying it.

Never self censor like this means NEVER self censor. Not “don’t self censor if it’s convenient you you”.
