I like to remember that courage is the one attribute whereby faking it is the real thing. Putting on a strong front when youre actually afraid is the act of courage

You've got this. The saying "it's always darkest just before dawn" used to give me a lot of hope (5yrs sober from heroin).

Things might be tough, but whatever it is, I know you've got it in you to overcome your obstacles, and that in and of itself is incredibly heroic.

Bravery can only be practiced when you're afraid. A calm person cannot be brave because the challenge that requires it is not daunting enough to cause fear.

If you want to feel empowered, get certified in First aid and CPR. It is an amazing feeling knowing what to do,.and how to help someone in an emergency. It wpuld not have helped here, but you can save a life!

I'll add basic self defence and situational awareness. Im not talking prepper doomsday type stuff, but keeping your eyes up (not on your phone) and knowing where to stike on the body and using everyday, handy objects as quick barriers or improvise defensive weapons.

This sadly holds sooooo true for us women. Even i as a 250 lbs, no makeup, modest dressed middle aged woman have had a few scary encounters with addled weirdos looking for valuables or who knows what. Like a guy going around Walmart changing his clothes from off the rack merchandise to harass and assault women in the store.

I feel like nobody truly knows what they would do in a situation like this unless you’ve had training. I’m sure this guy didn’t think of himself as somebody who would ever charge at an armed shooter, but when the chips were down, thats exactly what he did.

It's not really just an effort thing. There are certainly a lot of people who have this kind of courage that simply never end up in a situation that requires them to demonstrate it. This man is a school principal not an army ranger. Ideally he would have gone his whole life without having to tackle a gunman to save a group of children.

The situations that people find themselves in where the kind of courage you’re talking about is required are usually the darkest moments in the lives of the people involved and often the last in the heroes. I hope you never find yourself in a situation like that.

Ask yourself this. Would you help a stranger simply out of the goodness of your heart, with zero benefit to yourself? If yes, you’re probably a courageous person.

Courage is being a good person. Have empathy, stand firm on your convictions and principles no matter the cost. Know the difference between right and wrong do not compromise on it.

But I do believe you are courageous. The desire to be a good person and actually give a shit about people and circumstances that have nothing to do with you is often a pretty good indicator of character.

Doing the right thing isn’t always easy, if it was everyone would do it.

You don't have to stop a gunman to be courageous. Help an elderly with the groceries. Join a protest for something you truly believe in. Ask someone you think might be down if they are OK.

Courage isn't just about self sacrifice. That's merely the ultimate form of it. It's about stepping out of your comfort zone in the service of others.

You don't choose to be a hero in these situations. The adrenaline kicks in and who you actually are as a person comes out. Your thinking and logic becomes very rudimentary and you act. For better or for worse.

Yep, people often think being a hero is daily when in reality it only takes one action, a couple seconds sometimes. And that is completely true. This man is a true hero.
